Pancreatic hyperechogenicity associated with hypoadiponectinemia and insulin resistance: A Japanese population study

AIM To examine the relationship between pancreatic hyperechogenicity and risk factors for metabolic *** A general population-based survey of lifestyle-related diseases was conducted from 2005 to 2006 in Japan. The study involved 551 participants older than 40 year of age. Data for 472 non-diabetic adults were included in the analysis. The measures included the demographic factors, blood parameters, results of a 75 g oral glucose tolerance test, and abdominal ultrasonography. The echogenicity of the pancreas and liver was compared, and then the subjects were separated into two groups: cases with pancreatic hyperechogenicity(n = 208) and cases without(controls, n = 264). The differences between both groups were compared using an unpaired t-test or Fisher's exact test. Multiple logistic regression analysis was used to determine the relationship between the pancreatic hyperechogenicity and clinical and bio-chemical *** subjects with pancreatic hyperechogenicity had decreased serum adiponectin concentration compared to control subjects [8.9(6.5, 12.8) vs 11.1(7.8, 15.9), P s of metabolic syndrome. Logistic regression analysis showed that the following variables were significantly and independently associated with pancreatic hyperechogenicity: Presence of hypoadiponectinemia, increased body mass index(BMI), higher homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance(HOMA-IR) score, and presence of fatty liver. similar associations were also observed in subjects with pancreatic hyperechogenicity without fatty liver. Multivariate association analysis of data from participants without fatty liver showed that hypoadiponectinemia was significantly associated with pancreatic hyperechogenicity(OR = 0.93, 95%CI: 0.90- 0.97, P s association was independent of other confounding variables. Three New Anamorph of <i>Ceramothyrium</i>from Fallen Leaves in Vietnam

Three new anamorph of Ceramothyrium aquaticum sp. nov., Ceramothyrium exiguum sp. nov., and Ceramothyrium phuquocense sp. nov. are described and illustrated. These fungi were isolated from submerged decaying leaves collected from Phu Quoc National Park, Phu Quoc province, Viet Nam. The phylogeny based on ITs region and D1/D2 of the 28s rDNA gene showed that these fungi nested in the Ceramothyrium. Morphologically, C. aquaticum, C. phuquocense sp. nov. and C. exiguum sp. nov. are characterized;they were different from known anamorph species of Ceramothyrium by having one main axis and two lateral arms with 70 - 90, 33.5 - 72.5 and 70 - 130 μm long main axis, respectively. small Angle X-Ray scattering Imaging of soft Tissue by Using Laue Diffraction Optical system

We performed a feasibility study of small angle X-ray scattering imaging under the condition of X-ray bright field imaging by Laue crystal diffraction optics of X-ray dark-field imaging that works as an angular analysis. Collagen in chicken tibia containing abundant soft fibrous tissue was chosen as a specimen. In traditional small angle X-ray scattering optical system, we can derive the structure information of sample by calculating q value which is available from a scattering pattern. Thus it is usually necessary to conduct a 2D scan in order to obtain scattering image. In this paper it is described by a method by which not only small angle X-ray scattering imaging is available directly but also bright-field imaging and dark-field imaging can be obtained at the same time. As the first step, the feasibility of the imaging method should be confirmed by taking pictures of the samples with known periodic length. The preliminary test showed that the collgan’s lattice spacing d is 65.1 nm that was also taken photos by scanning electron microscopy. By rotating Laue angular analyzer by 112 arcseconds small angle X-ray scattering image appeared in bright-field.

Melon(*** L.)is an economically important vegetable crop cultivated *** melon collection in the *** Plant Germplasm system(NPGs)is a valuable resource to conserve natural genetic diversity and provide novel traits for melon *** we use the genotyping-by-sequencing(GBs)technology to characterize 2083 melon accessions in the NPGs collected from major melon production areas as well as regions where primitive melons *** structure and genetic diversity analyses suggested that *** *** was firstly introduced from the centers of origin,Indian and Pakistan,to Central and West Asia,and then brought to Europe and *** *** from East Asia was likely derived from *** *** in India and Pakistan and displayed a distinct genetic background compared to the rest of *** accessions from other geographic *** developed a core collection of 383 accessions capturing more than 98%of genetic variation in the germplasm,providing a publicly accessible collection for future research and genomics-assisted breeding of ***-five morphological characters investigated in the core collection indicated high variability of these characters across accessions in the ***-wide association studies using the core collection panel identified potentially associated genome regions related to fruit quality and other horticultural *** study provides insights into melon origin and domestication,and the constructed core collection and identified genome loci potentially associated with important traits provide valuable resources for future melon research and breeding.

The Mechanism of Decreased serum Phosphorus Levels in Rats with Chronic Kidney Disease after Oral Administration of <i>Bifidobacterium longum</i>

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients are prone to disturbances in the intestinal microbiota, which contributes to CKD progression and complications. We previously reported a reduction of serum phosphorus (P) levels in hemodialysis patients receiving oral encapsulated bifidobacteria. The present study was conducted to clarify the mechanisms of P-lowering effect of bifidobacteria on CKD rats. CKD was induced in rats by 5/6 nephrectomy. Five weeks later, the rats were fed for 4 weeks on a powder diet containing encapsulated bifidobacteria. At the end of the study, intestinal contents were sampled for analyses of pH, intestinal flora and short-chain fatty acids (sCFAs). Oral administration of bifidobacteria halted the onset and progression of hyperphosphatemia in CKD rats. The increased number of bifidobacteria was confirmed in the cecum. In addition, the increase in intestinal pH in CKD rats was decreased after bifidobacteria treatment, along with increases in some sCFAs. Furthermore, positive correlation between serum P levels and intestinal pH was observed. In conclusion, the mechanism for the P-lowering effect of bifidobacteria was supposed as follows: CKD conditions increase aerobic bacteria which hydrolyze urea into ammonia. Elevated pH decreases ionization of intestinal calcium (Ca) which leads to an increase in free phosphate ions through reduction of Ca phosphate crystal precipitation. Administered bifidobacteria fermented carbohydrates to produce sCFAs, resulting in acidification of the intestinal lumen. The resulting low intestinal pH increases Ca ionization, which binds with free phosphate ions as an intrinsic P binder, resulting in the reduction of serum P levels.

The Western Tropical Pacific(WTP) Ocean holds the largest area of warm water(>28℃) in the world ocean referred to as the Western Pacific Warm Pool(WPWP),which modulates the regional and global climate through strong atmospheric convection and its *** WTP is unique in terms of its complex 3-D ocean circulation system and intensive multiscale variability,making it crucial in the water and energy cycle of the global *** advances have been made in understanding the complexity of the WTP ocean circulation and associated climate impact by the international scientific community since the 1960 s through field *** this study,we review the evolving insight to the 3-D structure and multi-scale variability of the ocean circulation in the WTP and their climatic impacts based on in-situ ocean observations in the past decades,with emphasis on the achievements since *** challenges and open que stions remaining are reviewed as well as future plan for international study of the WTP ocean circulation and climate.

Background: Preoperative chemoradiotherapy (CRT) with 5-FU has been widely used to improve local control of disease and to preserve anal sphincter in the treatment of rectal cancer. UFT and s-1 as oral dihydropyrimidine dehydrogenase (DPD)-inhibitory fluoropyrimidines enhance the therapeutic effect of 5-FU by modulating its metabolic pathways. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and toxicity of CRT using UFT versus s-1 in patients with locally advanced rectal cancer. Methods: Fifty-nine patients who received preoperative CRT (40 Gy radiotherapy) were randomly assigned to either UFT or s-1 groups. UFT and s-1 were administered during the radiotherapy course. Response to CRT was determined using a histopathologic examination and RECIsT of surgically resected specimens and classified as responders (CR, PR and grade 2, 3) or nonresponders (sD, PD and grade 0, 1). Results: All patients were randomly allocated to s-1 group (n = 30) or UFT group (n = 29). Pathological response rate (Grade2 and Grade3) was 57% in the s-1 group and 45% in the UFT group (p = 0.36). Pathological complete response (CR) rate (Grade3) was 7% in the s-1 group and 4% in the UFT group (p = 0.98). There was no statistically significant difference between the two groups in regard to the response rate of RECIsT (p = 0.52). There was no statistically significant difference between the groups based on the downstaging rate, resection of tumor, sphincter preservation and marginal invasion. The incidence of Grade 3 diarrhea was significantly more frequent in the s-1 group (7%) compared with the UFT group (0%) (p = 0.02). Conclusion: The results supported the conclusion that CRT using UFT or s-1 is effective and feasible for patients with locally advanced rectal cancer.
