BACKGROUND The long-term impact of vitamin D deficiency and metabolic syndrome(MetS)on cardiovascular disease(CVD)and all-cause mortality are still a matter of *** To test the hypotheses that lower serum 25 hydroxyvitamin D[25(OH)D]concentrations(a marker of vitamin D level)and MetS have a long-term impact on the risk of CVD and all-cause mortality,and individuals with vitamin D deficiency can be identified by multiple *** A sample of 9094 adults,20 to 90 years of age,who participated in the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey(NHANES III,1988 to 1994)were followed through December 2015 was *** associations of serum 25(OH)D concentrations and MetS with CVD and all-cause mortality were analyzed longitudinally using Cox regression *** and regression tree(CART)for machine learning was applied to classify individuals with vitamin D *** Of 9094 participants,30%had serum 25(OH)D concentrations<20 ng/mL(defined as vitamin D deficiency),39%had serum 25(OH)D concentrations between 20 to 29 ng/mL(insufficiency),and 31%had serum 25(OH)D concentrations≥30 ng/mL(sufficiency).Prevalence of MetS was 28.4%.During a mean of 18 years follow-up,vitamin D deficiency and MetS were significantly associated with increased risk of CVD and all-cause *** with both vitamin D deficiency and MetS had the highest risk of CVD mortality(HR=1.77,95%CI:1.22-2.58)and all-cause mortality(HR=1.62,95%CI:1.26-2.09),followed by those with both vitamin D insufficiency and MetS for CVD mortality(HR=1.59,95%CI:1.12-2.24),and all-cause mortality(HR=1.41,95%CI:1.08-1.85).Meanwhile,vitamin D sufficiency significantly decreased the risk of CVD and all-cause mortality for those who even had *** the total study sample,CART analysis suggests that being non-Hispanic Black,having lower serum folate level,and being female were the first three predictors for those with serum 25(OH)D *** Vitamin D defic

Multilevel Modeling of PM2.5 and Risk of Cardiovascular Disease and Diabetes Mellitus in Adults Aged 65 and Older

We aimed to test a hypothesis that elevated ambient particulate matter (PM) 2.5 concentrations are significantly associated with risk of coronary heart disease (CHD), stroke, and diabetes mellitus (DM) in adults aged 65 and older. We analyzed data (2010-2013) from U.S. 1118 counties to examine the association between PM2.5 concentrations and risk of prevalent CHD, stroke, and DM, and mortality from cardiovascular disease (CVD), CHD, stroke, and DM in adults aged ≥ 65. Multilevel regression analysis technique was applied to test these associations. The results show that the annual mean of PM2.5 concentration was 8.7 μg/m3 in the total study sample. Significant differences in mean PM2.5 concentrations were observed across counties and states in the U.S. Multilevel regression analysis indicates that an average annual concentration of 1 μg/m3 increase in PM2.5 concentration was significantly associated with an increased prevalence of CHD, stroke, and DM by 4.9‰ (95% CI: 3.1‰ - 6.7‰), 0.8‰ (0.5‰ - 1.1‰), and 3.3‰ (2.9‰ - 4.4‰), respectively. State-level correlation analyses indicate that increased PM2.5 concentrations were significantly associated with increased age-adjusted mortality from CVD (r = 0.76, p < 0.001), CHD (r = 0.0.40, p = 0.004), stroke (r = 0.60, p p = 0.02). In conclusion, Elevated PM2.5 concentrations were significantly associated with an increased risk of the prevalence and mortality from CVD, CHD, stroke, and DM. Continued effort to control ambient PM2.5 concentrations could play an important role in risk reduction of cardiovascular disease and diabetes in the elderly.

Evidence for Cerebral Microvascular Injury in Head Trauma Involving Infants and Young Children

Material properties and characterizations of cross-linked electro-spinning raspberry ketone incorporated polyvinyl alcohol/gelatin fibrous scaffolds

The properties of polyvinyl alcohol/gelatin (PVA/GE) nanofibers have been previously investigated as a function of the processing parameters such as the ra-tios of PVA and GE, electrical field and tip-to-collector distance during the electro-spinning process, in this study, the properties of the electro-spinning PVA/GE nanofibers were examined when different solution feed rates were used to create the fibrous scaffold. The optimal conditions for the PVA/GE fibrous scaf-fold were determined to be a PVA/GE blend ratio of 8/2, electrical field of 24 kV, tip-to-collector distance of 10 cm and speed rate of 1 ml.h-1. Using these con-ditions, Raspberry ketone (RK) was incorporated into PVA/GE fibrous scaffolds and their microstruc-ture and material properties were characterized by SEM, DSC and XRD techniques. When the incorpo-rated RK and PVA/GE fibrous scaffolds were cross-linked, the tensile strength and water-resistant ability increased at increasing cross-linking time. However, in the in vitro analysis, a longer cross-linking time was shown to increase its cytotoxicity. The cytotoxic-ity of RKPVA/GE-8 fibrous scaffold was evaluated based on a cell proliferation study by culturing L-929 fibroblast cell on the fibrous scaffold for 1, 3 and 5 days. In these experiments, cell expansion was ob-served and the cells spread during the entire cell cul-ture time.

Hydroxyapatite delivery to dentine tubules using carboxymethyl cellulose dental hydrogel for treatment of dentine hypersensitivity

This study evaluated the effectiveness of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) hydrogel as a dental gel in delivering hydroxyapatite (HAp) to dentine tubules and reducing/eliminating dental hypersensitivity. The hydrogel was prepared by mixing solutions of CMC/ glycerol and distilled water/sorbitol then modified to contain 0%, 10%, 20% and 30% HAp. The pH of the hydrogels decreased and viscosity increased with increasing HAp content. A viability assay was performed to determine the cytotoxicity of the hydrogel samples and proliferation/adhesion behavior of cells cultured on the hydrogel surface. The samples promoted cell proliferation and became more biocompatible with the addition of HAp. Dentin discs were prepared and then treated with the fabricated hydrogels. Occlusion of the dentine tubules was observed by scanning electron microscopy before and after treatment. Blocking of the dentin tubules was markedly affected by the addition of HAp to the hydrogel samples that can result in possible reduction or elimination of hypersensitivity.

Background: Parasitic worms evade immune responses, and interactions between diseases can cause altered immunologic outcomes compared to what usually occurs with single infections. These interactions may influence vaccine and chemotherapeutic efficacy. Schistosoma mansoni and Plasmodium falciparum are co-endemic in Uganda and are the leading parasitic causes of public health problems across sub-Saharan Africa. Objectives: The overall aim was therefore, to elucidate the impact of S. mansoni infection on protective T helper immune responses on P. falciparum and S. mansoni co-infection. Methodology: This study evaluated the T helper immune responses in individuals with independent S. mansoni infection, independent P. falciparum infection, co-infection and non-infection in school attending children in a co-endemic area along Lake Victoria shores, Uganda. Immune responses were categorized into Th1, Th2, and Th17 based on unique cytokine(s) produced by the T helper subpopulation in ex vivo. Kato Katz thick smears and circulating cathodic antigen tests were performed for S. mansoni screening, whereas thick and thin blood smear techniques were performed for P. falciparum screening. Results: We observed an up regulated Th1 T helper subpopulation in independent P. falciparum infections compared to the uninfected group. Suboptimal T helper immune responses were detected in independent S. mansoni infections characterized by significantly down regulated Th1 (Z = -1.425, p = 0.0313) response in comparison to the non-infected group. Suboptimal T helper immune responses were also recorded in the co-infected individuals characterized by significantly down regulated Th1 (Z = -3.260, p = 0.0273) and Th2 (Z = -1.180, p = 0.0078) responses compared to independent P. falciparum. Conclusions: S. mansoni infection is a major contributor of a reduced effective T helper immune response against P. falciparum in P. falciparum and S. mansoni co-infection.

Chemical design of SiO_(2)-based glasses with high elastic moduli and low weight is of great ***,it is difficult to find a universal expression to predict the elastic moduli according to the glass composition before synthesis since the elastic moduli are a complex function of interatomic bonds and their ordering at different length *** we show that the densities and elastic moduli of SiO_(2)-based glasses can be efficiently predicted by machine learning(ML)techniques across a complex compositional space with multiple(>10)types of additive oxides besides SiO_(2).Our machine learning approach relies on a training set generated by high-throughput molecular dynamic(MD)simulations,a set of elaborately constructed descriptors that bridges the empirical statistical modeling with the fundamental physics of interatomic bonding,and a statistical learning/predicting model developed by implementing least absolute shrinkage and selection operator with a gradient boost machine(GBM-LASSO).
