How Can Practitioners support Citizen Volunteers in Disaster Risk Reduction? Insight from “Good and Ready” in Aotearoa New Zealand

Global and national policy frameworks emphasize the importance of people's participation and volunteers' role in disaster risk reduction. While research has extensively focused on volunteers in disaster response and recovery, less attention has been paid on how organizations involved in disaster risk management can support volunteers in leading and coordinating communitybased disaster risk reduction. In 2019, the New Zealand Red Cross piloted the Good and Ready initiative in Auckland,Aotearoa New Zealand, with the objective to empower local people in resilience building with a focus on volunteers and community participation. This research examined the positive and negative outcomes of Good and Ready and investigated volunteers' experiences in the disaster resilience initiative. It involved the codesign of a questionnaire-based survey using participatory methods with Good and Ready volunteers, the dissemination of the survey to gather volunteers' viewpoints, and a focus group discussion with participatory activities with Red Cross volunteers. The findings highlight that a key challenge lies in finding a balance between a program that provides flexibility to address contextual issues and fosters communities' ownership, versus a prescriptive and standardized approach that leaves little room for creativity and self-initiative. It pinpoints that supporting volunteers with technical training is critical but that soft skills training such as coordinating, communicating,or facilitating activities at the local level are needed. It concludes that the sustainability of Good and Ready requires understanding and meeting volunteers' motivations and expectations and that enhancing partnerships with local emergency management agencies would strengthen the program.

spinal cord injury(sCI)is a devastating and disabling medical condition generally caused by a traumatic event(primary injury).This initial trauma is accompanied by a set of biological mechanisms directed to ameliorate neural damage but also exacerbate initial damage(secondary injury).The alterations that occur in the spinal cord have not only local but also systemic consequences and virtually all organs and tissues of the body incur important changes after sCI,explaining the progression and detrimental consequences related to this ***(PNIE)is a growing area of research aiming to integrate and explore the interactions among the different systems that compose the human organism,considering the mind and the body as a *** initial traumatic event and the consequent neurological disruption trigger immune,endocrine,and multisystem dysfunction,which in turn affect the patient's psyche and *** the present review,we will explore the most important local and systemic consequences of sCI from a PNIE perspective,defining the changes occurring in each system and how all these mechanisms are ***,potential clinical approaches derived from this knowledge will also be collectively presented with the aim to develop integrative therapies to maximize the clinical management of these patients.

Estimation of Peanut Maturity Using Color Image Analysis

Peanuts pods grow underground and mature unevenly, resulting that choosing the correct time to harvest is more complicated than other crops. Pod maturity can be determined by blasting with a pressure washer to remove outer skin of the pod (exocarp) to expose the color of the middle layer (mesocarp). The mesocarp color changes with maturity from white to yellow, orange, brown and finally black. The sum of percentage from orange, brown, and black mesocarp (OBB) color and black color (BL) represents the kernels that are mature enough to harvest. The goal of this research is to identify methodologies to estimate OBB and BL of the pods using RGB images taken in the field and validate the proposed model using other pod images. The Mahalanobis distance classification method was used to process sets of images and calculate pod area (number of pixels) corresponding to two classes (mesocarp and background) with nine different color groups. The results showed a performance of 94% effectiveness for mesocarp using Mahalanobis distance classification. statistical regression for OBB and BL was developed based on 315 images of peanut pods taken from the field. The R2 and root mean square error of predicted and actual OBB were 0.93 and 4.1%, respectively. The R2 and root mean square error of predicted and actual BL were 0.88 and 1.8%, respectively. The validation of OBB using other images provided reasonable estimation (R2 = 0.98 and RMsE = 2.73%). This study introduces a novel, cost-effective, and non-destructive method for estimating peanut maturity using RGB imagery and Mahalanobis distance classification in the field. This innovative approach addresses the limitations of traditional methods and offers a robust alternative for real-time maturity assessment.

soil nutrient depletion as a result of continuous cultivation with insufficient external nutrient replenishment is a major challenge in sub-saharan Africa (ssA). A trial using the organic and mineral fertilizer was established in the cassava cropping system of the Pissa and Damara areas to address the declining soil fertility. The study aimed to evaluate the effect of cow manure and mineral fertilizer in combination or sole application on soil physico-chemical properties and macronutrients. The experimental trial adopted a randomized complete block design (RCBD) replicated four times. The treatments comprised of;T1 (Control), T2 (Peasant practice), T3 (sole NPK), and T4 (Cow manure + NPK). The data on soil physicochemical analysis was subjected to a one-way analysis of variance in sAs 9.4 and the mean was separated by Tukey’s HsD test at p soil pH values ranged from 4.20 to 4.91;and 4.53 to 5.28 in Pissa and Damara respectively. According to the treatments, a low pH value is observed in T3 (4.13) in the Pissa. Combined use of cow manure and the mineral fertilizer resulted in higher Mg K and N in the Pissa region and higher soil pH in Damara. The use of sole NPK (T3) gave a higher soil carbon and CN ratio. In the Pissa region the CEC, Cu, Fe, and Zn were higher in the treatments with mineral fertilizer compared to the control. Conclusively, the use of mineral fertilizer and cow manure can be used with optimum rates to improve soil physico-chemical properties on a sustainable basis.

Characterization of sediment from Ourokessoum, North Cameroon: Morphostructural, Mineralogical, and Physicochemical Properties

The present study examines the morphological, physicochemical, and mineralogical specificity of clay sediments in the Hamakoussou Basin with the objective of exploring their potential applications. Field data collection was followed by a series of physicochemical and mineralogical tests on the clay samples. Results show that the clay layers, which range in thickness from 11 - 120 cm, exhibit gray, yellowish, or greenish colors. From a physicochemical perspective, these clay layers are found to be basic with a pH ranging from 8.5 for the higher Hama2 layer to 7.6 for the lower Hama1 layer. The sum of exchangeable bases (s) is medium to high with higher values in the Hama1 layer (53.45 meq/100g) and lower values in the Hama3 layer (17.09 meq/100g). similarly, the cation exchange capacity (CEC) varies from 62.32 meq/100g for the higher Hama1N4 clay layer to 35.6 meq/100g for the lower Hama1N3 clay layer. Mineralogically, the clay materials are primarily composed of smectites, with illite, kaolinite, calcite, quartz, feldspar, hematite, and goethite also present. This study emphasizes the versatility of clay in various industries and scientific domains. It is known for its impermeability, plasticity, and fossil-preserving capabilities, making it a valuable material for economic, practical, and academic applications.

背景中国全科医生越来越期望能够识别和预防抑郁障碍,但其接受的心理健康培训有限,社区卫生服务中心(CHCs)也缺乏针对抑郁障碍的诊断和服务规范。WHO《心理健康差距干预指南》第2版(mhGAP-IG.v2)是为非心理健康专业人员提供的决策支持工具,可用于评估、管理、随访精神障碍、神经疾病及物质使用障碍患者。鉴于mhGAP-IG.v2的通用性,其在中国的应用应根据抑郁障碍在不同文化下的差异性和中国心理健康系统特点进行调整。方法开展两轮基于网络的德尔菲(Delphi)调查。邀请来自深圳市的全科医生小组对mhGAP-IG.v2中涉及抑郁障碍的199条表述进行五分制的赞同程度打分,即“如要把该表述用在深圳市,是否赞同调整其内容和结构”。如果>80%的全科医生“有些/肯定赞同”调整某表述,则视为全科医生对调整该表述达成共识;如果>80%的全科医生“有些/肯定不赞同”调整某表述,则视为全科医生对不调整该表述达成共识。结果全科医生对79%的表述达成了需要调整的共识,平均得分为4.26分,即全科医生“有些赞同”对mh GAP-IG.v2中涉及抑郁障碍的相关表述进行调整。具体调整建议包括:抑郁评估方法应考虑更广泛的抑郁症状,并考虑病情的发展阶段;增加抑郁筛查工具的使用指南;明确全科医生的作用,以及家庭参与和跨部门服务的转诊途径;药物治疗建议应与中国用药规范保持一致;指南所有章节要强调预防自杀;情境化健康教育;强调“以人为本”的服务方法。全科医生认为,应维持mhGAP-IG.v2中对经历抑郁发作的双相障碍患者的诊断和治疗建议。结论对mhGAP-IG.v2抑郁部分的调整研究反映出对指南的评估应考虑文化和国情背景,包括中国特色的初级卫生保健系统、健康优先领域、治疗可得性,以及多样化的社会心理教育需要。调整后的mhGAP-IG.v2可以给中国全科医学教育和全科医疗服务提供参考,也可以为其他国家的非精神病学专业人员开展心理健康服务提供有益借鉴。

Physicochemical characterization of forest and sugarcane leaf combustion’s particulate matters using electron microscopy,EDs,XRD and TGA

Physical characteristics and quantitative elemental composition of PM and residual ash produced from sugarcane leaves(sCL)combustion were investigated using TEM-EDs compared with forest leaves(FRL).sEM-EDs was used to analyze the microstructure and chemical composition of biomass raw leaves and *** analysis was also performed to investigate the characterization of the crystalline nanostructure,structure of PM,and residual ash compared to the TEM image processing *** oxidation kinetics of biomass raw materials,PM,and residual ash were investigated by *** morphology of fine and ultrafine agglomerate structure of sCL soot and residual ash are not significantly different from the FRL soot and residual *** average diameter sizes of single primary nanoparticles of sCL and FRL soot are approximately 37 nm and 35 nm,while the sizes of residual ash are about 18 nm and 22 nm,*** single primary nanoparticles of soot are mainly composed of curve line crystallites of carbon fringes,while residual ash is composed of straightline lattice *** average fringe lengths of sCL and FRL soot are about 1.25 nm and 1.04 nm from the outer shell and 0.89 nm and 0.74 nm from the inner *** interlayer spacing of curve line carbon fringes of sCL and FRL soot is approximately 0.359 nm and 0.362 nm by the TEM image analysis and it was matched with XRD *** biomass PMs are mainly composed of soot,si,Ca,and K compounds:siO_(2),CaCO3,and KCl.
