Perfluoroalkyl acid transformation and mitigation by nNiFe-activated carbon nanocomposites in steady-state flow column studies

The ongoing contamination of groundwater with per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances(PFAs)has resulted in a global and rapidly growing interest in PFAs groundwater *** technologies that lead to PFAs destruction are often limited by not addressing all PFAs,being energy-intensive or not being suited for in-situ *** developed nNiFeactivated carbon(AC)nanocomposites and demonstrated varying degrees of PFAs reduction and fluoride generation with these nanocomposites in batch reactors for several *** we explore nNiFe-AC’s effectiveness to transform perfluoroalkyl acid acids(PFAAs)under steady-state flow(0.0044 to 0.15 mL/min)in nNiFe-AC:sand packed *** experiments included,two perfluorooctane sulfonate(PFOs)in deionized water and two PFAA mixtures in deionized water or bicarbonate buffer containing five perfluoroalkyl carboxylates(PFCAs,C5-C9)and three perfluoroalkyl sulfonates(PFsAs,C4,C6 and C8)at temperatures of 50 or 60℃ were *** transformation was similar in PFOs-only and PFAA mixture column ***,%PFAA transformation under flow conditions exceeded what we observed previously in batch reactors with up to 53%transformation of a PFAA mixture with∼8%*** chain PFAs dominated the PFAAs transformed and a bicarbonate matrix appeared to reduce overall *** breakthrough was slower than predicted from only sorption due to transformation;some longer chain PFAs like PFOs did not ***,nNiFe-AC technology with both in-situ and ex-situ potential application was shown to be a plausible part of a treatment train needed to address the ongoing challenge for cleaning up PFAs-contaminated waters.

Lighting quality and acoustic quality are often not well addressed in the current green building practice,including the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design(leeD)Green Building Rating system in the *** the level of leeD certification indicates the level of sustainability,it is not clear if a higher level of leeD certification also implies a more comfortable and productive work *** study intended to find the relationship between the level of leeD certification and the level of worker satisfaction and perceived job performance regarding lighting quality and acoustic quality from fifteen leeD-certified *** findings indicate that the leeD Platinum building group tended to provide better lighting quality than the other lower certification groups,while the leeD Gold building group showed lower lighting quality and acoustic quality than the rest of the *** designers and organizations should be mindful of the importance of lighting and acoustic qualities in promoting better comfort and productivity as it is easy to overlook these criteria when complying with leeD IEQ guidelines.

Potential annual daylighting performance of a high-efficiency daylight redirecting slat system

While the primary role of window attachments is often to moderate glare and solar heat gains,they are also able to provide additional daylight to interior *** this purpose,a variety of daylight-redirecting window systems have been developed over the past 150 *** reflective systems(slats/light shelves)or prismatic systems that rely on total internal reflection work well under specific solar conditions,but generally sacrifice performance over a much wider range of incident solar angles and sky *** systems-typically reflective slats-are more responsive to sun angles but have not been able to achieve optimal performance for glare and daylight redirection efficiency.A previous investigation into an adjustable,reflective blind concept first conceived of in the late 1970s showed promise but was not reduced to practice due to lack of adequate simulation and analysis *** this paper,this concept is further developed and its energy and visual comfort performance evaluated for four mid-latitude,temperate climates using ray-tracing simulation *** indicate significant potential lighting energy savings when compared with conventional automated reflective blinds(2.1-4.9 kWh/(m^(2)·a),or 14%-42%,depending on climate and orientation)or,especially,manually-operated matte white Venetian blinds(1.4-7.9 kWh/(m^(2)·a),or 9%-54%,depending on climate and orientation),while maintaining acceptable or better visual comfort conditions throughout the interior space.

Mathematical modeling and simulations of stress mitigation by coating polycrystalline particles in lithium-ion batteries

A chemo-mechanical model is developed to investigate the effects on the stress development of the coating of polycrystalline Ni-rich LiNixMnyCo_(z)O_(2)(x≥0.8)(NMC)particles with poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)(PEDOT).The simulation results show that the coating of primary NMC particles significantly reduces the stress generation by efficiently accommodating the volume change associated with the lithium diffusion,and the coating layer plays roles both as a cushion against the volume change and a channel for the lithium transport,promoting the lithium distribution across the secondary particles more ***,the lower stiffness,higher ionic conductivity,and larger thickness of the coating layer improve the stress *** paper provides a mathematical framework for calculating the chemo-mechanical responses of anisotropic electrode materials and fundamental insights into how the coating of NMC active particles mitigates stress levels.

A case study on multi-lane roundabouts under congestion:Comparing software capacity and delay estimates with field data

Existing studies on modern roundabouts performance are mostly based on data fron： singe lane roundabouts that are not heavily congested. For planners and designers interested in building multilane roundabouts for intersections with potential growth i~ future traffic, there has been a lack of existing studies with field data that provide reference values in terms of capacity and delay measurements. With the intent of providing such reference values, a case study was conducted by using the East DowlinC Road Roundabouts in Anchorage, Alaska, which are currently operating with extensive queues during the evening peak hours. This research used multiple video camcorders t（ capture vehicle turning movements at the roundabouts as well as the progressior~ of vehicle queues at the roundabout entrance approaches. With these video records, the number of vehicles in the queues can be accurately counted in any single minute during the peak hours. This study shows that unbalanced entrance flow patterns （i.e., ~ne entrance has significant higher flow than others） can intensify the queue and delay fo., the overall roundabouts. Then various software packages including RODEL, sIDRA and VIssIM were used to estimate several performance measurements, such as capacity. queue length, and delay, compared with the collected field data. With the comparison, it is found that all the three software packages overestimate multi-lane roundabout ca pacity before calibration. With default parameters, sIDRA and VIssIM tend to underes timate delays and queue lengths for the multi-lane roundabouts under congestion, while RODEL results in higher delay and queue length estimations at most of the entrance approaches.

Multiplexed electrospraying of water in cone-jet mode using a UV-embossed pyramidal micronozzle film

The electrospraying of water in the cone-jet mode is difficult in practical applications owing to its low throughput and the electrical discharge caused by the high surface tension of water.A film with multiple dielectric micronozzles is essential for multiplexed electrospraying of water in cone-jet mode without electrical ***,a pyramidal micronozzle film with five nozzles was fabricated using the UV-embossing *** pyramidal micronozzle film consisted of pyramidal micronozzles,a micropillar array,and an in-plane extractor,which were proposed to minimize wetting and concentrate the electric field to the water meniscus at the tip of the pyramidal *** electrospraying of water using a single pyramidal micronozzle was visualized by a high-speed camera at a flow rate of 0.15–0.50ml/h with voltages of 0.0–2.3 kV,−1.6 kV,and−4.0 kV at the water,guide ring,and collector,*** distinct modes,the dripping,spindle,and cone-jet modes,were observed and distinguished according to the motion of the water meniscus at the nozzle *** steady Taylor cone and jet were observed in a voltage range of 1.3–2.0 kV in water,particularly in cone-jet *** electrospraying of water in cone-jet mode at a flow rate of 1.5ml/h was performed using a pyramidal micronozzle film,demonstrating the potential for a high-throughput electrospraying system.

Background:Accumulatingα-synuclein(α-syn)aggregates in neurons and glial cells are the staples of many synucleinopathy disorders,such as Parkinson’s disease(PD).since brain adenosine becomes greatly elevated in ageing brains and chronic adenosine A1 receptor(A1R)stimulation leads to neurodegeneration,we determined whether adenosine or A1R receptor ligands mimic the action of known compounds that promoteα-syn aggregation(e.g.,the amphetamine analogue 2-aminoindan)or inhibitα-syn aggregation(e.g.,Rasagiline metabolite 1-aminoindan).In the present study,we determined whether adenosine,A1R receptor agonist N^(6)-Cyclopentyladenosine(CPA)and antago-nist 8-cyclopentyl-1,3-dipropylxanthine(DPCPX)could directly interact withα-syn to modulateα-syn aggregation and neurodegeneration of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra(sN).Methods:Nanopore analysis and molecular docking were used to test the binding properties of CPA and DPCPX withα-syn in ***-Dawley rats were administered with 7-day intraperitoneal injections of the A1R ligands and 1-and 2-aminoindan,and levels ofα-syn aggregation and neurodegeneration were examined in the sN pars compacta and hippocampal regions using confocal imaging and Western ***:Using nanopore analysis,we showed that the A1R agonists(CPA and adenosine)interacted with the N-terminus ofα-syn,similar to 2-aminoindan,which is expected to promote a“knot”conformation andα-syn *** contrast,the A1R antagonist DPCPX interacted with the N-and C-termini ofα-syn,similar to 1-aminoindan,which is expected to promote a“loop”conformation that preventsα-syn *** docking studies revealed that adenosine,CPA and 2-aminoindan interacted with the hydrophobic core ofα-syn N-terminus,whereas DPCPX and 1-aminoindan showed direct binding to the N-and C-terminal hydrophobic *** imaging and Western blot analyses revealed that chronic treatments with CPA alone or in combination with 2-aminoindan increasedα-syn

The effect of acute aerobic exercise on central arterial stiffness,wave reflections,and hemodynamics in adults with diabetes:A randomized cross-over design

Background:Individuals with diabetes have greater central arterial stiffness,wave reflections,and hemodynamics,all of which promote the accelerated cardiovascular pathology seen in this *** aerobic exercise has been shown to be an effective strategy for reducing central arterial stiffness,wave reflections,and hemodynamics in healthy individuals;however,the effects of acute aerobic exercise in reducing these outcomes is not well established in people with ***,implementation of high-intensity interval exercise(HIIE)has shown superior improvements in cardiovascular health outcomes when compared to traditional aerobic ***,the effect of HIIE on the aforementioned outcomes in people with diabetes is not *** purpose of this study was to(i)describe the central arterial stiffness,wave reflections,and hemodynamic responses to a bout of HIIE and moderate-intensity continuous exercise(MICE)in adults with diabetes;and(ii)compare the effects of HIIE and MICE on the aforementioned ***:A total of 24 adult men and women(aged 29-59 years old)with type 1(n=12)and type 2(n=12)diabetes participated in a randomized cross-over *** participants completed the following protocols:(i)HIIE:cycling for 4×4 min at 85%-95%of heart rate peak(HR_(peak)),interspersed with 3 min of active recovery at 60%-70%HR_(peak);(ii)MICE:33 min of continuous cycling at 60%-70%HR_(peak);and(iii)control(CON):lying quietly in a supine position for 30 ***:A significant group￡time effect was found for changes in central systolic blood pressure(F=3.20,p=0.01)with a transient reduction for the HIIE group but not for the MICE or CON *** was a significant group￡time effect for changes in augmentation index at a heart rate of 75 beats/min(F=2.32,p=0.04)with a decrease following for HIIE and MICE but not for *** all other measures of central arterial stiffness and hemodynamics,no significant changes were observed(p>0.05).Conclusion:A bout of

＜正＞Objective Brain-derived neurotrophic factor（BDNF） and its receptor,tropomyosin-related kinase receptor B（TrkB）,play a critical role in activity-dependent plasticity processes such as long-term potentiation,learning, and *** has been shown that BDNF exerts different or even opposite effects on behavior depending on the neural ***,the detailed role of BDNF in memory process on the basis of its location has not been fully ***,we aim to investigate the regional specific involvement of BDNF/TrkB in hippocampal-independent conditioned taste aversion（CTA） memory *** Real time PCR and ELIsA were respectively used to detect the BDNF mRNA and protein changes at various time points after CTA *** phosphorylation levels normalized to total TrkB were measured by immunoprecipitation and *** was used to detect role of endogenous BDNF on CTA memory *** We found region-specific changes in BDNF expression during CTA *** conditioning induced increased BDNF levels in the central nuclei of amygdala （CeA） and insular cortex,but not in the basolateral amygdala（BLA） and ventromedial prefrontal ***, we found that the enhanced TrkB phosphorylation occurred at the time point before the increased BDNF expression, suggesting rapid induction of activity-dependent BDNF secretion by CTA ***,targeted infusion of BDNF antibodies or BDNF antisense oligonucleotides revealed that activity-dependent BDNF secretion and synthesis in the CeA,but not the BLA,was respectively involved in the short- and long-term memory formation of ***, we found that infusion of exogenous BDNF into the CeA could enhance CTA *** These data suggest that region-specific BDNF release and synthesis temporally regulate different CTA memory phases through activation of TrkB receptors.
