Overexpression of tonoplast Ca^(2+)-ATPase in guard cells synergistically enhances stomatal opening and drought tolerance

Stomata play a crucial role in plants by controlling water status and responding to drought ***,simultaneously improving stomatal opening and drought tolerance has proven to be a significant *** address this issue,we employed the OnGuard quantitative model,which accurately represents the mechanics and coordination of ion transporters in guard *** the guidance of OnGuard,we successfully engineered plants that overexpressed the main tonoplast Ca^(2+)-ATPase gene,ACA11,which promotes stomatal opening and enhances plant ***,these transgenic plants also exhibited improved drought tolerance due to reduced water loss through their ***,OnGuard assisted us in understanding the mechanism behind the unexpected stomatal behaviors observed in the ACA11 overexpressing *** study revealed that the overexpression of ACA11 facilitated the accumulation of Ca^(2+)in the vacuole,thereby influencing Ca^(2+)storage and leading to an enhanced Ca^(2+)elevation in response to abscisic *** regulatory cascade finely tunes stomatal responses,ultimately leading to enhanced drought *** findings underscore the importance of tonoplast Ca^(2+)-ATPase in manipulating stomatal behavior and improving drought ***,these results highlight the diverse functions of tonoplast-localized ACA11 in response to different conditions,emphasizing its potential for future applications in plant enhancement.

Long-lived Paleotethyan pelagic remnant inside Shan-Thai Block:Evidence from radiolarian biostratigraphy

Newly identified radiolarians from ribbon chert in the Mae Hong Son-Mae Sariang area, northwestern Thailand covered Early Carboniferous, Late Permian, and Middle-Late Triassic in age, which indicate that there was a pelagic basin during the Late Paleozoic and Triassic in this region together with the published radiolarian biostratigraphic data. This basin is joined with the Chiang Dao and Changning-Menglian oceanic basins, which represent the main oceanic basin of Paleotethyan Archipelago Ocean. The main oceanic basin was situated in the traditional “Shan-Thai Block”. Therefore, “the Shan-Thai Block” was not a single block during that stage, but composed of the Paleotethyan Ocean and two continental terranes that affiliated to Gondwana and Cathysian domains respectively. Bifunctional gap-plasmon metasurfaces for visible light: polarization-controlled unidirectional surface plasmon excitation and beam steering at normal incidence

Integration of multiple diversified functionalities into a single,planar and ultra-compact device has become an emerging research area with fascinating possibilities for realization of very dense integration and miniaturization in photonics that requires addressing formidable challenges,particularly for operation in the visible *** we design,fabricate and experimentally demonstrate bifunctional gap-plasmon metasurfaces for visible light,allowing for simultaneous polarization-controlled unidirectional surface plasmon polariton(SPP)excitation and beam steering at normal *** designed bifunctional metasurfaces,consisting of anisotropic gap-plasmon resonator arrays,produce two different linear phase gradients along the same direction for respective linear polarizations of incident light,resulting in distinctly different functionalities realized by the same *** proof-of-concept fabricated metasurfaces exhibit efficient(425%on average)unidirectional(extinction ratio 420 dB)SPP excitation within the wavelength range of 600–650 nm when illuminated with normally incident light polarized in the direction of the phase *** the same time,broadband(580–700 nm)beam steering(30.6°–37.9°)is realized when normally incident light is polarized perpendicularly to the phase gradient *** bifunctional metasurfaces developed in this study can enable advanced research and applications related to other distinct functionalities for photonics integration.

Evolutionary Lineages and Functional Diversification of Plant Hexokinases

Sequencing data from 10 species show that a plant hexokinase （HXK） family contains 5-11 genes. Functionally, a given family can include metabolic catalysts, glucose signaling proteins, and non-catalytic, apparent regulatory enzyme homologs. This study has two goals. The first aim is to develop a predictive method to determine which HXK proteins within a species have which type of function. The second aim is to determine whether HXK-dependent glucose signaling proteins occur among more primitive plants, as well as among angiosperms. Using a molecular phylogeny ap- proach, combined with selective experimental testing, we found that non-catalytic HXK homologs might occur in all plants, including the relatively primitive Selaginella moellendorffi. We also found that different lineages of angiosperm HXKs have apparent conserved features for catalytic activity and for sub-cellular targeting. Most higher-plant HXKs are expressed predominantly at mitochondria, with HXKs of one lineage occurring in the plastid, and HXKs of one monocot lineage occurring in the cytosol. Using protoplast transient expression assays, we found that HXK glucose signaling pro- teins occur likely in all higher plants and in S. moellendorffi as well. Thus, the use of glucose by plant HXK isoforms in metabolism and/or as a regulatory metabolite occurs as widespread, conserved processes.

Antihepatotoxic Effect of Feronia Limonia Fruit against Carbon Tetrachloride Induced Hepatic Damage in Albino Rats

Feronia limonia Swingle, though mentioned as a high utility medicinal plant in Ayurveda for the treat-ment of liver disorders, but has no scientific investigations. Therefore, the present study was undertaken to investigate the hepatoprotective activity of extracts of Feronia limonia fruit on albino rat liver, damage induced by single dose of carbon-tetrachloride (1.5 ml/kg, p.o.). The oral administration of extracts (500 mg/kg, p.o.) for 7 days has shown significant hepatoprotective action. There is reduction in the elevated levels of serum enzymes such SGOT, SGPT, ALP and Serum bilirubin and elevation in level of GSH, GPX,GLY and total protein in Feronia limonia protected rats.

Dysfunctional stem and progenitor cells impair fracture healing with age

Successful fracture healing requires the simultaneous regeneration of both the bone and vasculature;mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are directed to replace the bone tissue, while endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) form the new vasculature that supplies blood to the fracture site. In the elderly, the healing process is slowed, partly due to decreased regenerative function of these stem and progenitor cells. MSCs from older individuals are impaired with regard to cell number, proliferative capacity, ability to migrate, and osteochondrogenic differentiation potential. The proliferation, migration and function of EPCs are also compromised with advanced age. Although the reasons for cellular dysfunction with age are complex and multidimensional, reduced expression of growth factors, accumulation of oxidative damage from reactive oxygen species, and altered signaling of the Sirtuin-1 pathway are contributing factors to aging at the cellular level of both MSCs and EPCs. Because of these geriatric-specific issues, effective treatment for fracture repair may require new therapeutic techniques to restore cellular function. Some suggested directions for potential treatments include cellular therapies, pharmacological agents, treatments targeting age-related molecular mechanisms, and physical therapeutics. Advanced age is the primary risk factor for a fracture, due to the low bone mass and inferior bone quality associated with aging;a better understanding of the dysfunctional behavior of the aging cell will provide a foundation for new treatments to decrease healing time and reduce the development of complications during the extended recovery from fracture healing in the elderly.

Some Studies on Wear and Corrosion Properties of Al5083/Al<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub>/Graphite Hybrid Composites

Advanced technology has put an increasing demand on the composite materials, particularly more in the areas of dynamic structures. Among the several types of aluminum alloys being used, Al5000 series are widely used in marine and aerospace applications due to their superior corrosion resistance, excellent formability and good welding characteristics. Al5083, a non-heat treatable high Mg-Al wrought alloy, is extensively used for the marine applications. Hence, an attempt has been made in the proposed work to study the effects of Graphite (Gr) and Aluminium oxide (Al2O3) on aluminum hybrid composites involving both hard and soft reinforcements on wear and corrosion properties. The synthesis of hybrid metal matrix composite used in the present study has been carried out by stir casting method. The effects of reinforcement, time duration and particle size on prepared samples of composites have been studied on slurry erosive wear. The static and accelerated corrosion tests have been performed and the microhardness of the developed composites was also investigated. The experimental results on Al5083-Al2O3-Gr hybrid composites revealed that the addition of reinforcement improves the hardness and reduces corrosion and wear rates.
