Biogenic production of seleno-amino acids and seleno-nanoparticles by Saccharomyces boulardii

Selenium is an essential element for humans as it involves different metabolic mechanisms. More bioavailable and bioaccessible selenium species are produced by microorganisms bioconverting inorganic selenium into nanoparticles and seleno-amino acids, which are of technological and health interest. Therefore, the objective of this study was the biogenic production of seleno-amino acids and selenium nanoparticles by Saccharomyces boulardii. It was found that the minimum inhibitory concentration of selenite that allowed the viability of the yeast, the biotransformation of selenium, and the production of selenium nanoparticles was 74 ppm of sodium selenite in YPD broth. The yeast accumulated 3.4 mg/g of selenium after 9 h of fermentation in the YPD broth enriched with the calculated minimum inhibitory concentration of Na2SeO3. The presence of selenomethionine, selenocysteine, and selenium nanoparticles was verified through RP-HPLC and TEM analysis. The results demonstrated that the biogenic production of seleno-amino acids and seleno-nanoparticles by the probiotic yeast S. boulardii is possible. These compounds could have applications in the fields of food technology and medicine.

This paper addresses fully space-time adaptive magnetic field computations. We describe an adaptive Whitney finite element method for solving the magnetoquasistatic formulation of Maxwell＇s equations on unstructured 3D tetrahedral grids. Spatial mesh re- finement and coarsening are based on hierarchical error estimators especially designed for combining tetrahedral H（curl）-conforming edge elements in space with linearly implicit Rosenbrock methods in time. An embedding technique is applied to get efficiency in time through variable time steps. Finally, we present numerical results for the magnetic recording write head benchmark problem proposed by the Storage Research Consortium in Japan.

Diabetic macular edema(DME) is the most common cause of vision loss in diabetic retinopathy,affecting 1 in 15 patients with diabetes mellitus(DM).The disruption of the inner blood-retina barrier(BRB) has been largely investigated and attributed the primary role in the pathogenesis and progression in DME, but there is increasing evidence regarding the role of outer BRB, separating the RPE from the underlying choriocapillaris,in the occurrence and evolution of *** development of novel imaging technologies has led to major improvement in the field of in vivo structural analysis of the macula allowing us to delve deeper into the pathogenesis of DME and expanding our vision regarding this *** this review we gathered the results of studies that investigated specific outer BRB optical coherence tomography parameters in patients with DM with the aim to outline the current status of its role in the pathogenesis and progression of DME and identify new research pathways contributing to the advancement of knowledge in the understanding of this condition.

Livestock and fish production has been growing rapidly in recent decades, driven by the increasing demand for animal-source food. In the last 25 years, the global per capita food demand for all animalsource food has increased by more than 40 kg per person per year [1]. Most of the increase in consumption and production is occurring in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), particularly in Asia and Latin America. This demand is driven in turn by increasing populations, growing wealth, and urbanization. Much of the demand is supplied by poultry, pork, milk, and fish—sectors that can more easily respond to demand by intensification [2].

Through complex mechanisms that guide axons to the appropriate routes towards their targets, axonal growth and guidance lead to neuronal system formation. These mechanisms establish the synaptic circuitry necessary for the optimal performance of the nervous system in all organisms. Damage to these networks can be repaired by neuroregenerative processes which in turn can re-establish synapses between injured axons and postsynaptic terminals. Both axonal growth and guidance and the neuroregenerative response rely on correct axonal growth and growth cone responses to guidance cues as well as correct synapses with appropriate targets. With this in mind, parallels can be drawn between axonal regeneration and processes occurring during embryonic nervous system development. However, when studying parallels between axonal development and regeneration many questions still arise; mainly, how do axons grow and synapse with their targets and how do they repair their membranes, grow and orchestrate regenerative responses after injury. Major players in the cellular and molecular processes that lead to growth cone development and movement during embryonic development are the Soluble N-ethylamaleimide Sensitive Factor （NSF） Attachment Protein Receptor （SNARE） proteins, which have been shown to be involved in axonal growth and guidance. Their involvement in axonal growth, guidance and neuroregeneration is of foremost importance, due to their roles in vesicle and membrane trafficking events. Here, we review the recent literature on the involvement of SNARE proteins in axonal growth and guidance during embryonic development and neuroregeneration.

Characterization by Thermogravimetric Analysis of Polymeric Concrete with High Density Polyethylene Mechanically Recycled

This paper presents the results of the characterization by thermogravimetric analysis of a new composite material called polymeric concrete. The polymeric concrete contains micro-particles obtained from High Density Poly-Ethylene (HDPE) mechanically recycled (post-consumer bottles);the official Mexican standard NMX-E-232-SCFI-1999 considers the HDPE as the recyclable plastic material. Thermo-grams based on weight lost were obtained from the raw material (HDPE) and the polymer concrete in order to obtain the glass transition temperature (Tg) and melting temperature (Tf). The analysis conditions were defined from 20°C to 180°C and the heat rate of 1°C/minute. The results show that the glass transition temperature of polymeric concrete is 46°C and the HDPE is 38°C. These results mean that the polymeric concrete is more resistant to decomposition. With respect to the melting temperature, the results show that the 2°C difference between polymeric concrete and HDPE is not significant. The polymeric concrete with HDPE recycled can be considered as composite material thermoplastic. The new material melts when it is heated to 146°C and has the ability to be softened, processed and reprocessed with temperature and pressure changes, which make it possible to obtain molded pieces in the desired shape.

Reflectivity and thickness analysis of epiretinal membranes using spectral-domain optical coherence tomography

AIM：To compare thickness and reflectivity spectral domain optical coherence tomography（SD-OCT）findings in patients with idiopathic epiretinal membranes（ERMs）,before and after ERM peeling surgery,with normal controls.·METHODS：A retrospective study analyzing SD-OCTs of eyes with ERMs undergoing ERM peeling surgery by one surgeon from 2008 to 2010 and normal control ***-OCTs were analyzed using a customized algorithm to measure reflectivity and *** relationship between the SD-OCT findings and best corrected visual acuity（BCVA）outcomes was also studied.·RESULTS：Thirty-four ERM eyes and 12 normal eyes were *** eyes had high reflectivity and thickness of the group of layers from the internal limiting membrane（ILM）to the retinal pigment epithelium（RPE）and the group of layers from the ILM to the external limiting membrane（ELM）.The values of reflectivity of these two groups of layers decreased postoperatively,but were still higher than normal *** contrast,preoperative eyes had lower reflectivity of two10×15 pixel regions of interest（ROIs）incorporating：1）ELM＋outer nuclear layer（ONL）and 2）photoreceptor layer（PRL）＋RPE,compared to *** values of reflectivity of these ROIs increased postoperatively,but were still lower than normal controls.A larger improvement in BCVA postoperatively was correlated with a greater degree of abnormal preoperative reflectivity and thickness findings.·C ONCLUSION：Quantitative differences in reflectivity and thickness between preoperative,postoperative,and normal SD-OCTs allow assessment of changes in the retina secondary to *** study identified hyperreflective inner retina changes and hyporeflective outer retina changes in patients with ***-OCT quantitative measures of reflectivity and/or thickness of specific groups of retinal layers and/or ROIs correlate with improvement in BCVA.

Glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c) for postmortem diagnosis of diabetes

The study was conducted at the Estonian Forensic Science Institute in 2008-2014 as continuous part of our previous study of alcohol and premature death in Estonian *** data from 504 cases of male deaths (ages 19-79) were collected and blood and urine samples for glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c),liver enzymes and alcohol concentration were *** aim of our research was to find undiagnosed diabetes and diabetes risk cases postmortem on the basis of increased values of ***1c was within the reference value 4.8%-5.9% (29-42 mmol/mol),in 88.1% (n =444) of cases,below reference value in 2.4% (n =12),in the risk group of diabetes,HbA1c 6.0%-6.4% (42-46 mmol/mol) was within 5.8% (n =29),and HbA1c result of ≥6.5% (48 mmol/mol) manifested in 3.8% (n =19) of *** higher the age,the more cases with HbA1c value ≥6.0% (42 mmol/mol) *** the group of external causes of death (n =348),the HbAlc value of ≥6.5% (48 mmol/mol) HbA1c occurred in four *** HbA1c value was ≥6.5% (48 mmol/mol) in 78.9% of 156 cases when the cause of death was disease,of which 58% were cardiovascular *** prevalence of diabetes and diabetes risk was found lower compared to population-based study,as majority of the deceased were young and middle-aged males and no females were *** the case of poisoning with narcotic substances,HbA1c was within the reference range.A negative correlation occurred between alcohol intoxication and HbA1c value.A positive correlation between ALT and HbA1c was found-the higher stage of liver damage correlated with the higher HbA1c level.
