Behavioural Response of Anacanthotermes ochraceus towards Some Baits and Volatile Oils

Six types of termites＇ baits （cartoon, rough tissues, soft toilet tissues, acacia wood, saw dust of building wood and sackcloth） were elicited variable degree of attraction toward Anacanthotermes ochaceus, where the best one was cardboard, followed by soft and rough toilet tissue at mono-choice and multiple-choice tests. Chemical analysis showed that there were variations in the chemical constituents （lignin, cellulose, N, H and C） of the six baits studied. On the other hand, olfactory reactions of harvester termites toward eight volatile oils （four natural medical plants and four commercial terpines） were repellent, but the most repellent one was cineol and the least one was clove oil. The most tested oils were caused inhibition in feeding, except cedar wood. The most toxic oils were cineol followed by thymol.

目的:通过节细胞内网状层(GCIPL)评估中度和重度青光眼的损伤程度并比较其与视盘周围视网膜神经纤维层(PRNFL)的诊断效能,包括敏感性与特异性及ROC曲线下面积(AUC)。方法:前瞻性研究。共210眼(包括中度青光眼患者30例54眼,重度青光眼患者34例59眼和正常人50例97眼)纳入本研究。所有参与者均接受全面眼科检查,包括视野检查、3D-OCT视盘检查和3D-OCT黄斑部垂直扫描。记录并比较所有参与者的GCIPL和PRNFL的AUC、敏感性与特异性。结果:在中度和重度青光眼组中,上部、下部及整体GCIPL和PRNFL厚度明显变薄(P<0.001)。在中度青光眼组中,GCIPL的敏感度与特异性高于PRNFL(仅上半部分敏感性相同)。重度青光眼组,上部、下部及整体GCIPL的敏感度均低于PRNFL。整体GCIPL的特异性低于PRNFL。上部GCIPL的特异性高于PRNFL。下部GCIPL的特异性与PRNFL相同。结论:对于区分中度和重度青光眼,黄斑GCIPL参数的功能远高于PRNFL。两者联合在病情分析中效果最优,能够提供更准确的损伤程度评估。

New series of Ag, Cd(II), Ce(III), Co(II), Cr(III), Fe(III), Ni(II) and Pb(II) complexes with (E)-N-(4-(2- hydroxybenzylideneamino) phenylsulfonyl) {S.S} have been synthesized. These compounds have been characterized by different physico-chemical techniques like, melting point, elemental analysis, FT-IR, UV spectroscopy, 1H NMR spectroscopy, conductance measurements, magnetic susceptibility and mass spectral analysis. The metal ions concentrations have been determined using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Spectroscopic studies suggest coordination most of complexes in a regular octahedral arrangement in 2L:1M molar ratio by two N azomethine and two OH phenolic from Schiff base {S.S} in the form of [ML2(H2O)2], M metal, L ligand {S.S}. Complexes have been screened for their antibacterial {Gram negative bacteria (Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa)}, {Gram positive bacteria (Bacillus subtilis and Sterptococcus pneumoniae)} and antifungal (Aspergillus fumigates and Candida albicans) showing promising antimicrobial biological activity.

Urine YKL-40 versus Urine NGAL as Potential Markers for Diagnosis of Urinary Tract Infection in Febrile Pediatric Patients

Early diagnosis of urinary tract infection (UTI) in pediatric patients is a prob-lem due to the absence of specific symptoms and difficulty in obtaining the proper urine sample. These difficulties increase the need for effective biomarker for UTI diagnosis in young patients. Neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL) is proved to be a marker for UTI diagnosis. YKL-40 is a glycosyl hydrolase which is produced locally at the sites of inflammation. The objective of our study is to assess the value of YKL-40 as a possible marker for UTI diagnosis in febrile children and to compare its value versus NGAL. Urine culture was used as a gold standard for UTI diagnosis. The study enrolled three groups;febrile children with positive urine culture, febrile children with negative urine culture, and controls without fever and with negative urine culture. Each group included 50 children from patients attended outpatients clinics department of Mansoura University Children Hospital. For each patient enrolled in the study, complete blood count, C-reactive protein, serum creatinine, urine creatinine, routine urine analysis and urine culture were assessed. Using ELISA test, urine values of NGAL (uNGAL) and YKL-40 (uYKL-40) were measured and normalized to urine creatinine (uNGAL/uCr) and (uYKL40/uCr) respectively. The values of uNGAL, uYKL-40, uNGAL/Cr and uYKL-40/Cr were significantly higher in febrile UTI group. The receiver operating curve (ROC) show the optimum cut off value for urine YKL-40 (171.5 pg) with 84% senstivity, 82% specificity and the area under the ROC curve (AUC) 0.95. The optimum cutoff value of uYKL-40/Cr was (159.2 pg/mg) with 72% sensitivity, 71% specificity and 0.81 AUC. Higher sensitivity and specificity of uYKL-40 and uYKL40/Cr compared to uNGAL and uNGAL/Cr respectively were observed. In conclusion, the diagnostic value of uYKL-40 is superior to that of uNGAL. Urine YKL-40 could be a good marker for diagnosis of UTI in febrile pediatric patients.

To improve the phosphorus(P)recovery efficiency from livestock wastewater,a novel MgO doped mildewed corn biochar with thermal pre-puffing treatment(Mg-PBC)and without pre-puffing(Mg-BC)was synthesized and *** thermal-puffing pretreatment improved the effectiveness of metal soaking and MgO dispersion.P recovery time with Mg-PBC(7 h)was significantly shorter than that with Mg-BC(12 h).Moreover,Mg-PBC showed significantly higher P recovery capacity(241 mg g^(−1))than Mg-BC(96.6 mg g^(−1)).P recovery capacity of the Mg-PBC fitted to the Thomas model was 90.7 mg g^(−1),which was 4 times higher than that of Mg-BC(22.9 mg g^(−1))under column test *** mechanisms involved in P recovery included precipitation,surface complexation,and electrostatic *** adsorption,both Mg-BC and Mg-PBC showed relatively low regeneration *** P loaded Mg-BC(Mg-BC-P)and Mg-PBC(Mg-PBC-P),the later particularly,obviously increased the available P content and promoted plant *** release of P increased with time in the Mg-PBC-P treated soil,while it decreased with time in the P fertilizer treated soil.A cost-benefit analysis revealed that thermal-puffing pretreatment greatly increased the profit of MgO doped biochar from−0.66 to 5.90 US$kg^(−1).These findings highlight that biomass pre-puffing is a feasible treatment to produce MgO modified biochar and to recover P from livestock wastewater,and that the Mg-PBC-P can be used as a slow-release P fertilizer.

MBL2 Gene Polymorphism and the Association with Neonatal Sepsis in Egyptian Neonates, a Case Control Study

Mannose binding lectin (MBL) is an important component of innate immunity particularly in neonates whose adaptive immunity is not fully developed. Polymorphism in MBL2 gene promoter and exon1 determines MBL serum level and function. The aim of this study was to investigate the frequency of different MBL2 genotypes in neonatal sepsis among patients of neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Two hundred and forty-five neonates were enrolled in this study (127 infected and 118 uninfected controls). Multiplex PCR and double amplification refractory mutation system (dARMS) were used for typing of MBL2 exon1 and promoter respectively. Klebsiella species were the most frequently isolated organisms (22.8%). There is no statistical significance difference in the distribution of different expression genotypes between infected group and controls (P = 0.11). However, prevalence of low MBL2 expression genotypes (XA/O and O/O) was higher in infected patients compared to control group (patients 25.2% and controls 15.3%). Low and medium MBL2 expression genotypes were mostly associated with Gram-negative bacterial infections (18.9% and 22.8%) respectively. A statistically significant association of Gram-negative bacterial infections with low MBL2 expression genotypes was found (P = 0.02). Higher frequency of AB and BB genotypes was observed (31.5% and 7.9%) in patients group compared to control, but without statistical significant difference.

Crystal morphology of metal oxides in engineered metal-biochar composites governs the removal of phosphorus(P)from aqueous *** to our best knowledge,preparation of bio-assembled MgO-coated biochar and its application for the removal of P from solutions and kitchen waste fermentation liquids have not yet been ***,in this study,a needle-like MgO particle coated tea waste biochar composite(MTC)was prepared through a novel biological assembly and template elimination *** produced MTC was used as an adsorbent for removing P from a synthetic solution and real kitchen waste fermentation *** maximum P sorption capacities of the MTC,deduced from the Langmuir model,were 58.80 mg g^(−1) from the solution at pH 7 and 192.8 mg g^(−1) from the fermentation liquid at pH *** increase of ionic strength(0-0.1 mol L^(−1) NaNO_(3))reduced P removal efficiency from 98.53%to 93.01%in the synthetic solution but had no significant impact on P removal from the fermentation *** of MgHPO4 and Mg(H2PO4)2(76.5%),ligand exchange(18.0%),and electrostatic attraction(5.5%)were the potential mechanisms for P sorption from the synthetic solution,while struvite formation(57.6%)and ligand exchange(42.2%)governed the sorption of P from the kitchen waste fermentation *** to previously reported MgO-biochar composites,MTC had a lower P sorption capacity in phosphate solution but a higher P sorption capacity in fermentation ***,the studied MTC could be used as an effective candidate for the removal of P from aqueous environments,and especially from the fermentation *** the future,it will be necessary to systematically compare the performance of metal-biochar composites with different metal oxide crystal morphology for P removal from different types of wastewater.

Chickpea yield is decreasing day by day due to drought stress,which could be an immense risk for future food security in developing *** practices could be the most excellent approach to diminish loss due to this abiotic *** current research work was designed to explore the tolerance reaction of chickpea genotypes against management practices,through morphological and biochemical parameters and evaluate yield performance across drought prone location of *** genotypes BD-6048,BD-6045,BD-6090,BD-6092 and eight management practices,e.g.,severe water stress(SWS),i.e.,without irrigation,10 cm thick mulching with rice straw(MRS),10 cm thick mulching with water hyacinth(MWH),organic amendment through compost(OAC)@3 t ha−1,organic amendment through cow dung@5 t ha−1(OACD),organic amendment through poultry manure@2 t ha−1(OAPM),inorganic amendment through proline application(IAPA)as foliar spray and 16 h hydro-priming(HP).The study revealed that the genotypes BD-6048 showed excellent performance because of the highest chlorophyll,carotenoids,phosphorus,potassium,proline and protein *** highest pod number plant−1 also increased seed yield in *** management practices,IAPA increased relative water content,carotenoids,leaf phosphorus and potassium compared to other management practices and severe water ***,BD-6084 was selected as best genotype because of a significant increase in chlorophyll a and b,carotenoids,and relative water content with *** top performing genotypes can be used for releasing variety and cultivated for sustainable production in drought prone area of Bangladesh.

Background Acute kidney injury(AKI)is common in critically ill children with significant mortality and *** creatinine is an insensitive and late biomarker compared to newly proposed AKI *** Prospective study in pediatric intensive care unit(PICU)over three months to compare between serum cystatin-C(s-Cys-C)and urinary neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin(uNGAL)as AKI biomarkers at multiple time points with pediatric risk,injury,failure,loss,end-stage renal disease(pRIFLE)classification in diagnosing *** Forty children were *** these 40 children,22 developed AKI according to pRIFLE *** was no significant difference between AKI and non-AKI in age(P=0.29).Post cardiac surgery,renal insult was the main cause of AKI(27.3%).There was a twofold increased risk of incident AKI in those patients with high baseline uNGAL at PICU admission and almost a fourfold increased risk in patients with high baseline s-Cys-C at PICU *** levels were highly predictive of AKI during the follow-up period[area under the curve(AUC)=0.76,95%confidence interval(CI)0.61-0.92].The cutoff point with the highest correctly classified proportion was 223 ng/mL(≥12 centiles)which correctly predict 80.0%patients with AKI,with a corresponding sensitivity of 72.7%and a specificity of 89.9%.AUC for s-Cys-C was 0.86(95%CI 0.75-0.97),and the highest correctly classified proportion was 1009μg/L(≥13 centiles);75%of patients with AKI,with a corresponding sensitivity of 63.6%and a specificity of 88.9%.Conclusion uNGAL and s-Cys-C predicts AKI early in critically ill children.
