Objective:To evaluate short-term markers of outcome in diabetic macular edema(DME).Methods:Prospective interventional case series included 122 eyes of 122 patients with recently diagnosed *** were treated with a 3-monthly loading dose of ranibizumab or aflibercept and pro re nata *** enhanced deep imaging SD-OCT high resolution scans were used to measure subfoveal choroidal thickness(SFCT)and central retinal thickness(CRT).Anatomic(10%CRT decrease)and functional responses(best corrected visual acuity,BCVA gain≥5 letters)were assessed at 3 months and 6 months using univariate and multivariate *** tested were gender,duration of diabetes,HbA1c,hypertension,CRT,SFCT,BCVA,ellipsoid zone(EZ)status,subfoveal neuroretinal detachment(SND),anti-VEGF used and laser naivety.A logistic regression model was applied to find independent markers ***:BCVA increased,CRT and SFCT decreased at 3 months and 6 *** metabolic control(p=0.003),intact baseline EZ(p=0.030),EZ re-grading at 3 M(p<0.001)and laser naivety(p=0.001)were associated with better functional *** multivariate linear regression model showed that baseline SND and CRT are predictors of anatomic response,while lower baseline BCVA and intact EZ are predictors of functional ***:The presence of SND predicts anatomic response only,while an intact EZ is critical to achieve a good functional outcome in DME.

AIM: To study the diagnosis of He/icobacterpy/ori(H pylori) infection through the determination of serum levels of anti-H pylori IgG and IgA antibodies, and the levels of anti- H pylori IgA antibodies in duodenal fluid. METHODS: Data were collected from 93 patients submitted to upper digestive endoscopy due to dyspeptic symptoms. The patients were either negative (group A) or positive (group B) to Hpyloriby means of both histological detection and urease tests. Before endoscopy, peripheral blood was collected for the investigation of anti-H pylori IgG and IgA antibodies. To perform the urease test, biopsies were obtained from the gastric antrum. For the histological evaluation, biopsies were collected from the gastric antrum (greater and lesser curvatures) and the gastric body. Following this, duodenal fluid was collected from the first and second portions of the duodenum. For the serological assaying of anti-Hpy/oriIgG and IgA, and anti-Hpy/oriIgA in duodenal fluids, the ELISA method was utilized. RESULTS: The concentration of serum IgG showed sensitivity of 64.0%, specificity of 83.7%, positive predictive value of 82.0%, negative predictive value of 66.6% and accuracy of 73.1% for the diagnosis of H pyloriinfection. For the same purpose, serum IgA showed sensitivity of 72.0%, specificity of 65.9%, positive predictive value of 72.0%, negative predictive value of 67.4% and accuracy of 69.8%. If the serological tests were considered together, i.e. when both were positive or negative, the accuracy was 80.0%, sensitivity was 86.6%, specificity was 74.2%, positive predictive value was 74.2% and negative predictive value was 86.6%. When values obtained in the test for detecting IgA in the duodenal fluid were analyzed, no significant difference (P=0.43) was observed between the values obtained from patients with or without Hpyloriinfection. The use of an internal control in a multiplex-PCR assay for sex determination of In Vitro-produced bovine embryos was evaluated in biopsies of groups of 54 fresh and 44 frozen embryos. The internal controls used were the primers BOV 1 and BOV 2, which amplify a product with 626 base pairs (bp) of bovine mitochondrial DNA ND5 gene. The primers BRY.4aF and BRY.4aR were used for bovine Y chromosome sequence amplification. The specificity of multiplex- PCR reactions realized in biopsies corresponding to about 20% of each fresh embryo (10 male and 10 female) by means of confirming the sexing in the remaining embryo content (~80%) presented 100% specificity. Amplicons of the internal control and Y chromosome were both amplified until dilution corresponding to 6.25% of total extracted DNA from a male embryo. Sex determination was possible in 53 (98.1%) fresh embryos and 40 (90.9%) frozen embryos. The products related to the Y chromosome and mitochondrial DNA were simultaneously amplified in 34 (63%) fresh embryos and 27 (61.4%) frozen embryos, showing a male embryo. The female sex, distinguished by internal control amplification only, was detected in 19 (35.2%) and 13 (29.5%) biopsies, respectively, of fresh and frozen embryos. In one (1.8%) and four (9.1%) biopsies of fresh and frozen embryos, respectively, neither product was amplified, most likely due to the absence of embryonic cells or the presence of embryonic cells going through apoptosis. The multiplex-PCR assay developed in this work showed avoided the limitation of a lack of an internal standard, and was also sensitive, specific, and efficient in reaction failure identification. This technique shows great potential for use on a commercial scale in routine sex determination of In Vitro-produced embryos.

Introduction: The more intense and early development of obesity, the greater the risk of persistence and severity of comorbidities, such as cardiovascular disease. There is evidence that high serum concentrations of lipoprotein (a) [Lp (a)] and C-reactive protein (CRP) are associated with increased risk of cardiovascular diseases. Objectives: To verify the change in the levels of Lp (a) and ultrasensitive CRP and its relationship with the nutritional status of adolescents. Methods: Cross-sectional study conducted with overweight children and adolescents between August 2012 and July 2013 attended at the Center for Childhood Obesity. The measurement of inflammatory markers was performed in the Clinical Laboratory of the State University of Paraiba. Comparison of sociodemographic variables by sex was tested by chi-square;the association of the risk markers according to age was evaluated by Student’s t test, and the body mass index by analysis of Pearson correlation. The normality distribution was tested by the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test. Confidence interval of 95% was adopted in all analyses. The study was approved by the Ethics Research Committee of UEPB (CAAE 0256.***.133.000-11). Results: Of the 133 children and adolescents evaluated, 60.9% were female and 72.2% were adolescents. Body Mass Index, lipo (a) and u-CRP showed statistically significant association with age (p < 0.01). There was a positive ascending correlation (r = 0.273, p < 0.01) of u-CRP with BMI, which was not verified for lipoprotein (a). Conclusion: As a cardiovascular risk marker already established in literature, the association of u-CRP with the nutritional status of adolescents, proportionally, shows the need for losing weight in this population, especially at early age. A deeper and long-term investigation should be carried out for more effective and consistent contribution to public health.

Objective: To evaluate the association of socio-demographic and clinical characteristics, and risk factors with occurrence of pressure ulcers in institutionalized elderly people. Method: This cross-sectional, analytical study, in quantitative approach, performed from the database analysis linked to the project “Pressure Ulcer in institutionalized elderly people: Association of incidence with the risk factors to functional and nutritional assessment” developed in six long-stay institutions for the elderly people in João Pessoa. Data were analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 20.0. Associations were made through chi square test and Odds Ratio. Results: The clinical conditions of significant associations with the occurrence of pressure ulcers were the variables neurological disorders (p = 0.011) and visual impairment (p = 0.005). As for risk factors, the most important was fecal incontinence (p Conclusion: The analysis of the associations pointed out problems that require intervention in order to prevent health implications of the elderly people and to minimize the risk and occurrence of this injury.
