Pathology and genetic connectedness of the mangrove crab (Aratus pisonii) – a foundation for understanding mangrove disease ecology

Mangrove forests are productive ecosystems,acting as a sink for CO_(2),a habitat for a diverse array of terrestrial and marine species,and as a natural barrier to coastline *** species that reside within mangrove ecosystems have important roles to play,including litter decomposition and the recycling of *** are important detritivores in such ecosystems and understanding their limitations(***)is an important endeavour when considering the larger ecological services *** and metagenomics were used to identify viral(Nudiviridae,Alphaflexiviridae),bacterial(Paracoccus sp.,'Candidatus Gracilibacteria sp.’,and Pseudoalteromonas sp.),protozoan,fungal,and metazoan diversity that compose the symbiome of the mangrove crab,Aratus *** symbiotic groups were observed at varying prevalence under histology:nudivirus(6.5%),putative gut epithelial virus(3.2%),ciliated protozoa(35.5%),gonad fungus(3.2%),gill ectoparasitic metazoan(6.5%).Metagenomic analysis of one specimen exhibiting a nudivirus infection provided the complete host mitochondrial genome(15,642 bp),nudivirus genome(108,981 bp),and the genome of a Cassava common mosaic virus isolate(6387 bp).Our phylogenetic analyses group the novel nudivirus with the Gammanudivirus and protein similarity searches indicate that Carcinus maenas nudivrius is the most similar to the new *** mitochondrial genome were used to mine short fragments used in population genetic studies to gauge an idea of diversity in this host species across the USA,Caribbean,and central and southern *** study report several new symbionts based on their pathology,taxonomy,and genomics(where available)and discuss what effect they may have on the crab *** role of mangrove crabs from a OneHealth perspective were explored,since their pathobiome includes cassava-infecting ***,given that this species is abundant in mangrove forests and now boasts a well-described pathogen prof

Pyogenic liver abscess:An audit of 10 years’experience

We very much appreciate each of the three sets of comments on our *** manuscript argued thatthe nutritional epidemiology research area,which is soimportant to worldwide public health,is burdened withchallenges in estimating dietary intakes,both shortterm intakes and intakes over the years or decades thatmay be relevant to chronic disease *** nutritional epidemiology literature having chronic diseaseoutcomes mostly relies on dietary self-report *** few dietary variables having an established objective measure(biomarker),comparison with self-reportdata suggests that the data include not only a large‘noise’component,which available statistical methods can typically accommodate,but frequently also alarge systematic bias component that,for example,maydepend on such study subject body mass index(BMI),age and ethnicity,among other *** is the needto address this systematic bias component of dietaryintake assessment that stimulates our call for additionalreliance on biomarkers,for additional biomarker development,and for the development of novel and flexible statistical methods for use in disease associationanalyses.

Parallel personal measurements of diesel engine exhaust and crystalline silica using dual sampling port

Diesel engine exhaust(DEE) and crystalline silica exposures occur simultaneously in the mining industry,and occupational sampling campaigns can be time-and cost-consuming. The authors evaluated a dualport system for simultaneous sampling of DEE and crystalline silica in laboratory and field *** tests evaluated the operation of pumps during 8 h sampling and the intensity of the flow variation for various filter loading conditions and for different modes of operation. Field validation was performed in an underground mine. Pumps operated in constant flow or constant pressure *** in constant flow mode showed that when the flowrate increased on one side of the system, it decreased on the opposite side according to the loading intensity. Tests in constant pressure mode showed that flowrates systematically decreased when using loaded cassettes. However, the higher the backpressure setting, the lower the flow variation was. Flow variations during field tests were generally within the acceptable ±5% range. However, significant flow variations were identified in higher concentrations. A significant negative correlation was found between flowrate variation and total carbon concentration. While the majority of tests support the use of the dual-port for evaluating concomitant exposures, results highlight the possibility of filter overloading as a cause of flowrate changes.

Decomposition of juvenile-sized remains:a macro-and microscopic perspective

There is currently a dearth of research investigating the progression and rate of decomposition for juvenile *** is thought that juveniles and infants decompose at an increased rate relative to adults due simply to body mass and that skeletal preservation is commonly dependent on intrinsic levels of bone mineral density(BMD).This study investigates the environmental variables important in driving juvenile decomposition as well as examining if currently accepted methodology for quantifying adult decomposition can be applied to juvenile ***,histological analysis is undertaken to test the Histological Index(HI)as a semi-quantitative indicator of ***-five Sus scrofa ranging between 1.8 and 22.7 kg were deposited to simulate body mass of human infant and juvenile *** were deposited every season over two years in the southeastern US with five depositional types:bagged,blanket wrapped,and surface control foetal remains,surface,and buried juvenile *** were scored quantitatively throughout soft tissue *** study completion and skeletonization,a femur was selected from each set of remains for histological *** sections were assessed under standard brightfield light and scored using Oxford Histological Index(OHI).Results indicate that seasonal variation is an important factor to consider even when using a standardized time variable such as accumulated degree days(ADD),particularly variation in soil *** moisture was a consistent significant variable in the mixed effects *** pattern of decomposition using total body score(TBS)was similar to that observed by others prior to log transformation with a rapid incline early in decomposition with levelling *** correlation between time in days,ADD,and TBS was not as strong as those previously reported(R^(2)=0.317 and 0.499,respectively)suggesting that TBS as it is currently formulated cannot be directly applied to juvenile remai

Stable isotope paleohydrology and chemostratigraphy of the Albian Wayan Formation from the wedge-top depozone,North American Western Interior Basin

Understanding of the role of atmospheric moisture and heat transport in the climate system of the Cretaceous greenhouse world represents a major challenge in Earth system *** isotopic paleohydrologic data from mid-Cretaceous paleosols in North America,from paleoequatorial to paleoArctic latitudes,have been used to constrain the oxygen isotope mass balance of the Albian hydrologic *** the range from 40°-50°N paleolatitude,sideritic paleosols predominate,indicating paleoenvironments with positive precipitation-evaporation(P-E)*** exceptions occur on leeward side of the Sevier Orogen,where calcic paleosols in the wedge-top depozone record paleoenvironments with negative P-E balances in the orographic rain *** sections in the Wayan Formation of Idaho(WF)were sampled from the wedge-top *** units consist of stacked m-scale mudstone paleosols separated by m-scale sandstone-siltstone *** were sampled for organic carbon isotope profiles,and B-horizons from 6 well-developed paleosols were sampled for detrital zircons to determine maximum depositional *** first of these from the WF has produced a U-Pb concordia age of 101.0±1.1 *** same WF section has produced a stratigraphic trend of upwardly decreasingδ^(13)C values ranging from-24‰upwards to-27‰VPDB,suggesting correlation to the late Albian C15 C-isotope *** carbonates from the WF principally consist of micritic calcite,with carbon-oxygen isotope values that array along meteoric calcite lines(MCLs)withδ^(18)O values that range from-9.47‰up to-8.39‰*** approximately 42°N paleolatitude,these MCL values produce calculated paleoprecipitation values of-8.12‰to-7.04‰VSMOW,a range that is consistent with the estimates produced from other proxies at the same paleolatitudes across North *** results indicate that despite the orographic rain shadow effect,the processes of meridional atmospheric moisture transport in this locale were s

Transcriptome Analysis of Arabidopsis Wild-Type and gl3-sst sim Trichomes Identifies Four Additional Genes Required for Trichome Development

Transcriptome analyses have been performed on mature trichomes isolated from wild-type Arabidopsis leaves and on leaf trichomes isolated from the g13-sst sim double mutant, which exhibit many attributes of immature trichomes. The mature trichome profile contained many highly expressed genes involved in cell wall synthesis, protein turnover, and abiotic stress response. The most highly expressed genes in the g13-sst sim profile encoded ribosomal proteins and other proteins involved in translation. Comparative analyses showed that all but one of the genes encoding transcription factors previously found to be important for trichome formation, and many other trichome-important genes, were preferentially expressed in gl3-sst sim trichomes. The analysis of genes preferentially expressed in gl3-sst sim led to the identification of four additional genes required for normal trichome development. One of these was the HDG2 gene, which is a member of the HD-ZIP IV transcription factor gene family. Mutations in this gene did not alter trichome expansion, but did alter mature trichome cell walls. Mutations in BIT resulted in a loss of trichome branch formation. The relationship between bit and the phenotypically identical mutant, sti, was explored. Mutations in PEL3, which was previously shown to be required for development of the leaf cuticle, resulted in the occasional tangling of expanding trichomes. Mutations in another gene encoding a protein with an unknown function altered trichome branch formation.
