Impact of Forestry Interventions on Groundwater Recharge and sediment Control in the Ganga River Basin

Water related services of natural infrastructure will help to combat the risk of water crisis, and nature-based solutions involve the management of ecosystems to mimic or optimize the natural processes for the provision and regulation of water. Forested areas provide environmental stability and supply a high proportion of the world’s accessible freshwater for domestic, agricultural, industrial and ecological needs. The present work on “Forestry Interventions for Ganga” to rejuvenate the river is one of the steps toward the Ganga River rejuvenation programme in the country. The consequences of forestry interventions for Ganga will be determined on the basis of water quantity and water quality in the Ganga River. The study conservatively estimated the water savings and sedimentation reduction of the riverscape management in the Ganga basin using the soil Conservation service Curve Number (sCs-CN) & GEC, 2015 and Trimble, 1999 & CWC, 2019 methodologies, respectively. Forestry plantations and soil and moisture conservation measures devised in the programme to rejuvenate the Ganga River are expected to increase water recharge and decrease sedimentation load by 231.011 MCM·yrsup>-1sup> and 1119.6 cubic m·yrsup>-1sup> or 395.20 tons·yrsup>-1sup>, respectively, in delineated riverscape area of 83,946 kmsup>2sup> in Ganga basin due to these interventions. The role of trees and forests in improving hydrologic cycles, soil infiltration and ground water recharge in Ganga basin seems to be the reason for this change. Forest plantations and other bioengineering techniques can help to keep rivers perennial, increase precipitation, prevent soil erosion and mitigate floods, drought & climate change. The bioengineering techniques could be a feasible tool to enhance rivers’ self-purification as well as to make river perennial. The results will give momentum to the National Mission of Clean Ganga (NMCG) and its Namami Gange programme including other important

Proton probing of laser-driven EM pulses travelling inhelical coils

The ultrafast charge dynamics following the interaction of an ultra-intense laser pulse with a foil target leads to the launch of an ultra-short, intense electromagnetic(EM) pulse along a wire connected to the target. Due to the strong electric field(of the order of GV m^(-1)) associated to such laser-driven EM pulses, these can be exploited in a travelling-wave helical geometry for controlling and optimizing the parameters of laser accelerated proton beams. The propagation of the EM pulse along a helical path was studied by employing a proton probing technique. The pulse-carrying coil was probed along two orthogonal directions, transverse and parallel to the coil axis. The temporal profile of the pulse obtained from the transverse probing of the coil is in agreement with the previous measurements obtained in a planar geometry. The data obtained from the longitudinal probing of the coil shows a clear evidence of an energy dependent reduction of the proton beam divergence, which underpins the mechanism behind selective guiding of laser-driven ions by the helical coil targets.

Development of low power non-thermal plasma jet and optimization of operational parameters for treating dyes and emerging contaminants

Non-thermal plasma has emerged as an effective treatment system against the latest class of highly recalcitrant and toxic environmental pollutants termed emerging contaminants(ECs).In the present work,a detailed experimental study is carried out to evaluate the efficacy of a non-thermal plasma jet with two dyes,Rd.B and ***,as model *** plasma jet provided a complete dye decoloration in 30 min with an applied voltage of 6.5 kV_(p-p).·OH,having the highest oxidation potential,acts as the main reactive species,which with direct action on contaminants also acts indirectly by getting converted into H_(2)O_(2)and O_(3).Further,the effect of critical operational parameters viz,sample pH,applied voltage(4.5–6.5 kV_(p-p)),conductivity(5–20 ms cm^(-1)),and sample distance on plasma treatment efficacy was also *** of all the assessed parameters,the applied voltage and sample conductivity was found to be the most significant operating parameters.A high voltage and low conductivity favored the dye decoloration,while the pH effect was not that *** understand the influence of plasma discharge gas on treatment efficacy,all the experiments are conducted with argon and helium gases under the fixed geometrical *** the gases provided a similar dye decoloration *** DBD plasma system with complete dye removal also rendered maximum mineralization of 73%for Rd.B,and 60%for ***,the system's efficiency against the actual ECs(four pharmaceutical compounds,viz,metformin,atenolol,acetaminophen,and ranitidine)and microbial contaminant(***)was also *** system showed effectivity in the complete removal of targeted pharmaceuticals and a log2.5 *** *** present systematic characterization of dye degradation could be of interest to large communities working towards commercializing plasma treatment systems.

Hydroxychavicol,a polyphenol from Piper betle leaf extract,induces cell cycle arrest and apoptosis in TP53-resistant HT-29 colon cancer cells

This study aims to elucidate the antiproliferative mechanism of hydroxychavicol(HC).Its effects on cell cycle,apoptosis,and the expression of c-Jun N-terminal kinase(JNK)and P38 mitogen-activated protein kinase(MAPK)in HT-29 colon cancer cells were *** was isolated from Piper betle leaf(PBL)and verified by high-performance liquid chromatography(HPLC),nuclear magnetic resonance(NMR),and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry(GC-Ms).The cytotoxic effects of the standard drug 5-fluorouracil(5-FU),PBL water extract,and HC on HT-29 cells were measured after 24,48,and 72 h of *** cycle and apoptosis modulation by 5-FU and HC treatments were investigated up to 30 *** in phosphorylated JNK(pJNK)and P38(pP38)MAPK expression were observed up to 18 *** half maximal inhibitory concentration(IC_(50))values of HC(30μg/mL)and PBL water extract(380μg/mL)were achieved at 24 h,whereas the IC_(50)of 5-FU(50μmol/L)was obtained at 72 *** cycle arrest at the G0/G1 phase in HC-treated cells was observed from12 h *** apoptotic cell death in HC-treated cells compared to 5-FU-treated cells(Ps *** expression of pJNK and pP38 MAPK was observed at 12 h in HC-treated cells,but not in 5-FU-treated HT-29 cells(Ps concluded that HC induces cell cycle arrest and apoptosis of HT-29 cells,with these actions possibly mediated by JNK and P38 MAPK.

Use of Telemedicine in Postgraduate Pathology Education

Objective: Telemedicine is the use of telecommunication for medical diagnosis, treatment, health education and research. Telepathology is diagnostic pathology at a distance. It functions with images viewed on a video monitor rather than directly through a microscope. Many years have passed since the evolution of telepathology. But no study has yet been done to evaluate the benefits postgraduates got through this. Therefore this study is undertaken to analyse the different impacts of telepathology on the postgraduate learning. Material and Methods: The study was done in Telemedicine Center of s. C. B. Medical College, Cuttack over a period of 9 years. The telepathology service was carried out by store and forward method using a CCD, a large computer server and a huge bandwidth network service (VsAT). The sessions with sGPGI, Lucknow were analysed and the benefits of postgraduates were studied. Results: The number of sessions held was 95. Out of which 92 sessions were with sGPGI. It included 202 cases transmitted from Lucknow and 186 cases from s. C. B. Medical College, Cuttack. The postgraduates had a chance to exposure to rare cases in renal pathology, dermatopathology and hepatopathology. The overall concordance rate with glass slide diagnosis was 87%. Conclusion: The diagnostic expertise through light microscopy and tele-images are not the same. But the telepathology system increased the ability of image analysis, histopathologic diagnosis of our postgraduates and also exposed them to many rare and interesting cases.

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is believed to be triggered by increased levels/aggregation of β-amyloid (Aβ) peptides. At present, there is no effective disease-modifying treatment for AD. Here, we evaluated the therapeutic potential of FDA-approved native poly(D,L-lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA) nanoparticles on Aβ aggregation and in cellular/ animal models of AD. Our results showed that native PLGA can not only suppress the spontaneous aggregation but can also trigger disassembly of preformed Aβ aggregates. spectroscopic studies, molecular dynamics simu-lations and biochemical analyses revealed that PLGA, by interacting with the hydrophobic domain of Aβ1-42, prevents a conformational shift towards the β-sheet structure, thus precluding the formation and/or triggering disassembly of Aβ aggregates. PLGA-treated Aβ samples can enhance neuronal viability by reducing phosphor-ylation of tau protein and its associated signaling mechanisms. Administration of PLGA can interact with Aβ aggregates and attenuate memory deficits as well as Aβ levels/deposits in the 5xFAD mouse model of AD. PLGA can also protect iPsC-derived neurons from AD patients against Aβ toxicity by decreasing tau phosphorylation. These findings provide unambiguous evidence that native PLGA, by targeting different facets of the Aβ axis, can have beneficial effects in mouse neurons/animal models as well as on iPsC-derived AD neurons - thus signifying its unique therapeutic potential in the treatment of AD pathology.

An Inventory Model for Deteriorating Items under Conditionally Permissible Delay in Payments Depending on the Order Quantity

The purpose of this inventory model is to investigate the retailer’s optimal replenishment policy under permissible delay in payments. In this paper, we assume that the supplier would offer the retailer partially permissible delay in payments when the order quantity is smaller than a predetermined quantity (W). The most inventory systems are usually formed without considering the effect of deterioration of items which deteriorate continuously like fresh fruits, vegetables etc. Here we consider the loss due to deterioration. In real world situation, the demand of some items varies with change of seasons and occasions. so it is more significant if the loss of deterioration is time dependent. Considering all these facts, this inventory model has been developed to make more realistic and flexible marketing policy to the retailer, also establish the result by ANOVA analysis by treating different model parameters as factors.

Due to the rapid growth of online transactions on the Internet, authentication, non-repudiation and integrity are very essential security requirements for a secure transaction. To achieve these security goals, digital signature is the most efficient cryptographic primitive. Many authors have proposed this scheme and prove their security and evaluate the efficiency. In our paper, we present comprehensive study of conventional digital signature schemes based on RsA, DsA and ECDsA (Elliptic Curve Digital signature Algorithm) and the improved version of these scheme.

Temporal and spatial Distribution of Nutrients and HABs at Coastal Water of Kota Belud, sabah

A study was carried out to determine the temporal and spatial distribution of nutrients and Harmful Algal Blooming species (HABs) to establish the relationship between nutrient concentrations and HABs density in the coastal water of Kota Belud, sabah, Malaysia. Eight stations were set up in four transects (each transect had two stations;one 500 meters seawards from shoreline, and another five kilometers seawards from shoreline) along the Kota Belud coastal area. Phytoplankton samples, water samples and in situ environmental parameters were collected during dry and wet seasons. Altogether nine HABs species were identified from the study area, where six species (Pyrodinium bahamense, Prorocentum micans, Neoceratium furca, Prorocentum sigmoides, Dinophysis caudate, and Neoceratium fursus) belonged to Dinophyceae and three species (Thalassionema nitzchoioides, Chatoceros affinis, Rhizosolenia sp.) belonged to Bacillariophyceae. Among nine species, Chatoceros affinis was the most abundance composed of 80.6% of total species recorded from all stations during study period. Among the toxic producing Dinoflagellate, Pyrodinium bahamense bloom (>10sup>3sup> cells/l) was observed during study period. Trong linear relationship (rsup>2sup> = 0.80) was observed between the cell density and concentration of nitrate nitrogen. Relationship between cell density and phosphate phosphorus was poor (rsup>2sup> = 0.51). The study showed that increasing in nutrient concentrations resulted in the increasing of HABs density. Nitrate was seen to be more important than phosphate in Kota Belud water as limiting factor of the growth of HABs.

OBJECTIVEs:Proteins are the major component and play a key role in nutritious and therapeutic functions of edible bird’s nest(EBN);however,limited studies have been conducted on the protein due to difficulties in extraction,isolation as well as *** study aimed to provide comprehensive information for the quality evaluation of EBN peptides,which would be a valuable reference for further study on EBN ***:Here,we developed a quality control method using high performance liquid chromatography(HPLC)peptide fingerprints deriving from EBN being digested with simulated gastric *** characteristic peptide peaks were collected and identified by LC-Ms/***:The characteristic peptide peaks,corresponding to the protein fragments of acidic mammalian chitinase-like,lysyl oxidase,and Mucin-5AC-like,were identified and ***,the principal component analysis indicated that the fingerprints were able to discriminate colour of EBN(white/red)and production sites(cave/house)of White EBN on the same weight *** proposed by the model developed in this study,Muc-5AC-like and AMCaselike proteins were the markers with the highest discriminative ***:The overall findings suggest that HPLC peptide fingerprints were able to clearly demonstrate peptide profile differences between genuine and adulterated EBN samples;and classify EBN samples by its color and production *** addition,the protein identification results suggested that Muc-5AC-like protein was the major protein in EBN.
