Clinicopathological and prognostic implications of endoglin (CD105) expression in hepatocellular carcinoma and its adjacent non-tumorous liver

AIM: the expression pattern of endoglin (CD105) in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) has not been reported so far. We hypothesized that CD105 could differentially highlight a subset of microvessels in HCC, and intratumoral microvessel density (IMVD) by CD105 immunostaining (IMVD-CD105) could provide better prognostic information than IMVD by CD34 immunostaining (IMVD-CD34).MEtHODS: Paraffin blocks of tumor and adjacent nontumorous liver tissues from 86 patients who underwent curative resection of HCC were used for this study. Serial sections were stained for CD105 and CD34, respectively,to highlight the microvessels. IMVD was counted according to a standard ***: In the HCC tissues, CD105 was either negatively or positively stained only in a subset of microvessels. In contrast, CD34 showed positive and more extensive microvessel staining in all cases examined. However, in the adjacent non-tumorous liver sections, CD105 showed a diffuse pattern of microvessel staining in 20 of 86 cases,while CD34 showed negative or only focal staining of the sinusoids around portal area. Correlation with clinicopathological data demonstrated that lower scores of IMVD-CD105 were found in larger sized tumors [mean 41.4/0.74 mm2 (＞5 cm tumor) vs 65.9/0.74 mm2(≤ 5 cm tumor), P = 0.043] and more aggressive tumors,as indicated by venous infiltration [36.8/0.74 mm2 (present)vs 64.2/0.74 mm2 (absent), P = 0.020], microsatellite nodules [35.1/0.74 mm2 (present) vs 65.9/0.74 mm2(absent), P = 0.012], and advanced tNM tumor stage [38.8/0.74 mm2 (stage 3 or 4) vs 68.3/0.74 mm2 (stage 1or 2), P = 0.014]. No prognostic significance was observed when median values were used as cut-off points using either IMVD-CD105 or IMVD-CD34. However, the presence of the diffuse pattern of CD105 expression in the adjacent non-tumorous liver tissues predicted a poorer disease-free survival (median 8.6 vs 21.5 mo, P = 0.026).CONCLUSION: Our data demonstrate that a lower IMVDCD105 is associated with larger

Inflammatory pseudotumor of the liver is a rare benign lesion that can mimic a malignant liver nioplasm. A case of inflammatory pseudotumor of the liver found in association with a malignant gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GISt) of the small bowel was reported. the inflammatory pseudotumor was misdiagnosed as a metastasis from the GISt by frozen section. A correct diagnosis was made only after histopathological examination of the paraffin section of the resescted specimen. this case is psrticularly interesting because of the association of the two rare pathological entities and the diagnostic dilemma that arose from the similarity of their histological appearances. to our knowledge，this association has not been reported in the literature.

AIM: to analyze the combined treatment of resection and intraoperative radiofrequency ablation (RFA) for multifocal hepatocellular carcinoma in terms of prognosis and surgical ***: this study was a retrospective case comparison study using prospectively collected data. the study covered the period from April 2001 to December 2006. the data of 200 patients with histologically confirmed hepatocellular carcinoma were reviewed. Nineteen patients (17 men and 2 women) having received resection in combination with RFA were chosen as subjects of the study (the combination group). Fiftyfour patients (43 men and 11 women) having received resection alone were selected for comparison (the resection group). the two groups matched tumor number and tumor size, and all the patients in the two groups displayed no tumor rupture, major vascular involvement and distant metastasis. their demographics, preoperative assessment, disease recurrence patterns, overall survival and diseasefree survival were ***: In the combination group, the medianage was 65 years (range, 3477 years), the median tumor number was 3 (range, 29), and the median tumor size was 6 cm (range, 1.214 cm). In the resection group, the median age was 51.5 years (range, 2780 years, P = 0.003), the median tumor number was 3 (range, 29, P = 0.574), and the median tumor size was 6 cm (range, 114 cm, P = 0.782). the two groups were similar in characteristics of tumors and comorbidities, and had comparable results in preoperative liver function tests. All patients had ChildPugh class A status. Bilobar involvement occurred in 14 patients (73.6%) in the combination group and 3 patients (5.5%) in the resection group (P = 0.04). Surgical resection with a tumor-free margin is the onlycurative treatment for hilar cholangiocarcinoma (Klatskin tumor). However, over half of the patients present late with unresectable tumors. Radiotherapy using external beamirradiation or intraluminal brachytherapy (ILBt) has been used to treat unresectable hilar cholangiocarcinoma with satisfactory outcome. We reported a patient with unresectable hilar cholangiocarcinoma surviving more than 6 years after combined external beam irradiation and ILBt.

Use of Recycled Glass in Architectural Mortars

In recent years,recycled glass has been widely used as aggregate replacements in concrete. Owing to the aesthetic potential of the coloured recycled glass,this research aims to fully utilize this advantage for their higher end uses,such as architectural mortar. In this study,architectural white cement mortar was produced with a self consolidating method using recycled glass as the aggregate. An adequate amount of Metakaolin was incorporated into the mortar to mitigate the adverse effect of alkali-silica reaction. the results show that the self-compacting method is suitable to produce architectural mortar containing up to 100% recycled glass. Overall,the performance of all the architectural mortar mixtures in terms of both fresh and hardened properties was good.

Past research has demonstrated that a phase-only hologram can be obtained by down-sampling the intensity image of the object scene prior to the generation of the hologram. In this Letter, we extend the method to the generation of binary phase-only holograms. A hologram derived with our proposed method is referred to as a binary-sampled phase-only hologram （BSPOH）. Being different from the parent scheme, we have adopted an off- axis configuration in the generation of the BSPOH to avoid the quantization noise, the zeroth-order light, and the conjugate lights. An experimental evaluation reveals that the reconstructed image of the BSPOH is of good quality, and only contains slight amount of noise.

Objective to investigate sex hormone deficiency related osteoporosis and efficacy of different therapies. Methods Orchiectomized and ovariectomized rat models are used to investigate sex hormone deficiency related osteoporosis and efficacy of different therapies. A rat vertebral body can be longitudinally divided into central portion, which contain more trabecular bone, and para-endplate portions which contain more compact bone. In matured male and female Wistar and Sprague-Dawley rat lumbar spines, we investigated baseline bone mineral density （BMD） characteristics and the differential segmental responses in bone loss within the lumbar vertebral body post gonadal surgery with clinical multidetector computed tomography. Results Para-endplate sections had a higher BMD than central sections. the cephalad para-endplate sections had a higher BMD than the caudad para-endplate sections. Eight weeks after gonadal removal, there was more bone loss in central sections than para-endplate sections. the relative difference of bone loss between para-endplate and central sections was more apparent in male rats than in female rats. there was more bone loss in caudad sections than cephalad sections; this lead to a further increase of BMD difference between caudad para-endplate sections and cephalad para-endplate sections post gonadal surgery. Conclusion the approach described in this study provided a consistent way to study BMD change within predominantly compact bone portion and trabecular bone portion of the vertebral body.
