plants require a number of essential elements in different proportions for ensuring their growth and *** elemental concentrations in leaves reflect the functions and adaptations of plants under specific environmental ***,less is known about how the spectrum of leaf elements associated with resource acquisition,photosynthesis and growth regulates forest biomass along broad elevational *** examined the influence of leaf element distribution and diversity on forest biomass by analyzing ten elements(C,N,p,K,Ca,Mg,Zn,Fe,Cu,and Mn)in tree communities situated every 100 meters along an extensive elevation gradient,ranging from the tropical forest(80 meters above sea level)to the alpine treeline(4200 meters above sea level)in the Kangchenjunga Landscape in eastern Nepal *** calculated communityweighted averages(reflecting dominant traits governing biomass,i.e.,mass-ratio effect)and functional divergence(reflecting increased trait variety,i.e.,complementarity effect)for leaf elements in a total of 1,859 trees representing 116 *** increasing mass-ratio effect and decreasing complementarity in leaf elements enhance forest biomass accumulation.A combination of elements together with elevation explains biomass(52.2%of the variance)better than individual elemental trait diversity(0.05%to 21%of the variance).Elevation modulates trait diversity among plant species in biomass *** promotes biomass at lower elevations,but reduces biomass at higher elevations,demonstrating an interaction between elevation and *** interaction between elevation and mass-ratio effect produces heterogeneous effects on biomass along the elevation *** research indicates that biomass accumulation can be disproportionately affected by elevation due to interactions among trait diversities across vegetation *** higher trait variation enhances the adaptation of species to environmental changes,it reduces

Micropropagation of yellow mangosteen:a valuable endemic tree of India

We developed a method for in vitro regenera- tion of Garcinia xanthochymus （yellow mangosteen） from matured seed segments. Multiple shoots were induced on woody plant （Wp） medium supplemented with cytokinins. An average of 11 shoots per explant were regenerated from mature seed segments on Wp medium containing 20 μM 6-benzylaminopurine. Histological analysis revealed that hypodermal cells of seed segments were initially involved in active division, which later developed into meriste- moids, subsequently leading to the formation of shoot buds. shoot elongation was achieved by repeated subculturing of seed explants in shoot regeneration medium. Rooting of shoots was achieved on Wp medium supplemented with indole-3-butyric acid or s-naphthalene acetic acid. plant- lets were transplanted to pots containing soil： compost （1：1） and survival rate was 90 %.

植物需要多种基本元素调节并保持其特定比例以维持生长发育,叶片元素含量反映了植物的功能及其对环境的适应性.然而,在森林海拔梯度上,我们对于资源获取、光合作用和生长相关的叶片元素如何调节森林生物量仍知之甚少.本研究在喜马拉雅山干城章嘉峰地区沿热带森林(海拔80m)至高山树线(海拔4200m)设置海拔梯度样带,每间隔海拔100m设置一个样点,对116个树种的1859个个体测定了叶片中10种元素(C、N、p、K、Ca、Mg、Zn、Fe、Cu和Mn)的含量,通过计算叶片元素含量的群落加权平均值(反映优势物种的性状优势度,表征质量比效应)和功能离散度(反映物种在生态位空间内的聚集或者离散程度,表征互补效应),探究叶片元素含量及其离散程度沿海拔梯度分异特征,解析其对森林群落生物量的影响.研究结果表明,较强的叶片元素质量比效应和较弱的互补效应有利于森林群落生物量的积累.叶片元素性状多样性与海拔的共同作用对生物量的解释量(解释方差:52.2%)高于元素性状多样性的解释量(解释方差:0.05%~21%).海拔调节了树种性状多样性在生物量积累中的作用,互补效应在低海拔和高海拔地区对生物量的影响分别体现为积极和消极作用,这表明海拔和互补效应之间也存在交互作用.此外,海拔和质量比效应的交互作用对海拔梯度上生物量的影响也存在异质性.本研究表明,不同森林群落生物量的积累可能受到由海拔调控的性状多样性的影响.尽管较高的性状分异不利于生物量的积累,但能增强高海拔地区树种对胁迫环境的适应性.

subcutaneous and breast metastasis from asymptomatic gallbladder carcinoma

BACKGROUND:Though gallbladder carcinoma is asso- ciated with early lymphatic and hematogenous spread, the only common extra-abdominal site of metastasis is *** carcinoma metastasizing to breast and subcutaneous tissue is not known. METHOD:This report describes an interesting and unusual case of asymptomatic gallbladder carcinoma presenting with subcutaneous and breast metastasis. REsULTs:A 42-year-old woman presented with multiple subcutaneous nodules over the abdominal wall,anterior chest wall,back and in bilateral *** needle aspiration cytology(FNAC)of these nodules revealed metastatic *** patient was investigated for a primary *** ultrasound of the abdomen followed by a contrast-enhanced CT scan showed a growth in gallbladder,infiltrating the liver with multiple hepatic ***-guided FNAC from the growth in the gallbladder revealed *** was diagnosed as a case of metastatic adenocarcinoma of the gallbladder and palliative combination chemotherapy with gemcitabine and carboplatin was *** she developed jaundice and deteriorated dramatically in a short span of *** specific therapy could be started and she was given supportive *** died within three weeks of diagnosis due to hepatic encephalopathy. CONCLUsIONs:This report highlights an unusual metastasis of gallbladder carcinoma to the breast and subcutaneous tissue presenting as multiple lesions,which has never been reported in the English *** were unknown sites of metastasis for carcinoma of the ***,bilateral multiple metastatic lesions to breast are also very rare.

prognostic factors for progression of liver structural lesions in chronic hepatitis C patients

AIM: To evaluate the epidemiological, clinical, laboratory and histological variables capable of predicting the progression of hepatic structural disturbances in chronic hepatitis C patients during the time interval between two liver biopsies. METHODs: Clinical charts of 112 chronic hepatitis C patients were retrospectively analyzed, whereas liver biopsies were revised. Immunohistochemical detection of interferon receptor was based on the Envision-peroxidase system. REsULTs: In the multivariate analysis, the variables in the age at first biopsy, ALT levels, presence of lymphoid aggregates and siderosis were the determinants of the best model for predicting the severity of the disease. The direct progression rate of hepatic structural lesions was significantly higher in untreated patients, intermediate in treated non-responders and lower in treated responders to antiviral therapy (non-treated vs responders, 0.22 ± 0.50 vs -0.15 ± 0.46, p = 0.0053). Immuno-expression of interferon receptor is not a relevant factor. CONCLUsION: The best predictors of the progression of fibrosis are age at the first liver biopsy, extent of ALT elevation, inflammation at liver histology and hepatic siderosis. Antiviral treatment is effective in preventing the progression of liver structural lesions in chronic hepatitis C patients.

In recent years,hard carbon materials have gained significant interest as anode materials for Na-ion *** waste is considered one of the most interesting,renewable,available,and cost-effective precursor to obtain hard carbon(HC);however,HC properties must be finely tuned to achieve performance comparable to those provided by Li-ion *** this work,three biomass wastes(coconut shells,walnut shells,and corn silk) were evaluated as potential precursors for HC preparation involving a pyrolysis process and subsequent acid washing to remove the inorganic *** obtained materials exhibited low and similar specific surface areas(presented different structures and surface *** walnut shell HC possessed a lower amount of inorganic impurities and oxygen-based functional groups compared to the coconut shell and corn silk HCs,leading to higher initial coulombic efficiency(iCE).The structural organization was higher in the case of the walnut shell HC,while the corn silk HC revealed a heterogeneous structure combining both highly disordered carbon and localized graphitized *** HCs delivered high initial reversible capacities between 293 and 315 mAh g^(-1) at 50 mA g^(-1) current rate,which remained rather stable during long-term *** best capacity(293 mAh g^(-1) after 100 charge/discharge cycles) and highest capacity retention(93%) was achieved in walnut HCs in half-cells,which could be associated with its higher sp2 C content,better organized structure,and fewer *** "adsorption-insertion" Na storage mechanism is suggested based on several *** walnut HCs exhibited an attractive energy density of 279 Wh/kg when tested in full cells.

Cue hierarchy in the foraging behaviour of the brackish cladoceran Daphniopsis australis

Zooplankton communities are an essential component of marine and freshwater food webs. However, there is still a relative lack of information on how these organisms behaviourally respond to a range of abiotic and biotic stressors. specifically, the behaviour of the cladoceran D aphniopsis australis, a species endemic to south-eastern Australian saline lakes and ponds, is still unknown despite its potential role in the structure and function of inland water ecosystems. The swimming behaviour of males, parthenogenetic females and epiphial females was investigated under various conditions and combinations of food and conspecific cues. In the absence of cues, males displayed the most extensive swimming behaviour, exploring all areas of the container, and swimming in a series of relatively straight trajectories. In contrast, females typically exhibited a hop-and-sink motion characterised by the alternation between short bursts of swimming and sinking phases. Both females spent long periods near the bottom of the container, but epiphial females appeared to be more active than parthenogenetic ones that rarely made an excursion in the water column. In the presence of cues, males and females showed abilities to detect infochemicals from food and conspecifics, but exhibited specific behavioural strategies. Males essentially increased their swimming speed in the presence of food and/or conspecific infochemicals, and this increase was independent on the source of the cues, i.e. food, conspecific or a mixture of food and conspecifics. In contrast, females exhibited cue hierarchies that were related to their sexual status. parthenogenetic females swam faster in the presence of food and a mixture of food and conspecific infochemicals than in the presence of cue from the opposite sex, which did not significantly differ from control observations conducted in the absence of cues. As an increasing proportion of surgeons mount their learning curves in laparoscopic liver resections,a larger percentage of liver surgery is being performed laparoscopically(1).syn et al.(2)published an impressive statistical analysis of existing randomized controlled trials(RCT)and propensity-score matched(psM)studies that model a long-term survival benefit in favor of laparoscopic over open resection for colorectal liver metastases(CRLM).Whilst this is an encouraging outcome,it is critical to analyze the studies included that led to these improved survival outcomes.
