Determination of Timer Error and Evaluation of Its Effect on Dose for oB6, GammaBeam X200 and X-Ray Irradiators at the secondary standard Dosimetry Laboratory in Nigeria

Timer error as well as its convention is very important for dose accuracy during irradiation. This paper determines the timer error of irradiators at secondary standard Dosimetry Laboratory (ssDL) in Nigeria. The irradiators are Cs-137 oB6 irradiator and X-ray irradiators at the Protection level ssDL;and Co-60 irradiator at the Therapy Level ssDL. PTW UNIDos electrometer and Ls01 Ionization chamber were used at the Protection Level to obtain doses for both Cs-137 oB6 and X-ray irradiators while an IBA farmer type ionization chamber and an IBA DosE 1 electrometer were used at the Protection Level ssDL. single/multiple exposure method and graphical method were used in the determination of the timer error for the three irradiators. The timer error obtained for Cs-137 oB6 irradiator was 0.48 ± 0.01 s, the timer error for the X-ray irradiator was 0.09 ± 0.01 s while the timer error obtained for GammaBeam X200 was 1.21 ± 0.04 s. It was observed that the timer error is not affected by source to detector distance. It was also observed that the timer error of Co-60 Gamma X200 irradiator is increasing with the age of the machine. source to detector distance and field size do not contribute towards the timer error of the irradiators. The timer error of the Co-60 Gamma X200 irradiator (the only irradiator among the irradiators with a pneumatic system) increases with the age of the irradiator.

Physical activity(PA)has strong relevance for limiting the harms to human health and well-being due to the coronavirus disease-2019(CoVID-19)pandemic.1 Active muscles produce chemicals that improve immune functioning,which in turn reduces the extent of infections,and decreases inflammation,and these are the main causes of the lung damage from severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(sARs-CoV-2)*** is a powerful preventive and therapeutic intervention for the most common pre-existing chronic conditions that increase risk of severe CoVID-19 infections and mortality.

Background： sheep is important in the socio-economic lives of people around the world. It is estimated that more than half of our once common livestock breeds are now endangered. since genetic characterization of Nigerian sheep is still lacking, we analyzed ten morphological traits on 402 animals and 15 microsatellite DNA markers in 384 animals of the 4 Nigerian sheep breeds to better understand genetic diversity for breeding management and germplasm conservation. Results： Morphological traits of Uda and Balami were significantly （P 〈 0.05） higher than Yankasa, which were both higher than West African Dwarf （WAD） sheep. stepwise discriminant analysis showed tail length, rump height, chest girth, ear length and chest depth as the most discriminating variables for classification. Mahalanobis distances show the least differentiation between Uda and Balami and the largest between WAD and Balami sheep. While 93.3% of WAD sheep were correctly assigned to their source genetic group, 63.9% of Yankasa, 61.2% of Balami and 45.2% of Uda were classified correctly by nearest neighbour discriminant analysis. The overall high Polymorphism Information Content （PIC） of all microsatellite markers ranged from 0.751 to 0.927 supporting their use in genetic characterization. Expected heterozygosity was high for all loci （0.783 to 0.93）. Mean heterozygote deficiency across all populations （0.17] to 0.534） possibly indicate significant inbreeding （P 〈 0.05）. Mean values for FsT, FIT and F^s statistics across all loci were 0.088, 0.394 and 0.336 respectively. Yankasa and Balami are the most closely related breeds （DA = 0.184） while WAD and Balami are the farthest apart breeds （DA-- 0.665）, which is coincident with distance based on morphological analysis and population structure assessed by sTRUCTURE. Conclusions： These results suggest that within-breed genetic variation in Nigerian sheep is higher than between-breeds and may be a valuable tool for genetic improvement and conservation. The

Histomorphometry of the Testes, Epididymides, and spermatozoa of Four Indigenous Breeds of Bulls in Ibadan, Nigeria

Forty testicles were used to carry out histomorphometry study on the testes, epididymides and spermatozoa of four indigenous breeds of bull found in Ibadan (Red Bororo (RB), sokoto Gudali (sG), White Fulani (WF) and Dhali (DL)). The testicles were harvested immediately after the slaughter at the Bodija abattoir and transported to the laboratory in an insulated flask containing warm water at 37°C within 30 minutes. In the laboratory, the samples were dissected and histological sections of the right testis, right and left caudal epididymides taken from two bulls in each group. The tissues were fixed in Bouin’s fluid. They were processed in an automatic tissue processor, embedded in paraffin wax using the embedding system (Leica EG 1160) and sectioned with microtome at 4 microns. The sections were then stained by Haematoxylin and Eosin method and mounted and examined under a microscope. There was no significant difference between breed and seminiferous tubular diameter (sTD) and testicular germinal height (TGEH). The mean sTD ranged from 223.00 ± 28.35 to 316.00 ± 37.70 μm, while the TGEH ranged from 81.60 ± 10.05 to 89.80 ± 4.83 μm. The mean epididymal tubular diameters (ETD) and epididymal lumen diameters (ELD) had the highest value of 378.00 ± 10.95 and 298.20 ± 26.0489 μm in DL and lowest of 373.80 ± 37.70 and 278.10 ± 27.71 μm in RB, respectively. The mean epididymal germinal epithelia heights (EGEH) were highest (61.20 ± 5.70 μm) in WF and lowest (39.80 ± 0.86 μm) in RB. The mean sperm head length (sHL), sperm midpiece length (sMPL), sperm tail length (sTL) and sperm total length (TL) had the highest values of 5.90 ± 0.10, 8.80 ± 0.25, 24.20 ± 2.59 and 38.90 ± 2.94 μm, respectively in sG. sHL and sMPL were lowest in DL bulls (5.00 ± 0.00 and 6.30 ± 0.20

Poly(D,L-lactic-co-glycolic acid)-based artesunate nanoparticles:formulation,antimalarial and toxicity assessments

objective： The aim of this study was to formulate polymer-based artesunate nanoparticles for malaria treatment. Methods： Artesunate was loaded with poly（D,L-lactic-co-glycolic acid）（PLGA） by solvent evaporation from an oil-in-water single emulsion. Nanoparticles were characterized by X-ray diffraction and differential scanning calo- rimetry analyses. In vivo antimalarial studies at 4 mg/kg were performed on swiss male albino mice infected with Plasmodium berghei. Hematological and hepatic toxicity assays were performed. In vitro cytotoxicity of free and en- capsulated artesunate （Art-PLGA） to cell line RAW 264.7 was determined at concentrations of 7.8-1000 pg/ml. Re- sults： The particle size of the formulated drug was （329.3±21.7） nm and the entrapment efficiency was （38.4±10.1）%. Art-PLGA nanoparticles showed higher parasite suppression （62.6%） compared to free artesunate （58.2%, P〈0.05）. Platelet counts were significantly higher in controls （305 000.00±148 492.40） than in mice treated with free artesunate （139 500.00±20 506.10） or Art-PLGA （163 500.00±3535.53）（P〈0.05）. There was no sign of hepatic toxicity following use of the tested drugs. The half maximal inhibitory concentration （IC50） of Art-PLGA （468.0 pg/ml） was significantly higher （P〈0.05） than that of free artesunate （7.3 pg/ml） in the in vitro cytotoxicity assay. Conclusions： A simple treatment of PLGA-entrapped artesunate nanoparticles with dual advantages of low toxicity and better antiplasmodial efficacy has been developed.
