Population genetic structuring is common among herbivorous insects and frequently is associated with divergent host plants, such as crops and their wild relatives. Previous studies showed population genetic structuring in corn leafhopper Dulbulus maidis in Mexico, such that the species consists of two sympatric, host plant-associated populations: an abundant and widespread "pestiferous” population on maize (Zea mays mays), and a small and localized "wild" population on perennial teosinte (Zea diploperennis). a maize wild relative with a limited distribution. This study addressed whether assortative mating and immigrant inviability mediate genetic structuring of corn leafliopper by comparing the mating and reproductive successes of pestiferous and wild females that colonize their nonassociated host plants against the successes of females colonizing their associated host plants. Assortative mating was assessed by comparing mating frequencies and premating and mating times among females of each population on each host plant: immigrant inviability was assessed by comparing, across two generations, the fecundity, survival, development time, sex ratio, and population growth rate among leafhopper populations and host plants. Our results showed that on maize, and compared to resident, pestiferous females, wild females were more likely to mate, and greater proportions of their offspring survived to adult stage and were daughters;consequently, the per-generation population growth rate on maize was greater for immigrant, wild leafhoppers compared to resident, pestiferous leafhoppers. Our results suggested that wild leafhoppers emigrating to maize have a fitness advantage over resident, pestiferous leafhoppers, while immigrant pestiferous and resident wild leafhoppers on teosinte have similar fitnesses.

A stable one-dimensional system in an orthorhombic α-Vsub>2sub>Osub>5sub> nanowires monocrystalline structure was obtained by a solvothermal method from a polymorphic Vsub>2sub>Osub>5sub> structure. The starting material was firstly submitted to acid hydrolysis in Hsub>2sub>Osub>2sub> followed by a solvothermal treatment. The outcome of this procedure, a metastable phase of the one-dimensional system Vsub>10sub>Osub>24sub>·12Hsub>2sub>O/Vsub>3sub>Osub>7sub>·Hsub>2sub>O, was subsequently reoxidized by controlled heating in an open air system. The final product was an orange crystalline solid mainly formed by monocrystalline nanowires of α-Vsub>2sub>Osub>5sub> having lengths of tens of micrometers and widths of about 75 nm with a preferential [200] growth direction. It was found that the pH value of the initial solution plays an important role in the formation of the crystalline phase in the final products. Characterization was performed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (seM) and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTeM). This study offers an alternate route for the synthesis of vanadium oxides and related compounds.

Mycetoma is a chronic, granulomatous, progressive inflammatory disease;it usually involves the subcutaneous tissue after a traumatic inoculation of the causative organism. Mycetoma may be caused by true fungi or bacteria (actinomycetes) and hence it is classified as eumycetoma and actinomycetoma respectively. Mycetoma immunological studies have fre- quently addressed humoral aspects. Few reports have addressed the role of cellular immunity in humans, for this reason, we were interested in finding differences in the circulating population of mononuclear cells or in the ability of this pathology to produce cytokines after mitogen stimulation. In this study, immunophenotyping of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMn) and intracellular detection by flow cytometry of IL-2, IFnγ and IL-4 in patients with actino- mycetoma by nocardia brasiliensis and Actino- madura madurae were evaluated. We investi- gated the expression of T-cells (CD3, CD4 and CD8), B-cells (CD19), monocytes (CD14), and natural killer cells (CD16 and CD56) markers. CD69 and CD25 were used to monitor individual activated cell subsets. The percentage values of the cells were calculated. Our results indicated that PBMC from patients with mycetoma show similar percentages of circulating cells when compared with healthy donors. The expression of IL-2 receptor (IL-2R) by mitogen activation was similar in these two groups. These findings suggest that circulating lymphocytes are not affected by this pathology. Intracellular IL-4 was increased only in patients with mycetoma by n. brasiliensis, suggesting a TH2 profile;this ob- servation has been reported by other authors.

There are few studies oriented to analyze the interaction between the variables of the stripping process of actual leaching solutions. The aim of this work was to study the effect of temperature and the percent of organic phase in the stripping pseudo-emulsion (D2ePHA and kerosene) on the manganese stripping process. Other studied variables were the acid concentration (H2sO4) in the aqueous phase, the percent of the organic phase in the pseudo-emulsion and the number of stripping stages. This information may be of interest to countries with radical temperature variations. It was discovered that in the range of 10?C to 50?C, temperature improves the depletion of manganese from the D2ePHA. Additionally, the percent of the organic phase should be less than 90% by volume of the pseudo-emulsion to favour the manganese exchange. Moreover, the H2sO4 concentration in the aqueous phase should be less than 1 M to avoid chemical instability of the organic phase.
