Hans-Georg Gadamer＇s project of philosophical hermeneutics is an interpretive welcome for new insights and meaning, emerging from respectful dialogic encounter with the particularity of a given text. Gadamer＇s revelatory undertaking walks between the extremes of subjectivism and objectivism. As the title of Richard Bernstein＇s （1983） book, Beyond Objeetivism and Relativism, still suggests, there is a life world between interpreter and text. This dialogic meeting of a text constitutes a meaningful third, a living form of interpretive semiosis. This new dwelling, a horizon of revelatory meaning, garners life via dialogic play that engages a text in the interpretive process of respectful seriousness.

The effect of three-dimensional glottal geometry on intraglottal quasi-steady flow distributions and their relationship with phonation

Vocal fold geometry plays an important role in human phonation. The intraglottal quasi-steady pressure; velocity distributions depend upon the shape, size,; diameter of the glottis. This study reports the effects of the variation of glottal shapes on intraglottal pressures; velocities using a Plexiglas model with a glottis having nine symmetric glottal angles (uniform, as well as convergent; divergent 5°, 10°, 20°; 40°), while the minimal glottal diameter was held constant at 0.06 cm. The empirical data were supported by penalty finite element computational results. The results suggest that larger convergent glottal angles correspond to increased pressures; decreased velocities in the glottis upstream of the minimum glottal location, with a reversal of this pattern at the minimal glottal diameter location. The pressure dip near the glottal entrance for divergent glottal angles was greatest for the 10° divergence angle condition,; was sequentially less for 5°, 20°,; 40°. Flow resistance was greater for a convergent angle than a divergent angle of the same value,; least for the 10° divergent condition. Pressure recovery in the glottis suggested that the optimal glottal diffuser angle was near 10°. Results suggest that the glottal geometry has a critical relationship with phonation (especially for vocal efficiency),; therefore important significance to understanding artistic voice; clinical voice management.

We consider an adaptive finite element method （AFEM） for obstacle problems associated with linear second order elliptic boundary value problems and prove a reduction in the energy norm of the discretization error which leads to R-linear convergence. This result is shown to hold up to a consistency error due to the extension of the discrete multipliers （point functionals） to H^-1 and a possible mismatch between the continuous and discrete coincidence and noncoincidence sets. The AFEM is based on a residual-type error estimator consisting of element and edge residuals. The a posteriori error analysis reveals that the significant difference to the unconstrained case lies in the fact that these residuals only have to be taken into account within the discrete noncoincidence set. The proof of the error reduction property uses the reliability and the discrete local efficiency of the estimator as well as a perturbed Galerkin orthogonality. Numerical results are given illustrating the performance of the AFEM.

Somatic embryogenesis receptor kinase（SERK）proteins play pivotal roles in regulation of plant development and immunity. The rice genome contains two SERK genes,OsSerk1 and OsSerk2. We previously demonstrated that OsSerk2 is required for rice Xa21-mediated resistance to Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae（Xoo） and for normal development. Here we report the molecular characterization of OsSerk1. Overexpression of OsSerk1 results in a semi-dwarf phenotype whereas silencing of OsSerk1 results in a reduced angle of the lamina joint. OsSerk1 is not required for rice resistance to Xoo or Magnaporthe oryzae. Overexpression of Os Serk1 in OsSerk2-silenced lines complements phenotypes associated with brassinosteroid（BR） signaling defects, but not the disease resistance phenotype mediated by Xa21. In yeast, OsSERK1 interacts with itself forming homodimers, and also interacts with the kinase domains of OsSERK2 and BRI1, ***1 is a functional protein kinase capable of auto-phosphorylation in vitro. We conclude that, whereas OsSERK2 regulates both rice development and immunity, OsSERK1 functions in rice development but not immunity to Xoo and M. oryzae.

An explicit algebraic stress model (EASM) has been formulated for two-dimensional turbulent buoyant flows using a five-term tensor representation in a prior study. The derivation was based on partitioning the buoyant flux tensor into a two-dimensional and a three-dimensional component. The five-term basis was formed with the two-dimensional component of the buoyant flux tensor. As such, the derived EASM is limited to two-dimensional flows only. In this paper, a more general approach using a seven-term representation without partitioning the buoyant flux tensor is used to derive an EASM valid for two- and three-dimensional turbulent buoyant flows. consequently, the basis tensors are formed with the fully three-dimensional buoyant flux tensor. The derived EASM has the two-dimensional flow as a special case. The matrices and the representation coefficients are further simplified using a four-term representation. When this four-term representation model is applied to calculate two-dimensional homogeneous buoyant flows, the results are essentially identical with those obtained previously using the two-dimensional component of the buoyant flux tensor. Therefore, the present approach leads to a more general EASM formulation that is equally valid for two- and three-dimensional turbulent buoyant flows.

Effects of Numerical Methods on the calculation of Developing Plane channel Flow

In wall-bounded turbulent flow calculations, the past focus has been directed to the modelling of the Reynolds-stress gradients. Not much attention has been paid to the effects of the numerical methods used to calculate these terms and the modelled equations. Discrepancies between model calculations and measurements are quite often attributed to incorrect modelling, while the suitability and accuracy of the numerical methods used are seldom scrutinized. Instead, alternate near-wall and Reynolds-stress models are proposed to remedy the incorrect turbulent flow calculations. On the other hand, if care is not taken in the numerical treatment of the Reynolds-stress gradient terms, physically unrealistic results and solution instability could occur. Previous studies by the author and his collaborators on the effects of numerical methods have shown that some of the more commonly used numerical methods could enhance numerical stability in the solution procedure but would introduce considerable inaccuracy to the results. The flow cases chosen to demonstrate these inaccuracies are a backstep flow and flow in a square duct, where flow complexities are present. The current investigation attempts to show that the above-mentioned effects of numerical methods could also occur in the calculation of a developing plane channel flow, where flow complexities are absent. In addition, this study shows that the results thus obtained lead to a predicted skin friction coefficient that is influenced more by the numerical method used than by the turbulence model invoked. Together, these results show that numerical treatment of the Reynolds-stress gradients in the equations play an important role, even for a developing plane channel flow.
