Effects of simvastatin on NF-κB-DNA Binding Activity and Monocyte Chemoattractant Protein-1 Expression in a Rabbit Model of Atherosclerosis

To observe the effects of simvastatin on nuclear factor kappaB （NF-kB）-DNA binding activity and on the expression of monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 （MCP-1） in atherosclerotic plaque in rabbits and to explore the anti-atherosclerotic properties beyond its lipid-lowering effects. Thirty-six New Zealand male rabbits were randomly divided into low-cholesterol group （LC）, high- cholesterol group （HC）, high-cholesterol＋ simvastatin group （HC＋s） and then were fed for 12 weeks. At the end of the experiment, standard enzymatic assays, electrophoretic mobility shift as- say （EMsA）, immunohistochemical staining, and morphometry were performed to observe serum lipids, NF-kB-DNA binding activity, MCP-1 protein expression, intirna thickness and plaque area of aorta respectively in all three groups. Our results showed that the serum lipids, NF-kB-DNA binding activity, expression of MCP-1 protein, intima thickness, and plaque area of aorta in the LC and HC＋s groups were significantly lower than those in the HC group （P〈0.05）. There was no significant difference in the serum lipids between the LC and HC＋s groups （P〉0.05）, but the NF-kB-DNA binding activity, the expression of MCP-1 protein and the intirna thickness and plaque area of aorta in the HC＋s group were significantly decreased as compared to the LC group （P〈0. 05）. This study demonstrated that simvastatin could decrease atherosclerosis by inhibiting the NF-kB-DNA binding activity and by reducing the expression of MCP-1 protein.

The properties of small amplitude acoustic waves (IAW) in unmagnetised plasma have been discussed in detail. An experimental set up to study the propagation of IAW in argon plasma has been descried. The speed of IAW under different conditions of discharge current and pressure has been measured from the time-of flight technique. From these measurements, electron temperatures have been calculated. The results have been compared with those obtained by single probe method, and were found to be in good agreement with each other so IAW speeds can be used to calculate plasma parameters.

Neospora caninum (N. caninum), a cyst-forming protozoan parasite, is a major cause of bovine abortions and neonatal mortality worldwide. N. caninum has a broad intermediate host range, and its sexual cycle occurs exclusively in canids. Another species of Neospora, Neospora hughesi (N. hughesi), has been identified and causes myeloencephalitis in horses. Although molecular epidemiology studies are in their infancy, the 18s ribosomal RNA (rRNA) and ITs1 regions within the small subunit ribosomal RNA (ssuRNA) and an N. caninum species-specific DNA probe (pNc5) have been used extensively to differentiate Neospora from other closely related apicomplexan parasites. While these repetitive regions have higher sensitivity and specificity than housekeeping or antigen genes, they suffer from low discriminatory power and fail to capture intra-species diversity. similarly, although multiple minisatellite or microsatellite marker studies have shown clear geographic substructures within Neospora, strains are often misclassified due to a convergence in the size of different alleles at microsatellite loci, known as homoplasy. Only one strain, N. caninum Liverpool (Nc-Liv), has been genome sequenced and compared with its closest relative, Toxoplasma gondii (T. gondii). Hence, detailed population genomics studies based on whole-genome sequences from multiple strains worldwide are needed in order to better understand the current population genetic structure of Neospora, and ultimately to determine more effective vaccine candidates against bovine neosporosis. The aim of this review is to outline our current understanding of the molecular epidemiology and genomics of Neospora in juxtaposition with the closely related apicomplexan parasites Hammondia hammondi and T. gondii.

We experimentally demonstrate the optical properties of gratings engraved in a single-mode waveguide fabricated on top of a dielectric multilayer platform. The structure can be approached as a reflector for Bloch-surface-wavebased two-dimensional optical systems. The gratings have been fabricated on a thin(～λ∕25) titanium dioxide layer with a thickness of a few tens of nanometers deposited on the top of a multilayer platform. The optical properties of the gratings have been characterized in the near field with the aid of multi-heterodyne scanning nearfield optical microscopy. We investigate the surface wave's interference pattern, produced by incident and reflected light in front of the gratings. The presented gratings behave as an efficient Bloch-surface–wave-basedreflector at telecommunication wavelength.

The Eastern sikkim area forming a part of the Lesser Himalaya is located between 27°10′～27°30′N latitudes and 88°25′～88°40′E longitudes (750km 2). The previous workers agreed that a domal structure is present in sikkim which is constituted by low to high grade metamorphic rocks characterised by inverted metamorphism. The rocks were repeatedly deformed and were metamorphosed at about 550 to 770℃ (550 to 750MPa). Geologically, the oldest rocks of Eastern sikkim are represented by Darjeeling Formation showing medium to high grade metamorphism. It is followed by low grade Daling Formation which is characterised by tectonic wedges of Lingtse gneiss. The potassic syenite intrusive i.e. the sikkim igneous formation is youngest rock type of the area. The Darjeeling Formation associated with amphibolite bands consists of kyanite\|sillimanite, staurolite and garnet zones, while the Daling Formation is characterised by low grade chloritoid and chlorite zones. Lingtse Formation is gneissic in which patches of retrograded and sheared garnet schists are present. Intrusions of potassic syenites (sikkim Formation) occur in the form of oval and concordant bodies. The F 1, F 2 and F 3 folds are well developed in rocks of Eastern sikkim area.. The F 1 folds are rootless, tightly isoclinal or reclined and highly obliterated in their attitude. The F 2 folds belong to class IC of Ramsay (1967). Their interlimb angles vary from 20～50 degrees. Intersection lineation due to s 0/s 1 and s 2 surfaces is parallel to the F 2 folds axis. Third generation structures are represented by open to moderately tight and kinked folds. superimposition of F 3 folds on F 2 folds resulted into type II interference pattern of Ramsay (1967). structural analysis of these folds have revealed that F 2 folds are non\|cylindrical. Multidimensional QsAR Modeling of Amprenavir Derivatives as HIV-Protease Inhibitors

A computational study has been performed on a series of 55 compounds having (s)-N-(3-(N-(cyclopean- tylmethyl)substituted-phenylsulfonamido)-2-hydroxypropyl)acetamide backbone as HIV-1 protease inhibitors. Various combinations of these specific inhibitors fragments were formed by breaking them at central alicyclic single bonds, while retaining the core. standard Topomer 3D models were automatically constructed for each fragment, and a set of steric and electrostatic fields was generated for each set of topomers. The models generated showed r2 of 0.811 and crossvalidated r2 (q2) of 0.608. The other method used were Quasar and Raptor based on receptor-modelling concept (6D-QsAR) and this explicitly allows for the simulation of the induced fit, that yielded r2 of 0.574, cross-validated r2 (q2) of 0.504 and predictive r2 (q2) of 0.895 averaged over 200 models. This study has suggested the various type of substituent that can be attached to the core. The information obtained from these 3-D contour maps can be used for the design of amprenavir analogs possessing better protease inhibitory activity.

An Epidemiological Model Investigating the Association between Mothers Nutritional status and Low Birth Weight in India

Introduction: Low birth weight (LBW) is the dominating risk factor for infant morbidity and mortality. LBW infants were three times more likely than normal birth weight infants to have neuro developmental complications and congenital abnormalities. The World Health Organization (WHO) has defined the term Low Birth Weight (LBW) as birth weight less than 2500 grams. Objective: To develop epidemiological model investigating the association between mother’s nutritional status and low birth weight in India. Data and Methods: Third round of the National Family Health survey (NFHs-3) data collected during 2005-2006 is used for this study. This data provides a comprehensive picture of population and health conditions in India. To check the association between variables coefficient of contingency was calculated and multivariable logistic regression model was applied to check independent effect of covariates. Univariate, bivariate and multivariable logistics regression model has been developed to investigate the association between mother’s nutritional status and low birth weight in India. Adjusted odds ratios were calculated with 95% confidence interval. Conclusion: The prevalence of low birth weight was observed high among those women who were underweight, anemic, never visited for any ANC checkup. Emphasis needs to be given to maternal nutritional factors which are more persistent across India than the impact of other factors on birth weight. This can be done by selectively targeting interventions to improve nutrition.

In the present study an attempt has been made to present a systematic and interpretative analyses of per capita foodstuffs consumption and nutritional level in the rural areas of sagar division (M. P.). The Central thrust of this study has a bearing on the important aspect partaning to the vital relationship between food intake and health, following Gopalan et. al. (1993), per day per capita foodstuffs consumption is converted into their respective nutritive values. Our survey has revealed that the existing food habits in the villages under study lead to an imbalance of food intake, both quantity-wise and quality-wise, resulting to the nutritional deficiency is closely associated with the food production, diet habits and purchasing power of the individuals.

Herbal medicines are popular natural medicines that have been used for *** use of alternative medicines continues to expand rapidly across the *** World Health Organization suggests that quality assessment of natural medicines is essential for any therapeutic or health care applications,as their therapeutic potential varies between different geographic origins,plant species,and *** of herbal medicines based on a limited number of secondary metabolites is not an ideal *** quality should be considered based on a complete metabolic profile,as their pharmacological activity is not due to a few specific secondary metabolites but rather a larger group of bioactive compounds.A holistic and integrative approach using rapid and nondestructive analytical strategies for the screening of herbal medicines is required for robust *** this study,a rapid and effective quality assessment system for geographical traceability,species,and variety-specific authenticity of the widely used natural medicines turmeric,Ocimum,and Withania somnifera was investigated using Fourier transform near-infrared(FT-NIR)spectroscopy-based metabolic *** different geographical origins of turmeric,five different Ocimum species,and three different varieties of roots and leaves of Withania somnifera were studied with the aid of machine learning *** good discrimination(R^(2)>0.98,Q^(2)>0.97,and accuracy=1.0)with sensitivity and specificity of 100%was achieved using this metabolic fingerprinting *** study demonstrated that FT-NIR-based rapid metabolic fingerprinting can be used as a robust analytical method to authenticate several important medicinal herbs.
