Hippocampal neuronal loss causes cognitive dysfunction in Alzheimer’s *** hippocampal neurogenesis is reduced in patients with Alzheimer’s *** stimulates adult hippocampal neurogenesis in rodents and improves memory and slows cognitive decline in patients with Alzheimer’s ***,the molecular pathways for exercise-induced adult hippocampal neurogenesis and improved cognition in Alzheimer’s disease are poorly ***,regulator of G protein signaling 6(rGS6)was identified as the mediator of voluntary running-induced adult hippocampal neurogenesis in ***,we generated novel rGS6fl/fl;APP_(SWE) mice and used retroviral approaches to examine the impact of rGS6 deletion from dentate gyrus neuronal progenitor cells on voluntary running-induced adult hippocampal neurogenesis and cognition in an amyloid-based Alzheimer’s disease mouse *** found that voluntary running in APP_(SWE) mice restored their hippocampal cognitive impairments to that of control *** cognitive rescue was abolished by rGS6 deletion in dentate gyrus neuronal progenitor cells,which also abolished running-mediated increases in adult hippocampal *** hippocampal neurogenesis was reduced in sedentary APP_(SWE) mice versus control mice,with basal adult hippocampal neurogenesis reduced by rGS6 deletion in dentate gyrus neural precursor ***6 was expressed in neurons within the dentate gyrus of patients with Alzheimer’s disease with significant loss of these rGS6-expressing ***,rGS6 mediated voluntary running-induced rescue of impaired cognition and adult hippocampal neurogenesis in APP_(SWE) mice,identifying rGS6 in dentate gyrus neural precursor cells as a possible therapeutic target in Alzheimer’s disease.

Using human blood samples obtained from pre-pandemic donors,a recent article by Mateus et *** Science provided new evidence that SArS-CoV-2-reactive T-cells in unexposed donors are indeed HCoV-specific T-cells.1 The rapid global spread of coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19),caused by the newly-emerged coronavirus SArS-CoV-2,has led to millions of infections with substantial morbidity and mortality.2 Different clinical manifestations of COVID-19 have been observed:asymptomatic infections,mild self-limiting disease,acute respiratory distress syndrome and *** determinants underlying disease severity currently remain elusive;since severe patients often present with immune hyperresponsiveness,it is speculated that the host’immune response could be a contributing factor to severe disease.

Integration of Indigenous Knowledge and Disaster risk reduction: A Case Study from Baie Martelli, Pentecost Island, Vanuatu

Despite reaching heights of >6 m and destroying a sizeable coastal settlement at the head of Baie Martelli(Pentecost Island, Vanuatu, South Pacific), the 26 November 1999 tsunamis caused only five fatalities from a threatened population of about 300 persons, most of whom fled inland and upslope before the waves struck. This remarkable survival rate is attributed to both indigenous knowledge, largely in the form of kastom knowledge, and information obtained from a video about tsunamis that was shown in the area three weeks earlier. Interviews with 55 persons who experienced this tsunami suggest that indigenous knowledge about tsunami risk and response in Baie Martelli was well known among key members of the community and was probably largely responsible for the appropriate response. Future strategies for disaster risk reduction should involve maintaining such indigenous knowledge in such communities and supplementing this where needed with scientific knowledge filtered through indigenous culture and language.

Dynamic penetration behaviors of graphene origami under high-velocity impact

Brittleness remains the key bottleneck for graphene to be used as impact protection materials and this obstacle can be overcome by origami-modified *** we employed molecular dynamics sim-ulation to investigate the perforation behaviours of graphene origami(GOri)under ballistic impact from a diamond *** found that the threshold penetration velocity of GOri can be improved signifi-cantly by 46.27%compared with that of its pristine *** a small ballistic impact loading at a low speed,GOri experiences a unique unfolding process and hence has improved impact-resistance *** on the initial velocity of the projectile,three different penetration phenomena are observed,***-back,capture,and perforation *** penetration energy depends on the roughness of GOri,the initial impact velocity,the projectile’s radius and the layer *** study provides useful insights into the perforation behaviours and energy absorption of GOri and offers useful guidelines for graphene applications as impact protection materials.

resolution of phylogenetic relationships of the major subfamilies of the Delphacidae （Homoptera： Fulgoroidea） using the mitochondrial ribosomal DNA

Delphacid relationships from the genus level to the subfamily have been completely resolved （among those taxa examined） using sequence data from the 3＇ end of the 12S gene. Monophyly of the non-asiracine subfamilies was strongly supported and the asiracine Ugyops was placed in the most basal position of the tree. Support levels for monophyly of the Delphacini increased after weighting transversions more heavily than transitions and after removing the cixiid outgroup from the dataset. Among the Delphacini, Conomelus and Megamelus were more closely related to each other than either was to Chloriona. These results are in agreement with the tree based on morphological characters. However, in contrast to morphological data our results strongly supported a sister group relationship between the Stenocraninae and the Kelisiinae. Although the 12S gene fragment gave some information about the species relationships within Chloriona, neither this fragment nor the 5＇ end of the 16S gene appear to be very useful for this level. Molecular evolutionary patterns provided evidence that there has been a shift in base composition from T to A during the early evolution of the non-Asiracinae. The non-Asiracinae also had comparatively fast substitution rates and these two observations are possibly correlated. In the ‘ modem＇ delphacid Chloriona, the AT content was comparatively low in regions free of constraints but this was not the case for ‘ non-modem＇ delphacids. The trNA for valine has been translocated elsewhere, probably before the Delphacidae and Cixiidae diverged from each other.

Extreme developmental temperatures result in morphological abnormalities in painted turtles(Chrysemys picta):a climate change perspective

Increases in extreme environmental events are predicted to be major results of ongoing global climate change and may impact the persistence of *** examined the effects of heat and cold waves during embryonic development of painted turtles(Chrysemys picta)in natural nests on the occurrence of abnormal shell morphologies in *** found that nests exposed to extreme hot temperatures for>60 h produced more hatchlings with abnormalities than nests exposed to extreme hot temperatures for shorter periods,regardless of whether or not nesting females displayed abnormal *** observed no effect of extreme cold nest temperatures on the occurrence of hatchlings with ***,the frequency of nesting females with abnormal shell morphologies was approximately 2-fold lower than that of their offspring,suggesting that such abnormalities are negatively correlated with survival and *** turtles could potentially buffer their offspring from extreme heat by altering aspects of nesting behavior,such as choosing shadier nesting *** addressed this hypothesis by examining the effects of shade cover on extreme nest temperatures and the occurrence of hatchling *** shade cover was negatively correlated with the occurrence of extreme hot nest temperatures,it was not significantly correlated with ***,female choice of shade cover does not appear to be a viable target for selection to reduce hatchling *** results suggest that increases in the frequency and intensity of heat waves associated with climate change might perturb developmental programs and thereby reduce the fitness of entire cohorts of turtles.

Activated systemic inflammatory response at diagnosis reduces lymph node count in colonic carcinoma

AIM: To investigate a link between lymph node yield and systemic inflammatory response in colon cancer. METHODS: A prospectively maintained database was interrogated. All patients undergoing curative colonic resection were included. Neutrophil lymphocyte ratio(NLr) and albumin were used as markers of SIr. In keeping with previously studies, NLr ≥ 4, albumin r SIr. Statistical analysis was performed using 2 sample t-test and χ~2 tests where ***: Three hundred and two patients were included for analysis. One hundred and ninety-five patients had NLr r ≥ 4. There was no difference in age or sex between groups. Patients with NLr of ≥ 4 had lower mean lymph node yields than patients with NLr re patients with an elevated NLr had node positive disease and an increased lymph node ratio(≥ 0.25, P = 0.044). CONCLUSION: Prognosis in colon cancer is intimately linked to the patient’s immune response. Assuming standardised surgical technique and sub specialty pathology, lymph node count is reduced when systemic inflammatory response is activated.
