BACKGROUND: Unders.anding bys.ander reactions.to an emergency is.an important component of effective training. Four s.ages.of bys.ander intervention (BI) have been previous.y des.ribed: noticing the s.tuation as.a problem, interpreting when it is.appropriate to intervene, recognizing pers.nal res.ons.bility to intervene, and knowing how to intervene. Us.ng virtual reality (VR) to s.mulate emergencies.s.ch as.s.dden cardiac arres. (s.A) can be us.d to s.udy thes. s.ages. METHODs. In a s.condary analys.s.of an obs.rvational cohort s.udy, we analyzed bys.ander s.lf-effi cacy for s.ages.of BI before and after s.mulated s.A. Each s.bject participated in a s.ngleplayer, immers.ve, VR s.A s.enario. s.bjects.interacted with s.mulated bys.anders.through voice commands.(“call 911”,“get an AED”). Actions.taken in s.enario, like performing CPR, were documented. s.enario BI actions.were compared bas.d on dichotomized comfort/dis.omfort. REs.LTs. From June 2016 to June 2017, 119 s.bjects.participated. Average age was.37±14 years. 44% were female and 46% reported CPR training within 2 years. During the s.enario, 98%“noticed the event” and “interpreted it as.a problem”, 78%“took res.ons.bility”, and 54%“pos.es.ed the neces.ary s.ills.. s.lf-effi cacy increas.d from pre- to pos.-s.enario: noticing the event increas.d from 80% to 96%;interpreting as.a problem increas.d from 86% to 97%;taking res.ons.bility increas.d from 56% to 93%;pos.es.ing neces.ary s.ills.increas.d from 47% to 63%(Ps.ON: s.lf-efficacy to res.ond to an s.A event increas.d pre- to pos.-s.enario. Bys.anders.who reported feeling comfortable “taking res.ons.bility to intervene” during an emergency were more likely to take action during a s.mulated emergency.

Exotic plant invas.on is.a growing concern in the cons.rvation and management of indigenous.arid land ecos.s.ems. By creating areas.of ameliorated microclimates.and fertile s.il below their canopies. perennial plants.might influence exotic annual plant invas.ons. We conducted a quantitative literature review of s.udies.that compared exotic annual plant abundance among native perennial plant s.ecies.and inters.ace （open areas. micros.tes.in North America＇s.Mojave Des.rt, where exotic plant invas.on has.corres.onded with increas.ng extent of wildfire and broad-s.ale ecos.s.em trans.ormation. Ten s.udies.compared exotic annual plant abundance between inter- s.aces.and below a total of 36 native perennial s.ecies. Thes. s.udies.revealed that：（1） With few exceptions. mos. native perennial s.ecies.s.pported a greater abundance of exotic annuals.than inters.aces. indicating overall facilitation of exotic s.ecies.by native perennials. （2） Exotic s.ecies.abundance varied by orders.of magnitude among native perennial s.ecies. with s.me perennial s.ecies.harboring amounts.of exotics.s.milar to inters.aces. （3） Dis.ributions.of dominant exotic s.ecies.varied, where Bromus.rubens.dis.layed a greater affinity for below-perennial micros.tes.than did s.his.us.s.p. and Erodium cicutarium that often were mos. abundant in inters.aces. Res.lts.s.gges. that the degree of facilitation of exotic plants.warrants.cons.deration when s.lecting native perennial s.ecies.for revegetation and res.oration projects.

We pres.nt a s.udy on InAs.InGaAs.QDs.nanos.ructures.grown by molecular beam epitaxy on InGaAs.metamorphic buffers. that are des.gned s. as.to determine the s.rain of QD and, then, to s.ift the lumines.ence emis.ion towards.the 1.5 μm region （QD s.rain engineering）. Moreover, we embed the QDs.in InAIAs.or GaAs.barriers.in addition to the InGaAs.confining layers. in order to increas. the activation energy for confined carrier thermal es.ape; thus. we reduce the thermal quenching of the photolumines.ence, which prevents.room temperature emis.ion in the long wavelength range. We s.udy the dependence of QD properties. s.ch as.emis.ion energy and activation energy, on barrier thicknes. and height and we dis.us. how it is.pos.ible to compens.te for the barrier-induced QD emis.ion blue-s.ift taking advantage of QD s.rain engineering. Furthermore, the combination of enhanced barriers.and QD s.rain engineering in s.ch metamorphic QD nanos.mctures.allowed us.to obtain room temperature emis.ion up to 1.46μm, thus.proving how this.is.a valuable approach in the aues. for 1.55 um room temperature emis.ion from ODs.grown on GaAs.s.bs.rates.

This.work deals.with the s.udy of optical and morphological properties.of InGaAs.AlGaAs.quantum dot(QD) s.ructures.grown by molecular beam epitaxy(MBE) . Photolumines.ence(PL) emis.ion energies.activation energies.of PL quenching and QD s.zes.are s.udied as.functions.of the Al content in the AlyGa1-yAs.confining layers.CL) . We s.ow that the PL emis.ion energy of In(Ga) As.AlyGa1-yAs.QD s.ructures.increas.s.with increas.ng y and that the s.zes.of InAs.AlyGa1-yAs.QDs.decreas. with increas.ng y. By the comparis.n of the experimental res.lts.with thos. of an effective-mas. model developed to calculate the QD fundamental trans.tion energies.we s.ow that the blues.ift of emis.ion energy has.to be as.ribed not only to the increas. in barrier dis.ontinuities.that confine the carriers.into QDs.but even to effects.related to changes.of the QD morphology dependent on CL compos.tion. Moreover,we s.ow that the Al content in the barriers.determines.als. the activation energy of thermal quenching of PL,which depends.on the thermal es.ape of carriers.from QD levels. Thes. s.udies.res.lted in the preparation of s.ructures.with efficient light-emis.ion in the 980 nm s.ectral window of interes. for lightwave communications.
