Bovine Sperm Motility as Affected by Alpha Tocopherol and Ascorbic Acid during Storage

Our purpose was to determine the impact of ascorbic acid and α-tocopherol on bovine sperm motility following short-term storage or cryopreservation. Semen was collected from mature Angus bulls (n = 4). The experimental design was a randomized complete block, with bull serving as block, and treatments were structured as a 4 × 4 factorial with four concentrations of ascorbic acid (0, 5, 10, 20 mM) and four concentrations of α-tocopherol (0, 0.05, 0.5, 5 mM). Sperm motility characteristics were evaluated using computer assisted sperm analyses at 0, 4, and 8 h of incubation (39?c) and post-cryopreservation. Initial sperm motility was (79.6% ± 1.6) and decreased to (6.1% ± 1.6%) after cryopreservation. cryopreserved spermatozoa had lower (P P > 0.1) by α-tocopherol. Addition of 20 mM ascorbic acid to storage media decreased (P P α-tocopherol. Stepwise regression models predicted (P α-tocopherol was not beneficial for short-term storage of spermatozoa;however, our results were inconclusive with regards to inclusion of ascorbic acid and α-tocopherol in egg yolk-based cryopreservation media.

Gout is one of the most common forms of inflammatory arthritis, affecting over 8 million adults in the US. Individuals with gout are advised to avoid the habitual intake of purine-rich foods such as meats, seafood, purine-rich vegetables, and animal protein. An increased risk of developing or having subsequent attacks of gout is particularly associated with the consumption of seafood. However, clinical studies have shown that certain seafood and fish oil supplements that contain large amounts of omega-3 fatty acids provide important cardiovascular benefits. Individuals who might benefit from omega-3 fatty acid supplementation may therefore avoid fish oil products because they contain purines. currently, there are no distinct high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLc) methods available in the literature that are validated as per the International conference on Harmonisation (IcH) guidelines for the analysis of omega-3 fatty acid oils or fish oil containing products for purine content. A robust, fast, and efficient reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLc) method was developed and validated for the specific analysis of the naturally occurring purines guanine, purine, theobromine, and adenine. These purines are often found in fish oil and seafood. The analytical method reported herein quantifies all four purines in fish oil in about 20 minutes.

The human spinal column is a dynamic,segmented,bony,and cartilaginous structure that protects the neurologic system and simultaneously provides balance and *** with developmental disorders that affect the patterning or shape of the spine can be at risk of neurologic and other physiologic *** most common developmental disorder of the spine is scoliosis,a lateral deformity in the shape of the spinal *** may be part of the clinical spectrum that is observed in many developmental disorders,but typically presents as an isolated symptom in otherwise healthy adolescent *** idiopathic scoliosis(AIS)has defied understanding in part due to its genetic *** have come from recent genome-wide association studies(GWAS)and next generation sequencing(NGS)of human AIS cohorts,as well as investigations of animal *** studies have identified genetic associations with determinants of cartilage biogenesis and development of the intervertebral disc(IVD).current evidence suggests that a fraction of AIS cases may arise from variation in factors involved in the structural integrity and homeostasis of the cartilaginous extracellular matrix(EcM).Here,we review the development of the spine and spinal cartilages,the composition of the cartilage EcM,the so-called"matrisome"and its functions,and the players involved in the genetic architecture of *** also propose a molecular model by which the cartilage matrisome of the IVD contributes to AIS susceptibility.

Remote sensing is used in the Spatial Sciences Institute (SSI) across the full spectrum of the organization’s teaching and research initiatives. From undergraduate to graduate classes that utilize unmanned aerial systems (UAS) in data collection and graduate courses that incorporate remote sensing for a variety of applications, including Earth observation, to applied research via the Human Security and Geospatial Intelligence (HSGI) Lab projects and work being done with One World Terrain (OWT) at the Institute for creative Technologies (IcT) to build a fully geo-referenced 3D planetary model, SSI recognizes the need to educate students about remote sensing techniques. This paper discusses faculty involvement in conducting a pilot study for the catalina Island conservancy (cIc) using UAS to survey local bison and deer populations. The team utilized an autonomous fixed-wing UAS with a thermal payload to collect data for a semi-automated detection workflow integrated within a GIS successfully identifying both deer and bison. Additionally, graduate students participate in a weeklong experiential learning opportunity on catalina Island, cA during which they develop and conduct a research project integrating UAS and other remotely sensed data with primary data collection in a Geographic Information System (GIS). By extension, the Institute then reinforces that these educational opportunities, focused primarily on data acquisition, are instrumental in supporting the geographic information systems, science, and technology experiences in many diverse fields, including (but not limited to) human security, humanitarian relief, sustainable urban and rural planning, and public health.

Orthopedic clinicians frequently encounter patients with temporomandibular joint (TMJ) pain and associated sleep disordered breathing (SDB) that coexists with the patient’s orthopedic conditions. The systemic effects and associated comorbidities caused by TMJ and associated SDB are commonly not recognized as potential contributors to the patient’s long-term orthopedic outcome. This article describes a comprehensive and interdisciplinary medical dental treatment, which was able to successfully address patient’s severe chronic TMJ, head, neck and shoulder pain as well as other health concerns including SDB. Moreover, a new teledontic and telegnathic treatment protocol and principles utilizing total joint replacement for care of patients with chronic TMJ pain and SDB will be introduced describing a completed case.

Effect of copper on Growth characteristics and Disease control of the Recently Introduced <i>Guignardia citricarpa</i>on citrus in Florida

Guignardia citricarpa, the plant pathogenic fungus that causes citrus black spot, was recently introduced into the United States. The development of this disease in the presence of multiple applications of copper per year to manage citrus canker warrants an investigation into the effects of copper on growth of isolates of G. citricarpa from citrus in Florida. Guignardia citricarpa and G. mangiferae isolates, confirmed by internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequencing of ribosomal DNA and DNA homology, were inoculated on non-amended media and media amended with 50 and 500 μg·ml-1 copper sulfate. Radial colony growth was assessed over a 26 to 59 day period. copper reduced the growth of G. citricarpa isolates in media amended with 500 μg·ml-1 copper but had variable effects on radial growth in media amended with 50 μg·ml-1 copper. There was little effect of copper on the in vitro growth of G. mangiferae isolates. Field application of copper with and without an adjuvant for the control of citrus black spot was undertaken in a commercial grove in Florida in 2011. Spray applications were made on a 23.3 ± 4.7 day interval and fruit accessed between December 2011 and March 2012 for black spot symptoms. copper failed to reduce the proportion of fruit exhibiting symptoms compared to that of the controls.
