Approximating Ordinary Differential Equations by Means of the Chess Game Moves

The chess game provides a very rich experience in neighborhood types. The chess pieces have vertical, horizontal, diagonal, up/down or combined movements on one or many squares of the chess. These movements can associate with neighborhoods. Our work aims to set a behavioral approximation between calculations carried out by means of traditional computation tools such as ordinary differential equations (ODEs) and the evolution of the value of the cells caused by the chess game moves. Our proposal is based on a grid. The cells’ value changes as time pass depending on both their neighborhood and an update rule. This framework succeeds in applying real data matching in the cases of the ODEs used in compartmental models of disease expansion, such as the well-known susceptible-Infected Recovered (sIR) model and its derivatives, as well as in the case of population dynamics in competition for resources, depicted by the Lotke-Volterra model.

Response of Epilithic Diatom Communities to Downstream Nutrient Increases in Castelhano stream,Venancio Aires City,Rs,Brazil

The Castelhano stream Hydrographic Basin, located in the city of Venancio Aires, Rs, Brazil, shows an area of 675.3 km2, highlighting the Castelhano stream as their main water course. The stream is the main responsiblity for the local water supply;however, there are no published studies in the literature regarding their water quality. In this context, the present research aimed to assess the water quality of Castelhano stream in terms of organic pollution and eutrophication, applying the Biological Water Quality Index (BWQI), which uses epilithic diatoms communities as bioindicators. Biological samples were collected at three sampling stations along the stream in the months of september, November and December 2012. The results showed 81 identified species, distributed in 30 genera. The water pollution levels detected ranged from “strong” (66.7%) and “very strong” (33.3%), with differences in species composition between sampling stations. The sampling station s1 in the upper reaches was characterized by the presence of indicative species of acidophilus and lentic environments with large amounts of organic matter. The sampling stations s2 and s3, in the intermediate and lower reaches, respectively, showed a substitution of species in the community, with the presence of highly tolerant taxa to organic pollution and eutrophication. The high pollution levels detected along the basin are related to the nutrients and high organic load originating from livestock, domestic and industrial waste, as well as excess fertilizers and agricultural inputs used in farming. The results demonstrate the necessity to implement mitigation measures to contain the processes of organic pollution and eutrophication detected due to the dangers offered to public health and the environment.

Change in Preoperative Nervousness: A Randomized Controlled Trial in Gynecological Cancer Patients

Patients are often nervous prior to surgery and females might suffer the most. Increased nervousness needs attention as it can negatively affect postoperative recovery. support from nurses, i.e. being present, attentive, empowering and helpful to the patient, and talking about what is on the patient’s mind, might help to reduce nervousness. However, there is a lack of evidence as to the ideal level of attention and resources to reduce preoperative nervousness. The objective of the current study was to compare a range of care combinations with standard care to female patients prior to sedation and cancer surgery primarily on difference in change in nervousness from admission until sedation before cancer surgery, measured on a Visual Analouge scale. Using simple randomization and numbers in sealed envelopes, adult gynaecological patients scheduled for open cancer surgery were allocated to care provided by a nurse anaesthetist and: A) a surgical nurse, B) no additional care, C) a known nurse , and D) a relative. Only the statistician was blinded. The trial stopped when the calculated numbers were included. In the full analysis set, compared to standard care A) (n = 61), we observed the following mean changes and [95% confidence intervals]: B) (n = 65) 1.05 [CI: 0.298 to 1.794] with p = 0.006, C) (n = 61): -0.38 [-1.140 to 0.385] with p = 0.330, D) (n = 71): 0.23 [-0.498 to 0.967] with p = 0.528. Female cancer patients will benefit from supportive care by a surgical nurse from the time of arrival on the operating ward plus supportive care from a nurse anesthetist from 5 - 10 minutes after entering the operating ward. It is not recommended at any time to rely fully on the support of relatives. The effect on adults of preoperative painful procedures and patients’ time alone on the operating ward should be further investigated.

An outbreak of suspected contact dermatitis among subway construction workers was suspected to be due to a new bisphenol A/F-based epoxy resin system(ERs). The construction workers used ERss during the insertion of iron bars into concrete *** objective of the study was to determine the components(if any) of the ERs responsible for the contact allergy. Patch testing was performed on 20 of the 22 construction workers who had had contact with the ERs, and to the various subcomponents of component A on 5 of the 7 who reacted to this component. 9 patients (9/22, 40.9%) had clinical symptoms and signs of suspected contact dermatitis at presentation. 7 of these 9, but none of the 11 asymptomatic individuals, were positive to component A, while all were negative to component B. Of the 5 cases receiving further patch testing, all reacted to m-xylylene diamine, 4 to 1,6-hexanediol diglycidyl ether, 3 to epoxy resins of the bisphenol F-type and trimethylolpropane triglycidyl ether 0.25%petrolatum, and only 1 to epoxy resins of the bisphenol A-type. Contact allergy to ERss may involve hardeners and diluents as well as resins, and patch testing for reaction to all components should be performed.

Orbital angular momentum based intra- and interparticle entangled states generated via a quantum dot source

Engineering single-photon states endowed with orbital angular momentum (OAM) is a powerful toolfor quantum information photonic implementations. Indeed, due to its unbounded nature, OAM is suitable forencoding qudits, allowing a single carrier to transport a large amount of information. Most of the experimentalplatforms employ spontaneous parametric down-conversion processes to generate single photons, evenif this approach is intrinsically probabilistic, leading to scalability issues for an increasing number of *** quantum dots (QDs) have been used to get over these limitations by producing on-demand pure and indistinguishable single-photon states, although only recently they have been exploitedto create OAM modes. Our work employs a bright QD single-photon source to generate a complete set ofquantum states for information processing with OAM-endowed photons. We first study hybrid intraparticleentanglement between OAM and polarization degrees of freedom of a single photon whose preparationwas certified by means of Hong–Ou–Mandel visibility. Then, we investigate hybrid interparticle OAM-based entanglement by exploiting a probabilistic entangling gate. The performance of our approach isassessed by performing quantum state tomography and violating Bell inequalities. Our results pave theway for the use of deterministic sources for the on-demand generation of photonic high-dimensionalquantum states.
