Inverse Estimation on Trigger Factors of Simultaneous Slope Failures with Purification of Training Data Sets

This paper presents an procedure for purifying training data sets （i.e., past occurrences of slope failures） for inverse estimation on unobserved trigger factors of ＂different types of simultaneous slope failures＂. Due to difficulties in pixel-by-pixel observations of trigger factors, as one of the measures, the authors had proposed an inverse analysis algorithm on trigger factors based on SEM （structural equation modeling）. Through a measurement equation, the trigger factor is inversely estimated, and a TFI （trigger factor influence） map can be also produced. As a subsequence subject, a purification procedure of training data set should be constructed to improve the accuracy of TFI map which depends on the representativeness of given training data sets of different types of slope failures. The proposed procedure resamples the matched pixels between original groups of past slope failures （i.e., surface slope failures, deep-seated slope failures, landslides） and classified three groups by K-means clustering for all pixels corresponding to those slope failures. For all cases of three types of slope failures, the improvement of success rates with respect to resampled training data sets was confirmed. As a final outcome, the differences between TFI maps produced by using original and resampled training data sets, respectively, are delineated on a DIF map （difference map） which is useful for analyzing trigger factor influence in terms of ＂risky- and safe-side assessment＂ sub-areas with respect to ＂different types of simultaneous slope failures＂.

Power Output Improvement of PV Module for Agricultural Use by Using Inexpensive Sunlight Concentrator

PV modules are used as stand alone power sources for agricultural equipments such as lifting pumps in farms, where the power infrastructure is not yet improved. In order to expand the agricultural use of PV module, the cost of PV generation should be reduced. In this paper, the power output performance of a commercial PV module was improved by using a sunlight concentrator that could be assembled inexpensively and a simple sun-tracking method.

Synchronous Mucinous Borderline Tumor of the Ovary and Low-Grade Appendiceal Mucinous Neoplasm

We present a rare case of synchronous mucinous borderline tumor of the ovary and low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm (LAMN). We performed a left adnexectomy to diagnose the left ovarian borderline malignancy and an ileostomy because of the swollen appendix during the operation. It was diagnosed as left ovarian mucinous borderline malignancy and LAMN. LAMN causes peritoneal dissemination, ovarian metastasis, and peritoneal pseudomyxoma. The appendix and ovary are close to each other anatomically and can metastasize if there is a tumor in either. For ovarian mucinous tumors, it is necessary to search the gastrointestinal tract, especially the appendix, as the primary lesion. For appendix tumors, it is necessary to search for the ovary. Since LAMN may be associated with borderline ovarian malignancies, as in this case, there is a possibility of the duplication of tumors when searching for ovarian mucinous tumors as the primary tumor and if ovarian tumors are found. Since LAMN and mucinous ovarian tumors have similar histological features, immunohistochemical staining is useful for their differentiation because they show different immunostaining patterns.

Autonomic nervous system network and liver regeneration

To date, various signal transducers, cytokines, growth factors, and hormones have been reported to play an important role in homeostasis of various organs. Various cells and organs are involved in the hepatic regeneration process, which proceeds as a result of the coordination of many factors. While these factors are well known to be involved in the liver regeneration after the liver injury, however, as the details of such mechanisms have not been sufficiently elucidated, the practical applicability of hepatic regeneration based on the action of these and cytokines growth factors is still unclear. In terms of the involvement of the autonomic nervous system in hepatic regeneration, cell proliferation resulting from direct signal transduction to the liver has also been reported and recent studies focusing on the inter-organ communication via neural network opened a novel aspect of this field for therapeutic applicability. Therefore, the appropriate understanding of the relationship between autonomic neural network and liver regeneration through various organs including brain, afferent nerve, efferent nerve, etc. is essential. This mini-review explains the principle of neural system involved in the inter-organ communication and its contribution on the liver regeneration upon the liver injury reviewing recent progress in this field.

Reaction-Diffusion Algorithm for Quantitative Analysis of Periodic V-Shaped Bundles of Hair Cells in the Inner Ear

Columnar outer hair cells of the inner ear form V-shaped bundles, which are arranged in three rows in the cochlea. If the formation of these V-shaped bundles is disturbed, sensorineural hearing loss occurs. To quantify the distribution of V-shaped bundles, the use of a Turing-type reaction-diffusion (RD) system, including anisotropic diffusion, should be considered. We found that a periodic triangle pattern appears based on the anisotropy in the RD system. Then, using the proposed RD system, the image of the V-shaped bundle was examined. The results showed that the correlation between the RD pattern and V-shape bundles not only classifies the experimental result but also significantly differs in the number of directional changes in a set of V-shape bundle. Therefore, this process can help quantify the images of V-shaped bundles.
