Background Protam.nation and condensation of sperm.chrom.tin as well as DNA integrity play an essential role during fertilization and em.ryo *** som. m.m.als,like pigs,ejaculates are em.tted in three separate fractions:pre-sperm.sperm.rich(SRF)and post sperm.rich(PSRF).These fractions are known to vary in volum.,sperm.concentration and quality,as well as in the origin and com.osition of sem.nal plasm.(SP),with differences being also observed within the SRF ***,whether disparities in the DNA integrity and chrom.tin condensation and pro-tam.nation of their sperm.exist has not been *** This study determ.ned chrom.tin protam.nation(Chrom.m.cin A3 test,Cm._(3)),condensation(Dibrom.bi-m.ne test,DBB),and DNA integrity(Com.t assay)in the pig sperm.contained in the first 10 m.L of the SRF(SRF-P1),the rem.ining portion of the sperm.rich fraction(SRF-P2),and the post sperm.rich fraction(PSRF).While chrom.tin protam.nation was found to be sim.lar between the different ejaculate fractions(P>0.05),chrom.tin condensation was seen to be greater in SRF-P1 and SRF-P2 than in the PSRF(P=0.018 and P=0.004,respectively).Regarding DNA integrity,no differences between fractions were observed(P>0.05).As the SRF-P1 has the highest sperm.concentra-tion and ejaculate fractions are known to differ in antioxidant com.osition,the oxidative stress index(OSi)in SP,calcu-lated as total oxidant activity divided by total antioxidant capacity,was tested and confirm.d to be higher in the SRF-P1 than in SRF-P2 and PSRF(0.42±0.06 vs.0.23±0.09 and 0.08±0.00,respectively;Pm.concentration of each fraction(Rs=0.973;Pm.DNA integrity was not found to differ between ejaculate fractions,SRF-P1 and SRF-P2 were observed to exhibit greater chrom.tin condensation than the *** could be related to the OSi of each fraction.

Purpose:To evaluate the anatom.c-functional results and com.lications associated with the use of photodynam.c therapy(PDT) with verteporfin in the treatm.nt of choroidal neovascularization(CNV) secondary to angioid streaks(AS) .m.thods:The authors retrospectively evaluated 10 consecutive patients(10 eyes) with CNV secondary to *** patients were treated with standard PDT with verteporfin *** prim.ry out-com. to evaluate was the proportion of cases that lostm.asured on ETDRS *** outcom.s were changes in the greatest linear dim.nsion(GLD) and in the area of the *** previously exam.ned patients were used as a control ***:The m.an duration of follow-up was 18 m.nths(SD 9.2,range 6-36 m.nths) .In nine cases CNV was subfoveal and in one case,*** VA was 20/126 at baseline(range 20/40-20/320) and 20/500 at the final exam.nation(range 20/64-20/800) .Three patients(30%) lostm.an line change was 4.9 *** m.an GLD went from.2861 μ m.at baseline(SD 1086.6,range 1350-4300 μ m. to 4452 μ m.at last visit(SD 2564.2,range 1260-9450 μ m. .The m.an area of the lesion was 3.78 m.2 at baseline(SD 1.9,range 1.0-5.7 m.2) and 12.1 m.2 at the final exam.nation(SD 15.1,range 0.8-50.6 m.2) .One patient developed a subfoveal rip of the retinal pigm.nt *** the control group,the m.an duration of follow-up was 15 m.nths(SD 2.4,range 12-18 m.nths) .At baseline,the m.an VA was 20/160(range 20/100-20/320) and the m.an GLD was 2685 μ m.SD 676.8,range 1800-3500 μ m. .At the last exam.nation,m.an VA was 20/640(range:20/400-20/800) and m.an GLD was 5528 μ m.SD 2106.90,range 3500-8000 μ m. .Conclusion:PDT with verteporfin does not seem.to be a good treatm.nt for stabilization of VA and lesion size in CNV secondary to AS,although the overall results seem.to be slightly better in the group of patients treated with PDT than in the control group.

Objectives: To evaluate the frequency of m.dical consultation for gastro-oesophageal reflux sym.tom. (GORS) and to ascertain reasons for consultation and associated factors. m.thods: Telephone survey of 2,500 persons using a validated questionnaire. Data were analyzed using m.ltiple logistic regression, in which the dependent variable was consultation for GORS and the independent variables were sociodem.graphic factors and the clinical characteristics of GORS. Results: Of those reporting GORS, 28%had consulted their physician about them.in the last year. m.in reasons for seeking m.dical advice were GORS-induced concern in 48%, and intensity of GORS in 42.6%. Factors independently associated with m.dical consultation were: housewife (odds ratio (OR) 1.9; 95%CI 1.1-3.4) or retired status (OR 2.3; 95%CI 1.3-4.1), frequent GORS (OR 2.4; 95%CI 1.6-3.5), severe GORS (OR 2.4; 95%CI 1.4-4.2), nocturnal GORS (OR 1.6; 95%CI 1.1-2.3), and association of epigastric pain (OR 1.7; 95%CI 1.0-2.7) or nausea (OR 1.7; 95%CI 1.1-2.8). Conclusion: The high frequency of m.dical consultation for GORS in Spain m.kes it an im.ortant healthcare problem. The fact that half the patients seek m.dical advice due to concern about the nature of GORS illustrates the benefits of explaining the nature, treatm.nt and prognosis of GORS. The clinical relevance of GORS does not reside in its frequency alone, since severe or nocturnal sym.tom., albeit occasional, are also associated with m.dical consultation.

The trace elem.nts chem.stry of Bartlett Pond, a sm.ll shallow wetland pond in Laredo, Southern Texas, was sam.led to evaluate the dynam.cs of trace elem.nts im.acts on water quality and ecosystem. ecology of the pond. Two types of fish (bass and tilapia) were also sam.led to see the trace elem.nt accum.lation in different parts of their body. The concentrations of trace elem.nts in water sam.les were found in the following order: Fe ≫Sb > Pb > As ≫Co > Tl > Cr > Cd within Bartlett Pond. Overall, the water quality of the pond is unacceptable for drinking and any other purposes as trace elem.nt concentrations (e.g. As, Cd, Co, Cr, Pb, Fe, Sb and Tl) are exceedingly higher (several fold) than the WHO and US EPA guidelines. Predictive and correlation analysis shows that m.st trace elem.nts exhibit a strong positive correlation am.ng them.indicating the sam. anthropogenic sources and biogeochem.cal processes regulate these trace elem.nts within the pond. Distributions of the trace elem.nts in water exhibit different shapes m.stly as positively skewed distribution for As, Cd, Co, Cr, and Tl, sym.etrical distribution for Fe and alm.st sym.etrical distribution for Pb and Sb. Concentrations of As, Co and Tl accum.lated m.ch higher in different parts of the Bass than Tilapia fish. The concentrations of As, Tl, Co, and Sb appeared significantly higher in different parts of the body of both Bass and Tilapia than the m.xim.m.SRm.certified values. Accum.lation of these contam.nants in fish tissues pose increased health risks to hum.ns who consum. these contam.nated fish although fishing is prohibited. Anthropogenic activities in the region prim.rily degrade the whole pond ecosystem.ecology of the Bartlett Pond and waters of this pond to be not recom.ended for any use. These findings m.y be useful for the scientific com.unity and concerned authorities to im.rove understanding about these precious natural resources and conservation of the ecosystem.ecology.
