Temperature-dependent aggregation of bio-surfactants in aqueous solutions of galactose and lactose:Volumetric and viscometric approach

Modulation in the aggregation behavior of bio-surfactants(bile salts), sodium cholate(NaC) and sodium deoxycholate(NaDC) in aqueous solutions of carbohydrates(galactose and lactose) have been investigated by measuring the density(ρ), speed of sound(u) and viscosity(η) of the mixtures at different temperatures293.15, 298.15, 303.15, 308.15 and 313.15 K. The density and speed of sound data have been used to calculate various volumetric and compressibility parameters such as apparent molar volume(V_φ), isentropic compressibility(κ_s), apparent molar adiabatic compression(κ_(s, φ)) to get a better insight into the micellization mechanism of bile salts. Further, the viscosity data have been studied in the light of relative viscosity(η_r) and viscous relaxation time(τ). some derived parameters such as free volume(V_f), internal pressure(πi) and molar cohesive energy(MCE) of Na C and Na DC in aqueous solution of saccharides have also been calculated from viscosity data in conjunction with density and speed of sound values. All the calculated and derived parameters provide qualitative information regarding the nature of interactions i.e. solute–solute, solute–solvent and solvent–solvent in the solution.

Accurate prediction of the solids friction factor through horizontal straight pipes is important for the reliable design of a pneumatic conveying system, but it is a challenging assignment to date because of the highly concentrated, turbulent, and complex nature of the gas-solids mixture. Power-station fly ash was transported through different pipeline configurations. Numerical simulation of the dense-phase pneumatic conveying systems for three different solids and two different air flow rates have shown that particle and actual gas velocities and the ratio of the two velocities increases in the flow direction, whereas the reverse trend was found to occur for the solids volumetric concentration. To develop a solids friction-factor model suitable for dense-phase flow, we modified an existing pure dilute-phase model by incorporating sub-models for particle and actual gas velocities and impact and solids friction factor. The solids friction-factor model was validated by using it for scale-up predictions for total pipeline pressure drops in longer and larger pipes and by comparing experimental and predicted pneumatic conveying characteristics for different solids flow rates. The accuracy of the prediction was compared with a recently developed two-layer-based model. We discussed the effect of incorporating the particle and actual gas velocity terms in the solids friction-factor model instead of superficial air velocity.

Background Pediatric surgical practice lags behind medicine in presence and use of evidence,primarily due to time constraints of using existing tools that are not specific to pediatric surgery,lack of sufficient patient data and unstructured pediatric surgery training *** We developed,disseminated and tested the effectiveness of an evidence-based resource for pediatric surgeons and researchers that provides brief,informative summaries of quality-assessed systematic reviews and meta-analyses on conflicting pediatric surgery *** Responses of 91 actively practicing surgeons who used the resource were *** majority of participants found the resource useful(75%),improved their patient care(66.6%),and more than half(54.2%)found it useful in identifying research *** all participants reported that the resource could be used as a teaching tool(93%).Conclusion Lack of awareness of the resource is the primary barrier to its routine use,leading to potential calls for more active dissemination *** of the Canadian Association of Paediatric surgeons Evidence-Based Resource find that the summaries are useful,identify research gaps,help mitigate multiple barriers to evidence-based medicine,and may improve patient care.
