An evaluation of the incidence of Crypticerya multicicatrices and Maconellicoccus hirsutus in Colombian seaflower Biosphere Reserve in san Andrés, Providence and santa Catalina islands, from mid-August to mid-November 2012 was made. 38 locations were sampled, and 34% of sites tested show an incidence of C. multicicatrices oscillating between a range of 80%-100%, 24% with 40%-80% of incidence, 18% between 10%-40% and 24% with a range of 0%-10%. The occurrence of M. hirsutus fluctuated between 0.5% and 17%. There were seven genera of ants associated C. multicicatrices and 94 hosts of this agriculturally important insect and we found high incidence of associated sooty mold in C. multicicatrices hosts. Observations also contained some developmental stages of C. multicatrices.

Variation in offspring sex ratios is a central topic in animal demography and population *** studies have focused on bird species with marked sexual dimorphism and multiple-nestling broods,where the offspring sex ratio is often biased due to different individual or environmental ***,biases in offspring sex ratios have been far less investigated in monomorphic and single-egg laying species,and few studies have evaluated long-term and large-scale variations in the sex ratio of nestling ***,we explore individual and environmental factors potentially affecting the secondary sex ratio of the monomorphic griffon vulture Gyps *** used information collected at three breeding nuclei from central spain over a 30-year period(1990–2020)to analyse the effects of nestling age,parental age,breeding phenology,conspecific density,population reproductive parameters,and spatial and temporal variability on nestling *** ratio did not differ from parity either at the population or the nuclei *** significant between-year differences were detected,even under highly changing conditions of food availability associated with the mad-cow *** found that tree nesting breeders tend to have more sons than daughters,but as this nesting behavior is rare and we consequently have a small sample size,this issue would require additional *** further research is needed to assess the potential effect of breeder identity on nestling sex ratio,this study contributes to understanding the basic ecology and population dynamics of Griffon Vultures,a long-lived species with deferred maturity and low fecundity,whose minor deviations in the offspring sex ratio might imply major changes at the population level.

Here,we propose a method to determine the thickness of the most common transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) placed on the surface of transparent stamps,used for the deterministic placement of two-dimensional materials,by analyzing the red,green and blue channels of transmission-mode optical microscopy images of the *** particular,the blue channel transmittance shows a large and monotonic thickness dependence,making it a very convenient probe of the flake *** method proves to be robust given the small flake-to-flake variation and the insensitivity to doping changes of *** also tested the method for Mose2,Ws2 and *** results provide a reference guide to identify the number of layers of this family of materials on transparent substrates only using optical microscopy.

Animals have evolved foraging strategies to acquire blends of nutrients that maximize fitness traits. In social insects, nu trie nt regulation is complicated by the fact that few in dividuals, the foragers, must address the diverge nt nutritional n eeds of all colony members simulta neously, includi ng other workers, the reproductives, and the brood. Here we used 3D nutritional geometry design to examine how bumblebee workers regulate their collection of 3 major macronutrients in the presence and absenee of brood. We provided small colonies artificial nectars (liquid diets) and pollens (solid diets) varying in their compositions of proteins, lipids, and carbohydrates during 2 weeks. Colo nies give n a choice betwee n nutrition ally complementary diets self-selected foods to reach a target ratio of 71% proteins, 6% carbohydrates, and 23% lipids, irrespective of the presenee of brood. Whe n con fined to a single nutrition ally imbalanced solid diet, colonies without brood regulated lipid collection and over-collected protein relative to this target ratio, whereas colonies with brood regulated both lipid and protein collection. This brood effect on the regulation of nutrient collection by workers suggests that protein levels are critical for larval development. Our results highlight the importa nee of con sidering bee nu trition as a multidimensi onal phe no men on to better assess the effects of environmental impoverishment and malnutrition on population declines.

Although the gas-phase production of nanostructured solids has already been carried out in industry for decades, only in recentyears has research interest in this topic begun to increase. Nevertheless, despite the remarkable scientific progress made recently, many long-established processes are still used in industry. scientific advancements can potentially lead to the improvement of existing industrial processes, but also to the development of completely new routes. This paper aims to review state-of-the-art synthesis and processing technologies, as well as the recent developments in academic research. Flame reactors that produce inorganic nanoparticles on industrial- and lab-scales are described, alongside a detailed overview of the different systems used for the production of carbon nanotubes and graphene. We discuss the problems of agglomeration and mixing of nanoparticles, which are strongly related to synthesis and processing. Finally, we focus on two promising processing techniques, namely nanoparticle fluidization and atomic layer deposition.

AtNfsl is the Arabidopsis thaliana mitochondrial homolog of the bacterial cysteine desulfurases Nifs and Iscs, having an essential role in cellular Fe-s cluster assembly. Homology modeling of AtNfslm predicts a high global similarity with E. coil Iscs showing a full conservation of residues involved in the catalytic site, whereas the chloroplastic AtNfs2 is more similar to the synechocystis sp. sufs. Pull-down assays showed that the recombinant mature form, AtNfslm, specifically binds to Arabidopsis frataxin （AtFH）. A hysteretic behavior, with a lag phase of several minutes, was observed and hysteretic parameters were affected by pre-incubation with AtFH. Moreover, AtFH modulates AtNfslm kinetics, increasing Vmax and decreasing the s0.5 value for cysteine. Results suggest that AtFH plays an important role in the early steps of Fe-s cluster formation by regulating AtNfsl activity in plant mitochondria.

The Cryptocephalus marginellus （Coleoptera： Chrysomelidae） complex is composed by six species that are supposed to have originated by events of allo- or parapatric speciation. In the present study we investigated the altemative hypotheses that the bacterial communities associated with six populations of this species complex are shaped by environmental factors, or reflect the proposed pattern of speciation. The microbiota associated with the six populations, from five species of the complex, have been characterized through 16s rRNA pyrotag sequencing. Based on a 97% sequence similarity threshold, data were clustered into 381 OTUs, which were analyzed using a variety of diversity indices. The microbiota of C. acquitanus and C. marginellus （Calanques） were the most diverse （over 100 OTUs）, while that from C. zoiai yielded less bacterial diversity （45 OTUs）. Taxonomic assignment revealed Proteobacteria, Tenericutes and Firmicutes as the dominant components of these beetles＇ microbiota. The most abtmdant genera were Ralstonia, sphingomonas, Rickettsia, and Pseudomonas. Different strains of Rickettsia were detected in C. eridani and C. renatae. The analysis of β-diversity revealed high OTU turnover among the populations of C. marginellus complex, with only few shared species. Hierarchical clustering taking into account relative abundances of OTUs does not match the phylogeny of the beetles, therefore we hypothesize that factors other than phylogenetic constraints play a role in shaping the insects＇ microbiota. Environmental factors that could potentially affect the composition of bacterial communities were tested by fitting them on the results of a multi-dimensional scaling analysis. No significant correlations were observed towards the geographic distances or the host plants, while the composition of the microbiota appeared associated with altitude.
