False codling moth Thaumatotibia leucotreta （Lepidoptera, Tortricidae） larvae are chill-susceptible

This study reports on the low temperature tolerance and cold hardiness of larvae of false codling moth, Thaumatotibia leucotreta. We found that larvae have mean critical thermal minima （lower limits of activity） of 6.7℃ which was influenced by feeding status. The effects of low temperature exposure and duration of exposure on larval survival were assessed and showed that the temperature at which 50% of the population survives is -11.5 ± 0.3℃ after 2 h exposure. The supercooling point （sCP, i.e., freezing temperature） was investigated using a range of cooling rates and under different conditions （feeding and hydration status） and using inoculative freezing treatments （in contact with water or orange juice）. The sCP decreased significantly from -15.6℃ to -17.4℃ after larvae were fasted for 24 h. Twenty-four hour treatments at either high or low relative humidity （95.9% or 2.4%） also significantly decreased sCP to -17.2℃ and -18.2℃ respectively. Inoculative freezing （by water contact） raised sCP from -15.6℃ to -6.8℃ which could have important implications for post-harvest sterilization. Cooling rates did not affect sCP which suggests that there is limited phenotypic plasticity of sCP during the larval life-stage, at least over the short time-scales investigated here. In conclusion, larvae of T. leucotreta are chill-susceptible and die upon freezing. These results are important in understanding this pest＇s response to temperature variation, understanding pest risk status and improving post-harvest sterilization efficacy

Taxonomic description of a new marine ciliate,Euplotes qingdaoensis n. sp.(Ciliophora:Euplotida)

The characteristics and infraciliature of a new euplotid ciliate, Euplotes qingdaoensis n. sp., discovered from the coastal waters of Jiaozhou Bay, northern China, were studied using live observation and silver impregnation. The new marine species is characterized by a slightly flattened body （90-110 um×70- 80 um, in vivo）, an adoral zone of 26-29 membranelles, 10 strong frontoventral and five transverse cirri, two caudal cirri, a single left marginal cirrus, seven dorsal kineties, a middle kinety with about 15 pairs of basal bodies, a silverline system of the double-eurystomus type, and a C-shaped macronucleus.

In the face of worldwide amphibian declines,integrative studies combining individual-based information and genetic data represent a powerful approach to produce robust,reliable,and comparable assessments of demographic *** Iberian painted frog(Discoglossus galganoi)is endemic to spain and Portugal and shows decreasing population trends across its range,but few studies have attempted to estimate census sizes or assess genetic diversity in wild populations,and little is known about their reproductive *** applied an integrative approach based on the combination of capture-mark-recapture data and multilocus genotypes to monitor a breeding population of *** in central spain during two consecutive breeding seasons,focusing on the estimation of demographic parameters and their temporal ***,we estimated the number of adults(Na),the effective population size(Ne),and the effective number of breeders(Nb),as well as survival and migration *** documented a>50%decrease in the estimated number of adults of both sexes between the breeding seasons of 2018 and 2019,probably associated with reduced rainfall in the *** of Nb and the Nb/Na ratio were low in both seasons,with a 20–30%decrease in Nb and a 47%increase in the Nb/Na ratio in *** on the reconstruction of pedigrees from larval and adult genotypes,we provide the first genetic evidence of polygamy in males and females of *** and the first estimates of breeding success in the species.

Voltage-gated sodium （Nav） channels are essential for the rapid upstroke of action potentials and the propa- gation of electrical signals in nerves and muscles. Defects of Nav channels are associated with a variety of channelopathies. More than 1000 disease-related muta- tions have been identified in Nay channels, with Nay1.1 and Nay1.5 each harboring more than 400 mutations. Nay channels represent major targets for a wide array of neurotoxins and drugs. Atomic structures of Nav chan- nels are required to understand their function and dis- ease mechanisms. The recently determined atomic structure of the rabbit voltage-gated calcium （Car） channel Carl.1 provides a template for homology-based structural modeling of the evolutionarily related Nay channels. In this Resource article, we summarized all the reported disease-related mutations in human Nav channels, generated a homologous model of human Nay1.7, and structurally mapped disease-associated mutations. Before the determination of structures of human Nay channels, the analysis presented here serves as the base framework for mechanistic investi- gation of Nav channelopathies and for potential struc- ture-based drug discovery.

The chemical transformation of natural oils provides alternatives to limited fossil fuels and produces compounds with added value for the chemical *** selective deoxygenation of natural oils to diesel-ranged hydrocarbons,bio-jet fuels,or fatty alcohols with controllable selectivity is especially attractive in natural oil feedstock *** review presents recent progress in catalytic deoxygenation of natural oils or related model compounds(e.g.,fatty acids)to renewable liquid fuels(green diesel and bio-jet fuels)and valuable fatty alcohols(unsaturated and saturated fatty alcohols).Besides,it discusses and compares the existing and potential strategies to control the product selectivity over heterogeneous *** research conducted and reviewed has only addressed the production of one category;therefore,a new integrative vision exploring how to direct the process toward fuel and/or chemicals is urgently ***,work conducted to date addressing the development of new catalysts and studying the influence of the reaction parameters(e.g.,temperature,time and hydrogen pressure)is summarized and critically discussed from a green and sustainable perspective using efficiency indicators(e.g.,yields,selectivity,turnover frequencies and catalysts lifetime).special attention has been given to the chemical transformations occurring to identify key descriptors to tune the selectivity toward target products by manipulating the reaction conditions and the structures of the ***,the challenges and future research goals to develop novel and holistic natural oil biorefineries are *** a result,this critical review provides the readership with appropriate information to selectively control the transformation of natural oils into either biofuels and/or value-added *** new flexible vision can help pave the wave to suit the present and future market needs.

Protective effect of Irsogladine on monochloramineinduced gastric mucosallesions in rats:a comparative study with rebamipide

AIM To examine the effect of irsogladine, a novel antiulcer drug, on the mucosal ulcerogenic response to monochloramine (NH 2Cl) in rat stomach, in comparison with rebamipide, another antiulcer drug with cytoprotective activity. METHODs AND REsULTs Oral administration of NH 2Cl (120*!mM) produced severe hemorrhagic lesions in unanesthetized rat stomachs. Both irsogladine ( 1*!mg/*!kg - 10*!mg/*!kg , po ) and rebamipide ( 30*!mg/*!kg - 100*!mg/*!kg , po ) dose dependently prevented the development of these lesions in response to NH 2Cl, the effect of irsogladine was significant at 3*!mg/*!kg or greater, and that of rebamipide only at 100*!mg/*!kg . The protective effect of irsogladine on NH 2Cl induced gastric lesions was significantly reduced by N G nitro L arginine methyl ester (L NAME) but not by indomethacin, while that of rebamipide was significantly mitigated by indomethacin but not by L NAME. Topical application of NH 2Cl (20*!mM) caused a marked reduction of potential difference (PD) in ex vivo stomachs. This PD reduction was not affected by mucosal application of irsogladine, but significantly prevented by rebamipide. The mucosal exposure to NH 4OH (120*!mM) also caused a marked PD reduction in the ischemic stomach (bleeding from the carotid artery), resulting in gastric lesions. These ulcerogenic and PD responses caused by NH 4OH plus ischemia were also significantly mitigated by rebamipide, in an indomethacin sensitive manner, while irsogladine potently prevented such lesions without affecting the PD response, in a L NAME sensitive manner. CONCLUsION These results suggest that ① NH 2Cl generated either exogenously or endogenously damages the gastric mucosa, ② both irsogladine and rebamipide protect the stomach against injury caused by NH 2Cl, and ③ the mechanism underlying the protective action of irsogladine is partly mediated by endogenous nitric oxide, while that of rebamipide is in part mediated by endogenous prostaglandins.

Peristaltic motion induced by a surface acoustic wave of a viscous, compressible and electrically conducting Maxwell fluid in a confined parallel-plane microchannel through a porous medium is investigated in the presence of a constant magnetic field. The slip velocity is considered and the problem is discussed only for the free pumping case. A perturbation technique is employed to analyze the problem in terms of a small amplitude ratio. The phenomenon of a “backward flow” is found to exist in the center and at the boundaries of the channel. In the second order approximation, the net axial velocity is calculated for various values of the fluid parameters. Finally, the effects of the parameters of interest on the mean axial velocity, the reversal flow, and the perturbation function are discussed and shown graphically. We find that in the non-Newtonian regime, there is a possibility of a fluid flow in the direction opposite to the propagation of the traveling wave. This work is the most general model of peristalsis created to date with wide-ranging applications in biological, geophysical and industrial fluid dynamics.

Numerical evaluation of sample size effect on the stress-strain behavior of geotextile-reinforced sand

This paper studies the effect of sample size on the stress-strain behavior and strength characteristics of geotextile reinforced sand using the finite element numerical analysis. The effect of sample size was investigated by studying the effects of varying the number of geotextile layers, the confining pressure and the type of geotextile. Modeling was performed on samples with five different diameters: 38, 100, 200, 500 and 600 mm. The elastic-plastic Mohr-Coulomb model was used to simulate sand behavior. Results showed that small-sized samples show higher values of peak strength and higher axial strain at failure in comparison with large-sized samples. The size effect on the behavior of samples became further apparent when the number of geotextile layers was increased or the confining pressure was decreased. In addition, the results indicated that the magnitude of the size effect on the mechanical behavior of reinforced sand decreases with an increase in the sample size.
