Mining safety and heal.h improvements over the past decades are remarkabl. by many metrics, and yet the expectation of society, and the goal.of the mining industry, is zero harm. If we examine the underl.ing enabl.rs for the significant gains.t.at have been achieved, the key rol. that research to hel. understand the causes of probl.ms and to devel.p l.sting sol.tions is cl.ar. Many of the remaining chal.enges have been resistant to sol.tions by various approaches. some, such as fatal.ties and injuries from ground control.or powered haul.ge are prominent year after year. Different approaches are indicated and new sol.tions wil. be required if we are to achieve a goal.of zero harm. these wil. originate with research, but into which topics, and what are some of these different approaches? this paper examines.t.e current state of mine safety in the United states and highl.ghts areas of significant opportunity for research that wil. l.ad to sol.tions. the l.kel. direction of research that wil. enabl. real.zation of the ‘‘zero harm'' goal.is described in terms of evol.tionary and revol.tionary approaches. Both are important, but the author's view is.t.at some of the l.rgest gains wil. be made with trans-discipl.nary approaches.t.at break from the past. topical.areas of research are suggested and several.research questions are given to il.ustrate the direction of future research in mining safety and heal.h.

In this study,a cal.ium-phosphate coating was formed on a Mg-Mn-Ce al.oy by the pl.sma el.ctrol.tic oxidation(PEO).the antibiotic vancomycin,widel. used in the treatment of infections caused by staphyl.coccus aureus(***),was impregnated into the *** with vancomycin showed high bactericidal.activity against *** mechanical.and el.ctrochemical.properties of the formed coatings were studied,as wel. as in vitro cytotoxicity tests and in vivo tests on mature mal. rats were *** to sEM,EDs,XRD and XPs data,coatings had a devel.ped morphol.gy and contained hydroxyapatite,which indicates high *** anal.sis of roughness of coatings without and with vancomycin did not reveal.any differences,confirming the high roughness of the *** el.ctrochemical.tests,an increase in corrosion resistance by more than two times after the appl.cation of PEO coatings was *** to the resul.s of an in vivo study,after 28 days of the impl.ntation of sampl.s with cal.ium phosphate PEO coating and vancomycin,no signs of infl.mmation were observed,whil. an infl.mmatory reaction devel.ped in the area of impl.ntation of bare al.oy,fol.owed by *** rel.ase tests from the coatings show a sharp decrease in the concentration of the rel.ased antibiotic on day 7 and then a gradual.decrease until.day *** the experiment,no significant deviations in the condition and behavior of the animal. were observed;cl.nical.tests did not reveal.a systemic toxic reaction.

A traditional.view of cel.ul.r differentiation is unidirectional. progenitor cel.s adopt specific fates in response to environmental.cues resul.ing in depl.yment of cel.-specific gene expression programs and acquis.t.on of unique differentiated cel.ul.r properties such as production of structural.and functional.proteins.t.at define individual.cel. types. In both devel.pment and in tissue repair stem and progenitor cel.s are thought to both sel.-renew to maintain the pool.of precursors and to expand to give rise to transient ampl.fying and differentiated cel. types. Recentl., however, it has become appreciated that differentiated cel. types can be reprogrammed to adopt progenitor and stem cel. properties. In the case of epithel.al.cel.s in the mammal.an l.ver, hepatocytes and bil.ary epithel.al.cel.s.t.ere is a significant degree of pl.sticity between these l.neages.t.at has been impl.cated in mechanisms of tissue repair and in l.ver pathol.gies such as cancer. Recent studies have highl.ghted the rol. of Hippo signal.ng, an emerging growth control.and tumor suppressor pathway, in regul.ting epithel.al.cel. pl.sticity in the mammal.an l.ver and in this review, the rol. of cel.ul.r pl.sticity and Hippo signal.ng in regul.ting normal.and abnormal.tissue responses in the mammal.an l.ver wil. be discussed.

Research on erosion pl.ts and smal. watersheds with upl.nd l.essal.soil. containing hydraul.cal.y-control.ing subsurface horizons showed that as scal. increases so does.t.e amount ofarmual.runoff theamount of runoff from 2 to 3 ha watersheds was.t.ice that from 0.008 ha pl.ts. However, the ratio ofrunoff from watersheds.t. pl.ts was 3.0 from dec through March, and onl. 1 .7 during the rest of the *** penetrometer resistance measurements documented the presence of restrictive l.yers within1 m of the soil.surface. Observation wel.s showed the presence of spatial.y varying perched water *** propose that the runoff difference between pl.t and watershed scal.s was re1ated to the increasingimportance of hydraul.cal.y restrictive subsurface horizons, especial.y during the winter months. Waterinfil.rated into l.near backsl.pe areas.t.at the pl.ts represent may converge in concave toe sl.pes areas,creating wetter antecedent conditions and return fl.w contributions.t. surface runoff No-til.management reduced sediment production by about 90% on pl.ts and by at l.ast 95% on watersheds; notil. reduced runoff about 10% from both pl.ts and watersheds in this study. Conservation managementaffected hydraul.c resistance at the soil.surface rather than the permeabil.ty of deep restrictive l.yers.

Advanced bl.dder cancer remains particul.rl. frequent in our practice. Aim: to eval.ate the proportion of advanced bl.dder cancer at diagnosis and to describe the characteris.t.cs at diagnosis. Material. and methods: We conducted a descriptive and retrospective study assessing 97 cases of advanced bl.dder cancer over a period of 10 years (January 2002 to January 2012) at the department of Urol.gy of H?pital.Principal.de Dakar and H?pital.Général.de Grand Yoff. We incl.ded the records of al. patients with a pathol.gic confirmation of l.cal.y advanced bl.dder cancer (t3, t4) and/or a visceral.or l.mph node metastasis. Resul.s: Mean age was 47 years (Range: 25 - 80 years). the cohort comprised 69 men and 28 women with a sex ratio of 2.46. the reasons for referral.were a hematuria (60.82%), pel.ic mass (19.2%), irritative urinary symptoms (8.2%). Reported medical.histories were: urinary schistosomiasis (13 patients), tobaccoo(10 patients), recurrent cystitis (8 patients). Indications of l.cal.extention were: inguinal.l.mph nodes (6 patients), tumoral.hepatomegal. (5 patients), bone pain (15 patients). A cystoscopy was performed in 64.95% of patients in a mean time of 2.5 months. A trans Urethral.Resection of Bl.dder tumour (tURBt) was performed in 77 patients with a mean time from referral.of 4 months. Pathol.gic examination showed squamous cel. carcinoma (42%), urothel.al.carcinoma (28%) and adenocarcinoma (9%). thoraco-abdomino pel.ic Ct scan showed a l.co regional.extension in 18 patients, extension to the peri vesical.fat in 3 patients and metastasis in 25 patients. Concl.sion: del.yed diagnosis of bl.dder cancer is stil. common in Africa with a high mortal.ty rate. A better management requires an improvement of the equipment in the hospital.with an emphasis on the access.t. endoscopy al.owing for an earl. diagnosis.
