Glaucoma is one of the world’s most frequent visual impairment causes and leads to selective damage to retinal ganglion cells and their *** glaucoma’s most accepted risk factor is increased intraocular pressure(IOP),the mechanisms behind the disease have not been fully *** date,IOP lowering remains the gold standard;however,glaucoma patients may still lose vision regardless of effective IOP ***,the exclusive IOP control apparently is not enough to stop the disease progression,and developing new resources to protect the retina and optic nerve against glaucoma is a goal of vast clinical *** pharmacological treatments,environmental conditions have been shown to prevent neurodegeneration in the central nervous *** this review,we discuss current concepts on key pathogenic mechanisms involved in glaucoma,the effect of enriched environment on these mechanisms in different experimental models,as well as recent evidence supporting the preventive and therapeutic effect of enriched environment exposure against experimental glaucomatous ***,we postulate that stimulating vision may become a non-invasive and rehabilitative therapy that could be eventually translated to the human disease,preventing glaucoma-induced terrible sequelae resulting in permanent visual disability.

Diabetic retinopathy is a leading cause of acquired blindness, and it is the most common ischemic disorder of the retina. Available treatments are not very effective. efforts to inhibit diabetic reti- nopathy have focused either on highly specific therapeutic approaches for pharmacologic targets or using genetic approaches to change expression of certain enzymes. However, it might be wise to choose innovative treatment modalities that act by multiple potential mechanisms. The resis- tance to ischemic injury, or ischemic tolerance, can be transiently induced by prior exposure to a non-injurious preconditioning stimulus. A complete functional and histologic protection against retinal ischemic damage can be achieved by previous preconditioning with non-damaging isch- emia. In this review, we will discuss evidence that supports that ischemic conditioning could help avert the dreaded consequences that results from retinal diabetic damage.

The association between Tai Chi exercise and safe driving performance among older adults： An observational study

Background: Age-related cognitive and physical decline can impair safe driving performance. Tai Chi exercise benefits cognitive and physical function and may influence safe driving performance in older adults. The primary aim of this observational study was to compare cognitive processes and physical function related to safe driving performance among older adult Tai Chi practitioners to normative reference *** aims were to examine relationships between Tai Chi exercise habits, cognitive processes, and physical function related to safe driving performance and to explore potential predictors of safe driving ***: The Driving Health Inventory, the Driving Scenes Test, other driving-related cognitive and physical measures, and self-reported measures including the Mindful Attention Awareness Scale(MAAS) and the Vitality Plus Scale(VPS) were collected from current Tai Chi practitioners(n = 58; age 72.9 ± 5.9 years, mean ± SD) with median >3 years Tai Chi ***: Compared to normative reference values, participants performed better on numerous cognitive measures including the Driving Scenes Test(p e navigation(p = 0.017, d = 0.27), the Useful Field of View Test(p easures including the Rapid Walk Test(p e Right Foot Tapping Test,(p ed higher than normative reference values on MAAS and VPS(p espectively). Statistically significant correlations were found between several study measures. The digit span backward test was the strongest predictor of safe driving performance(β = 0.34,p = 0.009).Conclusion: Tai Chi exercise has the potential to impact cognitive processes and physical function related to safe driving performance. Further study using randomized controlled trials, structured Tai Chi exercise doses, and driving simulator or on-road driving performance as outcome measures

Orthorhombic molybdenum trioxide(α-MoO_(3)) electrode material experiences severe capacity fading and poor cycling stability in aqueous *** investigated the charge-storage performance of α-MoO_(3) electrode in aluminium trifluoromethanesulfonate(Al(OTf)_(3))-based salt-in-water electrolyte(SiWe) and water-in-salt electrolyte(WiSe).It was found that α-MoO_(3) electrode exhibits significantly different cycling stabilities in both electrolytes with capacity retentions of 8% using the former and87% using the *** is because α-MoO_(3) electrode maintains its crystal structure upon cycling in WiSe,but experiences substantial structural collapses and partial dissolution upon cycling in *** behaviour was inferred from both operando electrogravimetry and ex situ *** results suggest that the predominant charge-storage mechanism in a-MoO_(3) electrode using WiSe is the intercalation of protons produced from electrolyte hydrolysis with some contribution from surface pseudocapacitance enabled by Al3+ions.A two-volt full cell fabricated from α-MoO_(3) electrode as anode and copper hexacyanoferrate(CuHCF) electrode as cathode using WiSe delivers volumetric and gravimetric energies of 10.4 Wh/L and 26.5 Wh/kg,respectively,with 78% capacity retention after 2500 *** study provides an insightful understanding of the electrochemical performance of α-MoO_(3) electrode in Al(OTf)_(3)-based electrolytes.

Synchronous waving in fiddler crabs: a review

Many animals that use acoustic communication synchronize their mate attract!on signals: individuals precisely time their calls to overlap those of their neighbors. In contrast, synchrony in the mate attraction displays of species with visual/motion-based signals is rare. It has only been documented in five species of fiddler crabs. In all of them, small groups of males wave their single large claw in close synchrony. Here, I review what we know about synchrony in fiddler crabs, comparing the five species with each other to determine whether similar mechanisms and functions are comm on to all. I also propose future research questions that, if answered, would shed light on synchronous behavior in both visual and acoustic signallers.
