Iron oxide nanostructures are promising materials to be used as photocatalysts in different photoelectrochemical applications. There are different techniques in order to synthesize these nanostructures, but one of the most inexpensive and simple method is electrochemical anodization. This method can lead to different nanostructures by controlling its parameters. Anodization time is one of the most critical parameters since it considerably affects the properties of the obtained nanostructures. In this work, different anodization times(5, 10, 15, 30 and 60 min) were studied. The resulting nanotubes were characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy, Raman laser confocal microscopy, water splitting measurements, Mott-schottky analysis and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, in order to test their viability for being used as photocatalysts in photoelectrochemical applications. Results showed that the best photocurrent density values in water splitting tests(0.263 m A m-2) were achieved for the sample anodized for 10 min under hydrodynamic conditions.

Two-dimensional （2D） layered transition metal dichalcogenide （TMD） materials （e.g., Mos2） have attracted considerable interest due to their atomically thin geometry and semiconducting electronic properties. With ultrahigh surface to volume ratio, the electronic properties of these atomically thin semiconductors can be readily modulated by their environment. Here we report an investigation of the effects of mercury（II）（Hg^2＋） ions on the electrical transport properties of few-layer molybdenum disulfide （Mos2）. The interaction between Hg^2＋ ions and few-layer Mos2 was studied by field-effect transistor measurements and photoluminescence. Due to a high binding affinity between Hg2. ions and the sulfur sites on the surface of Mos2 layers, Hg^2＋ ions can strongly bind to Mos2. We show that the binding of Hg^2＋ can produce a p-type doping effect to reduce the electron concentration in n-type few-layer Mos2. It can thus effectively modulate the electron transport and photoluminescence properties in few-layer Mos2. By monitoring the conductance change of few-layer Mos2 in varying concentration Hg2~ solutions, we further show that few-layer Mos2 transistors can function as highly sensitive sensors for rapid electrical detection of Hg^2＋ ion with a detection limit of 30 pM.

Background: Due to greater infection susceptibility, sepsis is the main cause of death in burn patients. Quick diagnosis and patient stratification, early and appropriated antimicrobial therapy, and focus control are crucial for patients’survival. On the other hand, superfluous extension of therapy is associated with adverse events and arousal of microbial resistance. The use of biomarkers, necessarily coupled with close clinical examination, may predict outcomes, stratifying patients who need more intensive care, and monitor the efficacy of antimicrobial therapy, allowing faster de-escalation or stop, reducing the development of resistance and possibly the financial burden, without increasing mortality. The aim of this work is to check the suitability of procalcitonin (PCT) to fulfill these goals in a large sample of septic burn patients. Methods: One hundred and one patients, with 15% or more of total body surface area (TBsA) burned, admitted from January 2011 to December 2014 at Coimbra Burns Unit (CBU), in Portugal were included in the sample. All patients had a diagnosis of sepsis, according to the American Burn Association (ABA) criteria. The sample was factored by survival (68 survivors and 33 non-survivors). The maximum value of PCT in each day was used for statistical analysis. Data were summarized by location measures (mean, median, minimum, maximum, quartiles) and dispersion measures (standard error and range measures). statistical analysis was performed with sPss?23.0 IBM? for Windows?. Results: There were statistically significant differences between PCT levels of patients from the survivor and non-survivor groups during the first and the last weeks of hospitalization as well as during the first week after sepsis suspicion, being slightly higher during this period. During the first 7 days of antimicrobial therapy, PCT was always higher in the non-survivor, still without reaching statistical significance, but when the analysis was extended till the 15th

Background: Little is known about the factors that may influence women's adherence to moderate-to-vigorous physical activity(MVPA) using longitudinal data. The purpose of this study was to examine the correlates of long-term physical activity(PA) participation among ***: Female data from Waves I, III, and IV(n = 5381) of the National Longitudinal study of Adolescent to Adult Health(Add Health) were used for the analysis. The outcome of PA adherence was operationalized as(1) consistently physically active(at least 5 instances during the week)in both Waves III and IV(during adulthood), and(2) consistently not physically active or only physically active in either Wave III or IV. Predictor variables from Wave I(during adolescence) included race/ethnicity, PA level, self-perception of being physically fit, general health status, attempt to change weight, parents' income level, parents' education, well-being, depression, access to PA resources, days of physical education(PE), and grade level. Crude and adjusted logistic regression models were utilized to estimate the adjusted odds ratio(a OR) and 95% confidence interval(95%CI) for the outcome ***: PA levels during adolescence significantly predicted PA adherence(a OR = 1.67, 95%CI: 1.35–2.05). Additionally, wanting to lose weight(a OR = 1.49, 95%CI: 1.20–1.85), using fitness center in the neighborhood(a OR = 1.29, 95%CI: 1.05–1.58), and having 5 days of PE a week(a OR = 1.48, 95%CI: 1.09–2.02) were significant predictors. Women who did not perceive being physically fit(a OR = 0.65, 95%CI: 0.44–0.95)and Black, non-Hispanics(a OR = 0.60, 95%CI: 0.44–0.82) were less likely to adhere to ***: The findings suggested that physically active adolescents were more likely to become active adults. Future research should address interventions(e.g., PE program, community resources) that may promote lifetime PA in women, with the goal of decreasing morbidity and mortality.

self-consistent ab initio calculations are performed on the structural, electronic and optical properties of wurtzite ZnO. The Full Potential Linearized Augmented Plane Wave (FP-LAPW) method is applied to solve the Kohn-sham equations. Results are obtained by using the PBE-GGA and mBJLDA exchange correlation potentials. The energy and charge convergence have been examined to study the ground state properties. The band structure and Density of states (DOs) diagrams are plotted from the calculated equilibrium lattice parameters. The general profiles of the optical spectra and the optical properties, including the real and imaginary part of dielectric function, reflectivity, refractive index, absorption co-efficient, electron energy loss function and optical conductivity of wurtzite ZnO under ambient conditions are discussed. The optical anisotropy is studied through the calculated optical constants, namely dielectric function and refractive index along three different crystallographic axes.

Assessing the estrogenic potency in a Portuguese wastewater treatment plant using an integrated approach

The estrogenic potency of a wastewater treatment plant （WWTP） was evaluated using chemical and biological analyses, which showed that after the station treatment processes some of the selected endocrine disruptor compounds （EDCs） were still present in the treated effluent （e.g., bisphenol A, alkylphenols, estrone）. Thus, the most common endocrine EDCs were identified and quantified and the overall estrogenicity of the treated effluent assessed by integrating the results. Male goldfish （Carassius auratus） were used as biological indicators in a 28-day experiment. Vitellogenin （Vtg）, gonadosomatic and hepatosomatic indices, steroids （17β-estradiol and 11-ketotestosterone） and histopathology were biomarkers used in fish to evaluate WWTP treated effluent estrogenicity, in combination with instrumental analyses. The results showed a significant increase （P 〈 0.01） in plasma and liver Vtg, which were significantly correlated （r = 0.66; P 〈 0.01）. The gonadosmatic index was significantly （P 〈 0.01） reduced in exposed fish. The steroid analyses revealed significant elevations in 17β-estradiol and depressed 11-ketotestosterone concentrations. The histological examinations show changes in exposed fish gonads, such as regressed testes and in some cases （43% to 75%） the development of ovo-testis in fish exposed to 50% and 100% treated effluent.
