The variations.noticed in the atmos.heric electric field recorded at Pune (18°32'N, 73°51'E, 559 m As.), a tropical inland s.ation located in Dcccan Plateau, India, during the period 1930-1987, have been examined in relation to the variations.obs.rved in the Angs.rom turbidity coefficient (β) and s.lected meteorological parameters. The monthly and annual mean values.of the atmos.heric electric field. Angs.rom turbidity coefficient (β), rainfall, temperature and relative humidity for the years.1930-1938, 1957-1958, 1964-1965, 1973-1974 and 1987 were cons.dered in the *** res.lts.of the above s.udy indicated gradual increas.s.in the atmos.heric electric field over the period of s.udy (1930-1987) which is.s.atis.ically s.gnificant at les. than 5%level. The increas.s.noticed during different periods.varied from 30 to 109%. The increas. noticed during the period (1930-1938) and (1973-1974) was.maximum (109%). The Angs.rom turbidity coefficient als. s.owed s.s.ematic increas.s.during the period of s.udy, which is.cons.s.ent. The diurnal curve of the atmos.heric electric field at the s.ation by and large, s.owed a double os.illation, which is.generally obs.rved in the conlinental environments.

An examination of decay and growth rates.of electric field near the ground during total s.lar eclips. of 16 February 1980 was.made to s.udy the electrical relaxation time and conductivity at Raichur. The values.obtained i. e., 1320 s.conds.and 67.1163× 10-16 mhos.m-1 of the two parameters.were in fair agreement with the reported ones.at the rural locations.

s.a s.rface electric field obs.rvations.off the coas. from Goa (15°25'N, 73°47'E) to Madras.(13°04'N, 80°15'E) around s.i Lanka, in a dis.ance range 25-135 km from coas., during 9-20 May 1983 were taken. In this.paper we have examined the diurnal variation of electric field in the Arabian s.a, Indian Ocean and Bay of Bengal regions.covered during the cruis. of the res.arch s.ip ORV Gaves.ani. An as.ect of electric field dependence on coas.al dis.ance and Aitken Nuclei concentration has.als. been s.udied. An attempt to examine the latitude dependence of field was.als. made. Res.lts.obtained in the above s.udies.are pres.nted and compared with thos. obtained els.where.
