Long-term differences in urinary, bowel and sexual function among men treated with surgery versus radiation for prostate cancer

surgery and radiation have both been shown to increase the longterm diseasespecific survival rate for men with din icaUy localized prostate cancer. Although both modalities have demonstrated favor able effects on cancer control, questions regarding quality of life （QoL） and func tional outcomes remain incompletely answered. To date, no randomized prospective trials have been performed comparing the two treatment modalities and so indirect compar isons of longterm functional outcomes have served as a substitute to aid in patient coun seling and decisionmaking. As there is a pau city of longterm data comparing functional outcomes after radical prostatectomy and external beam radiation therapy, a recent art icle by Resnick et al.,1 has attempted to pro vide additional information about this topic in terms of continence, erectile function and bowel function. Utilizing the Prostate Cancer Outcomes study cohort, a populationbased cohort of men diagnosed with prostate cancer in the pro statespecific antigen （PsA） era, the authors compared rates of urinary incontinence, erect ile dysfunction, and bowel urgency at 2, 5 and 15 years after primary therapy. They showed that men undergoing prostatectomy had higher rates of incontinence and erectile dys function at 2 and 5 years, but these rates were similar to those in the radiotherapy group at 15 years. More specifically, men were approxi mately five times more likely to have urinary continence issues if they underwent prostatec tomv versus radiotherapy and almost three anda half times more likely to develop erectile dys function in the short to intermediateterm following primary treatment. As expected, rates of bowel urgency were higher in the radio therapy group at 2 and 5 years, but not sig nificantly different from the surgery group at 15 years. The animal diet of the carnivorous Venus flytrap, Dionaea muscipula, contains a sodium load that enters the capture organ via an HKT1-type sodium channel, expressed in special epithelia cells on the inner trap lobe surface. DmHKT1 expression and sodium uptake activity is induced upon prey contact. Here, we analyzed the HKT1 properties required for prey sodium osmolyte management of carnivorous Dionaea. Analyses were based on homology modeling, generation of model-derived point mutants, and their functional testing in Xenopus oocytes. We showed that the wild-type HKT1 and its Na^＋- and K^＋-permeable mutants function as ion channels rather than K^＋ transporters driven by proton or sodium gradients. These structural and biophysical features of a high-capacity, Na^＋-selective ion channel enable Dionaea glands to manage prey-derived sodium loads without confounding the action potential-based information management of the flytrap.

Hot Deformation Characteristics of 34CrMo4 steel

The 34CrMo4 （AIsI 4130） steel is extensively utilized in the compressed natural gas cylinders. Due to the importance of thermomechanical processing in the production of these cylinders, the dynamic reerystallization （DRX） characteristics of 34CrMo4 steel were investigated. The effect of hot deformation parameters such as temperature and strain rate on the dynamic restoration processes of a 34CrMo4 alloy was studied. Hot compression tests were performed in the temperature range of 900 to 1 100 ℃ and the strain rate range of 0. 001 to 0.1 s-1. Hot workability of this alloy has been analyzed by employing flow localization parameter. The flow curves observed are typical of occurrence of dynamic recrystallization and have exhibited single or multiple peaks in flow stress curve before reaching steady state, depending on the temperature and strain rates. The flow stress decreases with the increase of deformation temperature and the decrease of strain rate. Finally the activation energy obtained in this research is 490. 749 kJ/mol.

Do non-target species visit feeders and water troughs targeting small game?A study from farmland spain using camera-trapping

Provision of food and water is a widespread tool implemented around the world for the benefit of game and other wildlife,but factors affecting the use of food and water by non-target species are poorly *** evaluated visits to feeders and water troughs by non-game species using camera-traps in two separate areas of *** and water troughs were either“protected”(when surrounded by more than 50%of shrubs/forest)or“open”(in the opposite case).A total of 18948 photos from 5344 camera-trapping days depicted animals,and 75 species were *** and water troughs were visited by target species(partridges and lagomorphs,55.3%of visits)and non-target species(44.7%of visits).Among the latter,corvids were themost common(46.1%of visits),followed by rodents(26.8%),other birds(23.6%,mainly passerines),columbids(1.9%),and other species at minor *** highest proportion of visiting days to feeders and water troughs was from corvids(0.173)followed by otherbirds(0.109)and rodents(0.083);the lowest proportion was recorded for columbids(0.016).Use intensity and visit frequency of water troughs tripled that recorded in feeders,and visits to open feeders/troughs were approximately twice those to protected *** summary:feeders and water troughs targeting small game species are also used regularly by non-target ones;they should be set close to cover to optimize their use by non-target species that are not competitors of target species(though corvids may visit them);water availability should be prioritized where drought periods are expected.

Etiology and resistance of asymptomatic bacteriuria isolates among school going children in sanadaj-Iran

Objective:The objective of this study was to determine the etiology and antimicrobial susceptibility patterns of asymptomatic bacteriuria pathogens isolated among school going children in sanandaj,***:A total of 1 457 urine samples of 5 to 10 years children from forty different schools of sanandaj city were screened to see asymptomatic bacteriuria during November 2007 to June ***:Bacterial colony count of over (105) colony forming units CFU/ mL were found in 28(1.90%) of total cases,with 767(52.64%) girls and 690(47.35%) *** highest class-specific prevalence was found in the fourth standard(2.8%) and the lowest in the first standard(1.0%).The dominant bacterial isolates were *** 20(74.1%),followed by Klebsiella pneumoniae 04(14.8%) and staphylococcus aureus 04(14.8%).Cefotaxime,Cefixime,Kanamycin, Co-trimoxazole,nalidicxic acid,nitrofurantoin and Amoxicillin,resistance rates were above 90.0%. Ceftriaxone expressed the highest susceptibility among *** ***,*** showed 100. 0%resistance to ***:In the present study in which Escherichia coli is the most frequently incriminated as the causative *** results show a very serious antibiotic resistance of *** isolated. surveillance and monitoring studies will be essential in preventing of renal scarring or other abnormalities.

The enantioselective cycloetherification of substituted keto phenols into their corresponding dihydrobenzofuran derivatives was carried out using hydrogen peroxide and chiral quaternary ammonium iodide in micellar media. This approach increased the conversion rate of cycloetherification and also widened the scope of this particular reaction for various substituted keto phenols with electron withdrawing as well as electron donating functionalities. The use of a surfactant in the cycloetherification reaction increased the yield of the corresponding enantioselective dihydrobenzofuran four times. The conversion rate of keto phenols into their corresponding dihydrobenzofuran derivatives was proportional to the concentration of the surfactant used in the reaction.
