Climate change is causing rapid and severe changes to many Earth systems and processes,with widespread cryospheric,ecological,and hydrological impacts globally,and especially in high northern *** is of major societal concern and there is an urgent need for improved understanding and predictive tools for environmental *** Changing Cold Regions Network(CCRN)is a Canadian research consortium with a focus to integrate existing and new experimental data with modelling and remote sensing products to understand,diagnose,and predict changing land,water,and climate,and their interactions and feedbacks over the geographic domain of the Mackenzie and Saskatchewan River Basins in *** network operates a set of 14 unique and focused Water,Ecosystem,Cryosphere and Climate(WECC)observatories within this region,which provide opportunities to observe and understand processes and their interaction,as well as develop and test numerical simulation models,and provide validation data for remote sensing *** paper describes this network and its observational,experimental,and modelling *** overview of many of the recent Earth system changes observed across the study region is provided,and some local insights from WECC observatories that may partly explain regional patterns and trends are *** of the model products being developed are discussed,and linkages with the local to international user community are reviewed—In particular,the use of WECC data towards model and remote sensing product calibration and validation is *** future activities and prospects for the network are also presented at the end of the paper.

COMPUTER AIDED ANAlYSIS OF FlEXI－BlE MEMBER IN CONSIDERATION OF THE EFFECTS OF DYNAMIC STI－FFEN－ING

A recently developed procedure to capture the dynamic stiffening of an arbitrary flexiblemember in large overall motion accompanied by small elastic vibrations is presented. A mechanicalsystem that consists of one or more flexible members is called a flexible mechanical system. If thesystem is considered as a multibody system, the flexiblemember can be considered as a flexible bodyin a flexible multibody system. Having retained the nonlinearitites up to an appropriate point in theanalysis, the linearization is then performed properiy so that the dynamic stiffening terms can befound naturally, while the explicit formulation of the governing equations for the deformation mo-tion is ultimately linear. Based on the procedure, the effects of dynamic stiffening are investigatedqualitatively and quantitatively with analytical and numerical examples. The results are useful incomputer aid analysis of the dynamic behavior of flexible mechanical systems.

A Review of Electromagnetic Activity in Cellular Mechanics

This is a review of recent literature concerning electromagnetic effects on cellular mechanics. “Recent” refers primarily to papers published in this (the 21st) century. The review shows that there are relatively few papers on cellular electromagnetics as compared with those on proteins, biochemistry, and cellular anatomy. The principal finding of the reviewed papers is that cellular electromagnetic fields appear to arise from longitudinal vibrations of the filaments making up the walls of the microtubules. Microtubules are long hollow cylinders which form the overall structure of the centrioles. The microtubules, and therefore the centrioles themselves, are arranged in nine sets of parallel blades with each blade having three microtubules. The centrioles occur in pairs perpendicularly to each other. During mitosis (cell division) the centriole pair becomes two pair which then separate and divide the cell into two. It seems that electromagnetic forces play a central role in this division. Electromagnetic activity in wound healing and in the imaging and treatment of tumors is discussed.

A Review of Centriole Activity, and Wrongful Activity, during Cell Division

This is a review paper on centriole behavior and their role in enabling cell division and duplication. The paper is based primarily on articles published in this, the 21st century. Following a description of centriole geometry, the paper discusses centriole duplication and the ensuring events leading to cell division. From a structural perspective each centriole is seen to be a cylindrical composition of nine blades, each having three microtubules which are themselves hollow cylinders approximately 400 nm long, with inner and outer diameters of 15 and 25 nm. The paper then discusses the nucleation of these microtubules. The paper concludes with a description of centriole malfunction and overduplication (supernumerary centrioles), leading to clusters of centrioles —a hallmark of cancer cells. These centriole clusters thus form “biomarkers” for tumor imaging and treatment.

We demonstrate the selective detection of hydrogen sulfide at breath concentration levels under humid airflow,using a self-validating 64-channel sensor array based on semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes(sc-SWCNTs).The reproducible sensor fabrication process is based on a multiplexed and controlled dielectrophoretic deposition of *** sensing area is functionalized with gold nanoparticles to address the detection at room temperature by exploiting the affinity between gold and sulfur atoms of the *** devices functionalized with an optimized distribution of nanoparticles show a sensitivity of 0.122%/part per billion(ppb)and a calculated limit of detection(lOD)of 3 *** the self-validation,our sensors show increased stability and higher response levels compared to some commercially available electrochemical *** cross-sensitivity to breath gases NH3 and NO is addressed demonstrating the high selectivity to ***,mathematical models of sensors’electrical characteristics and sensing responses are developed to enhance the differentiation capabilities of the platform to be used in breath analysis applications.

Mechanics of Centriole Microtubules

This is a review paper describing recent findings about the physical properties of centriolar microtubules. Microtubules are the principal structures making up the centrioles. The centrioles in turn are the principal agents in cell duplication and division (mitosis). The microtubules are seen to be long hollow cylinders: approximately 400 nm in length, with a 24 nm outside diameter, and a 5 nm wall thickness. Within the centrioles, the microtubules are arranged into nine parallel sets of triplets—thus numbering 27 parallel cylinders per centriole. Each normal eukaryotic (human and animal) cell, not in mitosis, has two perpendicular centrioles connected at their proximal (base) ends. During mitosis, these two become four, resulting in a total of 108 centriolar microtubules. The structure of the microtubules themselves is found to consist of 13 parallel filaments making up the cylinder walls. The filaments are composed of approximately 40 and β-tubulin connected end-to-end with their proximal (base) ends anchored in γ-tubulin. The longitudinal vibrations of the filaments are believed to create an electro-magnetic field within the cell which plays an important role in mitosis.

A New Exposition on Cell Division

This paper provides summary description of the procedures by which human and animal cells (eucaryotic cells) divide into two identical parts. The focus is on the nucleus, with particular attention given to the centrosome and the chromosome. Within the centrosome is a pair of organelle known as centriole. When the cell is about to divide, the centrioles duplicate themselves. At the same time, the DNA within the chromosome duplicates itself. The centriole pair, now two pairs, then separate with one pair migrating about the nucleus to the diametrically opposite side. The original and migrated centriole then emit long strands known as microtubules across the nucleus. Similarly, the chromosome emits long strands known as kinetochores. The microtubules and the kinetochores are perpendicular to each other and they cover the nucleus with a checkered appearance. The diametrically opposed centriole then forms centrosomes which pull the nucleus apart. The two nuclear parts then separate with each part taking with its half of the remainder of the cell (the cytoplasm) and thus two virtually identical cells are attained. The significance of this paper is that it provides the reader with a condensed summary of the life-dependent process known as cell division.

Using the Electromagnetics of Cancer’s Centrosome Clusters to Attract Therapeutic Nanoparticles

This paper summarizes recent research findings concerning centrioles, centriole duplication, centriole overduplication, supernumerary centrioles, centrosomes, and centrosome amplification. The paper then discusses the status of ongoing research on the use of nanoparticles for cancer treatment. The research findings show that a centriole produces an electromagnetic field apparently due to the longitudinal oscillation of its microtubules (MTs). A cluster of centrioles is therefore presumed to produce an enhanced electromagnetic field. Individual centrioles are immersed in a cloud of electron-dense material (proteins) which together with the centrioles is known as the centrosome. A cluster of centrioles thus produces a cluster of centrosomes—a hallmark of cancer cells. With enhanced electromagnetic fields, centrosome clusters provide an attraction for magnetically charged nanoparticles. These nanoparticles however are not attracted to normal cells which with only two (or at most four) centrioles, have a weaker magnetic field. The idea is simple: Magnetized and therapeutic nanoparticles are directed toward tumors and then attracted to the centrosome clusters of the tumor cells. Once inside the tumor cells, the nanoparticles can release their toxins.

Minimum Curve Radii for High-Speed Trains, Including the Gyroscopic Moments of the Wheels

This paper studies the title problem including an analysis of the gyroscopic effects of the wheels of a rail-car travelling at high-speed around a level, horizontal curve. The analysis is based upon the fundamental principles of dynamics. The result is a design formula for the minimum curve radius needed to prevent derailment. Aside from the rail car geometric and physical properties, the minimum curve radius depends upon the square the train speed. An illustrative example shows that the wheel gyroscopic effect is destabilizing and additive to the centrifugal force derailment tendency. From a track design perspective, however, the gyroscopic effect is relatively small compared with the centrifugal force effect.
