Circular cylinder wakes and their control under the influence of oscillatory flows: A numerical study

Understanding and control of wake vortices past a circular cylinder is a cardinal problem of interest to ocean *** wake formation and vortex shedding behind a variety of ocean structures such as spars,are subjected to fatigue failure limiting their life *** additional influences due to ocean waves and currents further exacerbate these *** the present study,flow past an isolated circu-lar cylindrical structure subjected to an oscillatory upstream are numerically *** studies involve high resolution simulations over the low Reynolds number range(100-200).Although the prac-tical range of interest is in high Reynolds number range of 103-105,the flow physics and a number of qualitative and quantitative aspects are similar to the low Reynolds number *** the high Reynolds number range,statistical averaging tools in conjunction with suitable closure models would be *** control of wake vortices is achieved with the aid of two small rotors located in the aft of the main cylinder.A control algorithm was coupled to determine the quantum of actuation to the rotating *** control of wake vortices was observed for harmonic in-let forcing,residual vortical structures were found to persist at higher amplitudes of *** study the efficacy of this control,numerical simulations were further extended,when the circular cylinder was flexibly *** con-trol of flow induced vibrations was observed to be reasonably effective in controlling the wake generated behind the main cylinder due to oscillatory upstream.

An insight on occurrence of Fe-rich spherules from the Central Indian Ocean Basin(CIOB)provides an understanding of their distribution at a water depth of>5,000 *** the present study,Fe-rich spherules are identified to occur in two different sediment types(i.e.,siliceous and pelagic)and tectonic settings(*** seamounts and fracture zones).These are single spheres or aggregates,of different sizes(63 to 390μm)and show textural variability(smooth/quenched,brickwork,corkscrew,interlocking and dendritic).A comparative study based on physical morphology and chemical composition suggests a common mechanism of *** association of spherules with fracture zones(FZ)and seamounts signifies that morpho-tectonic features play an important role in fluid-driven *** on the evidence and geologic conditions existing in the basin,we conclude that molten fuel-coolant interaction(MFCI)coupled with submarine hydrothermal exhalations could be an ideal mechanism for the formation of spherules and *** accretion of the spherules on the surface sediments could be a result of recent volcanic phenomena,while those occurring at different depths(280-355,and 460-475 cm-bsf)within the sediment core indicate two different *** study provides a global implication in understanding fluid-driven magmatism in a deep-sea intraplate environment.

Effect of surface Polishing Treatment on the Fatigue Performance of shot-Peened Ti–6Al–4V Alloy

In this study, shot peening is applied to the titanium alloy Ti–6Al–4V, and the surface treatment effect on fatigue life of shot-peened specimens under high cycle loading is investigated. The induced residual stress is measured by using the orbital hole-drilling method. surface profilometer and optical microscopy are employed to characterize the surface roughness and morphology. The deformed microstructure layers of the shot-peened specimens are investigated by using scanning electron microscopy. Experiments reveal that the fatigue life of Ti–6Al–4V is improved by the shot peening process, and the surface pre-peening polishing. The combination of pre-and post-peening polishing treatments further improves fatigue life of Ti–6Al–4V specimens. The present work provides useful guidelines for developing more efficient shot peening strategies.

A switch Agent for Wireless sensor Nodes with Dual Interfaces: Implementation and Evaluation

Data generation in wireless sensor networks could be bursty as it is dictated by the presence or absence of events of interest that generate these data. While conventional sensor nodes possessed only one radio interface, next generation sensor nodes are expected to have two （possibly more） radio interfaces, each with different ranges, capacities, and power consumptions. Equipping sensor nodes with dual radios has its own benefits and can be quite useful in handling bursty traffic while at the same time satisfying the application＇s delivery requirements. In this paper, we propose an adaptive interface switch agent that intelligently selects the interface to be used for data transmission at a sensor node based on the data burst length or end-to-end delay while taking into consideration power consumption and throughput. The proposed work generalizes earlier works in this area to enable both the source nodes and intermediate data forwarding nodes to initiate the activation of high power radios so that they can be utilized to a higher degree for converge-cast communication. We have performed extensive simulations with sensor nodes containing both IEEE 802.15.4 and IEEE 802.11 compatible radios. Our simulation results indicate that the switch agent yields throughput, delay, and packet delivery ratio comparable to the higher bandwidth interface alone, without incurring much energy wastage.

Endophytic fungi of wild legume sesbania bispinosa in coastal sand dunes and mangroves of the southwest coast of India

Evaluation of 450 surface sterilized tissue segments of a seasonal wild legume, sesbania bispinosa （Jacq.）, of coastal sand dunes and mangroves of southwest India yielded 546 isolates comprising 39 endophytic fungi with six dominant taxa （Aspergillus flavus, Aspergillus niger, Cladosporium tenuissimum, Fusarium moniliforme, Penicillium chrysogenum and morpho sp. 1）. A consortium of saprophytic, pathogenic and toxigenic fungi exists as endophytes in s. bispinosa. Number of segments colonized, number of isolates obtained, species richness and diversity were higher in s. bispinosa in mangroves compared to coastal sand dunes. seeds yielded more fungal isolates, but species richness and diversity were low. In spite of low fungal colonization in root segments, the diversity was high. Up to 30-40 % endophytic fungi of s. bispinosa differed between coastal sand dunes and mangroves revealing partial host- and habitat-specificity. As s. bispi- nosa is extensively used as green manure and forage in southwest India, further studies especially on the bioactive compounds of its endophytic fungi might broaden its range of uses. In addition to conventional morphologicaltechniques, molecular tools would provide precise insight on the endophytic fungi of coastal sand dunes and mangroves.

Aquatic hyphomycetes in the lateritic cave streams of southwestern India

For the first time,assemblage and diversity of aquatic hyphomycetes were investigated in four lateritic cave streams of the southwest coast of *** study includes physicochemical features of cave habitats and stream *** richness,diversity and equitability of aquatic hyphomycetes in foam,water,leaf litter and woody litter(bark and cambium)have been *** cave streams yielded up to 21 species of aquatic hyphomycetes,which is comparable to the population in nearby *** leaf litter of cave streams consist of highest number of species,while it was the lowest in the foam samples(15 vs.7 spp.).Cave stream water,bark and cambium consist of 14,11 and 9 species,***’s and shannon’s diversities were the highest in water samples,while the Pielou’s equitability was highest in foam *** species richness as well as the core-group(highly frequent)aquatic hyphomycetes are comparable with nearby *** megalospora,Anguillospora angulata,***,Condylospora spumigena,Ingoldiella fibulata and Trinacrium subtile were the new records to the coastal region of southwest India.

Investigation of decay modes of superheavy nuclei

A detailed investigation of different decay modes,namely alpha decay,beta decay,cluster decay including heavy particle emission(Z_(c)>28),and spontaneous fission,was carried out,leading to the identification of new cluster and beta-plus emitters in superheavy nucle with 104≤Z≤*** the first time,we identified around20 beta-plus emitters in superheavy ***-particle radioactivity was observed in superheavy elements of atomic number in the range 116≤Z≤126.^(292-293)Og were identified as ^(86)Kr emitters,and ^(298)122 and ^(300)122 were identified as ^(94)Zr emitters,whereas heavy-particle radioactivity from ^(91)Y was also observed in ^(299)***,the nuclei ^(300)124 and ^(306)126 exhibit ^(96)Mo *** reported regions of beta-plus and heavyparticle radioactivity for superheavy nuclei are stronger than those for alpha *** identified decay modes for superheavy nuclei are presented in a *** study is intended to serve as a reference for identifying possible decay modes in the superheavy region.

Ferromagnetic–paramagnetic transition temperature in bulk and nanostructured La_(0.7)sr_xCa_(0.3-x)MnO_3(x=0.10, 0.15, and 0.20) manganite materials

series of bulk and nanostructured La0.7srxCa0.3-xMnO3（x = 0.10, 0.15, and 0.20） manganites were synthesized and characterized using different techniques. In the series, both the bulk and nanostructured La0.7sr0.10Ca0.20MnO3 and La0.7sr0.20Ca0.10MnO3 manganites have orthorhombic and rhombohedral structures, whereas La0.7sr0.15Ca0.15MnO3 manganite has rhombohedral and orthorhombic structures, respectively. Online ultrasonic velocity and attenuation measurements were taken through an indigenously designed ultrasonic setup, and the analysis was done from 300 to 400 K during the aging of the samples to explore the structural/phase transitions. The bulk and nanocrystalline La0.7srxCa0.3-xMnO3 perovskite samples show the particle size distribution in the range of 197-943 and 24-93 nm, respectively. The addition of sr^2＋ alters the size of particles, which decrease in size. The observed anomaly in ultrasonic velocities, attenuations, and elastic moduli is correlated with the ferromagnetic-paramagnetic（FM-PM） transition temperature（TC） in both bulk and nanocrystalline perovskites. In addition, the shift in TC and the magnitude and width of observed anomaly are correlated with the value of x to study the behavior of TC.

Macrofungal assemblage with two tree species in scrub jungles of south-west India

Macrofungi are common and widespread in scrub jungles of southwest India during monsoon *** of macrofungi in the vicinity of two tree species Anacardium occidentale(introduced)and Terminalia paniculata(native)were *** on different substrates(soil,leaf litter,wood,bark,seeds,live roots and insect)in and around trees was monitored at weekly intervals up to 12 weeks during southwest monsoon season based on the quadrat *** number of macrofungi were associated with Terminalia compared to Anacardium(36 vs.22 spp.)and 14 species were in *** species richness ranged from 2-8,which was almost opposing between tree species on each week with a gradual *** sporocarp richness ranged from 3-61 in Anacardium,while it was from 8-132 in Terminalia with two peaks during week 4 and 7 followed by a steep *** species accumulation curve reached a plateau after four weeks in Anacardium,while it was exponential in Terminalia until 12 *** simpson and shannon diversities were higher in Terminalia compared to Anacardium with low Pielou’s *** Anacardium,mushrooms were found on six substrates with a highest on soil as well as wood(9 spp.),while on seven substrates in Terminalia with a highest in soil(18 spp.).Anacardium was in association with one,while Terminalia with three ectomycorrhizal *** pattern of distribution and diversity of macrofungi have been compared with earlier studies with different habitats of scrub jungles.
