Current status of adoption of no-till farming in the world and some of its main benefits

In 1999 no-tillage farming,synonymous of zero tillage farming or conservation agriculture,was adopted on about 45 million ha world wide,growing to 72 million ha in 2003 and to 111 million ha in 2009,corresponding to an growth rate of 6 million ha per *** adoption rates have been experienced in South America where some countries are using no-tillage farming on about 70%of the total cultivated *** to countries like the USA where often fields under no-tillage farming are tilled every now and then,more than two thirds of the area under no-tillage systems in South America is permanently not tilled;in other words once adopted,the soil is never tilled *** spread of no-tillage systems on more than 110 million ha world-wide shows the great adaptability of the systems to all kinds of climates,soils and cropping ***-tillage is now being practiced from the artic circle over the tropics to about 50ºlatitude south,from sea level to 3,000 m altitude,from extremely rainy areas with 2,500 mm a year to extremely dry conditions with 250 mm a ***-till farming offers a way of optimizing productivity and ecosystem services,offering a wide range of economic,environmental and social benefits to the producer and to the *** the same time,no-till farming is enabling agriculture to respond to some of the global challenges associated with climate change,land and environmental degradation,and increasing cost of food,energy and production *** wide recognition of no-till farming as a truly sustainable system should ensure the spread of the no-till technology and the associated practices of organic soil cover and crop rotation,as soon as the barriers to its adoption have been overcome,to areas where adoption is currently still *** widespread adoption globally also shows that no-tillage farming cannot any more be considered a temporary fashion or a craze;instead largely through farmers’own effort,the system has established itself as a farming

Pairing nitroxyl radical and phenazine with electron-withdrawing/-donating substituents in “water-in-ionic liquid” for high-voltage aqueous redox flow batteries

Aqueous redox-active organic materials-base electrolytes are sustainable alternatives to vanadium-based electrolyte for redoxﬂow batteries(RFBs)due to the advantages of high ionic conductivity,environmentally benign,safety and low ***,the underexplored redox properties of organic materials and the narrow thermodynamic electrolysis window of water(1.23 V)hinder their wide ***,seeking suitable organic redox couples and aqueous electrolytes with a high output voltage is highly suggested for advancing the aqueous organic *** this work,the functionalized phenazine and nitroxyl radical with electron-donating and electron-withdrawing group exhibit redox potential of-0.88 V and 0.78 V ***,respectively,in“water-in-ionic liquid”supporting *** spectra reveal that the activity of water is largely suppressed in“water-in-ionic liquid”due to the enhanced hydrogen bond interactions between ionic liquid and water,enabling an electrochemical stability window above 3 V.“Water-in-ionic liquid”supporting electrolytes help to shift redox potential of nitroxyl radical and enable the redox activity of functionalized *** assembled aqueous RFB allows a theoretical cell voltage of 1.66 V and shows a practical discharge voltage of 1.5 V in the“water-in-ionic liquid”***,capacity retention of 99.91%per cycle is achieved over 500 charge/discharge cycles.A power density of 112 mW cm^(-2) is obtained at a current density of 30 mA cm^(-2).This work highlights the importance of rationally combining supporting electrolytes and organic molecules to achieve high-voltage aqueous RFBs.

Parametric investigation of railway fastenings into the formation and mitigation of short pitch corrugation

Short pitch corrugation has been a problem for railways worldwide over one *** this paper,a parametric investigation of fastenings is conducted to understand the corrugation formation mechanism and gain insights into corrugation mitigation.A three-dimensional finite element vehicle-track dynamic interaction model is employed,which considers the coupling between the structural dynamics and the contact mechanics,while the damage mechanism is assumed to be differential *** fastening models with different configurations,boundary conditions,and parameters of stiffness and damping are built up and *** models may represent different service stages of fastenings in the ***,the effect of train speeds on corrugation features is *** results indicate:(1)Fastening parameters and modelling play an important role in corrugation formation.(2)The fastening longitudinal constraint to the rail is the major factor that determines the corrugation *** fastening vertical and lateral constraints influence corrugation features in terms of spatial distribution and wavelength components.(3)The strengthening of fastening constraints in the longitudinal dimension helps to mitigate ***,the inner fastening constraint in the lateral direction is necessary for corrugation alleviation.(4)The increase in fastening longitudinal stiffness and damping can reduce the vibration amplitudes of longitudinal compression modes and thus reduce the track corrugation *** simulation in this work can well explain the field corrugation in terms of the occurrence possibility and major wavelength *** can also explain the field data with respect to the small variation between the corrugation wavelength and train speed,which is caused by frequency selection and jump between rail longitudinal compression modes.

Boron neutron capture therapy(BNCT)is a cancer treatment modality based on the nuclear capture and fission reactions that occur when boron-10,a stable isotope,is irradiated with neutrons of the appropriate energy to produce boron-11 in an unstable form,which undergoes instantaneous nuclear fission to produce high-energy,tumoricidal alpha *** primary purpose of this review is to provide an update on the first drug used clinically,sodium borocaptate(BSH),by the Japanese neurosurgeon Hiroshi Hatanaka to treat patients with brain tumors and the second drug,boronophenylalanine(BPA),which first was used clinically by the Japanese dermatologist Yutaka Mishima to treat patients with cutaneous ***,BPA has become the primary drug used as a boron delivery agent to treat patients with several types of cancers,specifically brain tumors and recurrent tumors of the head and neck *** focus of this review will be on the initial studies that were carried out to define the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of BSH and BPA and their biodistribution in tumor and normal tissues following administration to patients with high-grade gliomas and their subsequent clinical use to treat patients with highgrade ***,wewill summarize the studies thatwere carried out in Japan with BSH and subsequently at our own institution,The Ohio State University,and those of several other ***,we will describe studies carried out in Japan with BPA and then in the United States that have led to its use as the primary drug that is being used clinically for ***,although there have been intense efforts to develop new and better boron delivery agents for BNCT,none of these have yet been evaluated *** present reportwill provide a guide to the future clinical evaluation of new boron delivery agents prior to their clinical use for BNCT.

1 INTRODUCTION,This is the third Editorial/Commentary that one of us(***)has written relating to boron neutron capture therapy(BNCT)[1,2].For those readers who are unfamiliar with BNCT we would refer them to several recent comprehensive reviews[3–5].The second Editorial ended on a hopeful note that with the introduction of acceleratorbased neutron sources(ABNSs),BNCT would enter into the mainstream of radiation therapy[2].

Background Stroke aetiology remains cryptogenic in a relevant proportion of patients with acute ischaemic stroke(AIS).We assessed whether enhanced diagnostic workup after AIS yields a higher rate of prespecified pathological findings compared with routine diagnostic care *** Hospitalised patients with AIS were prospectively enrolled in the investigator-initiated observational HEart and BRain Interfaces in Acute Ischaemic Stroke(HEBRAS)study at the Charité,Berlin,*** with AIS without known atrial fibrillation(AF)underwent cardiovascular MR imaging(CMR),MR-angiography of the aortic arch and prolonged Holter-ECG monitoring on top of routine diagnostic *** Among 356 patients with AIS(mean age 66 years,37.6%female),enhanced workup yielded a higher rate of prespecified pathological findings compared with routine care(17.7%vs 5.3%;p<0.001).Consequently,fewer patients were classified as cryptogenic after enhanced diagnostic workup(38.5%vs 45.5%,p<0.001).Routine care included echocardiography in 228(64.0%)*** was successfully performed in 292(82.0%)patients and revealed more often a prespecified pathological finding compared with routine echocardiography(16.1%vs 5.3%).Furthermore,study-related ECG monitoring(median duration 162 hours(IQR 98–210))detected AF in 16(4.5%)patients,while routine monitoring(median duration 51 hours(IQR 34–74))detected AF in seven(2.0%)*** Enhanced diagnostic workup revealed a higher rate of prespecified pathological findings in patients with AIS compared with routine diagnostic care and significantly reduced the proportion of patients with cryptogenic *** registration number NCT02142413.

Assessing soil quality is essential for crop management and soil temporal changes. The present study aims to evaluate soil quality in the Ferralitic soils context countrywide. This assessment was done using multivariate soil quality indice (SQI) models, such as additive quality index (AQI), weighted quality indexes (WQIadd and WQIcom) and Nemoro quality index (NQI), applied to two approaches of indicator selection: total data set (TDS) and minimum data set (MDS). Physical and chemical soil indicators were extracted from the ORSTOM’s reports resulting from a sampling campaign in different provinces of Gabon. The TDS approach shows soil quality status according to eleven soil indicators extracted from the analysis of 1,059 samples from arable soil layer (0 - 30 cm depth). The results indicated that 87% of all provinces presented a very low soil quality (Q5) whatever the model. Among soil indicators, exchangeable K+ and Mg2+, bulk density and C/N ratio were retained in MDS, using principal component analysis (PCA). In the MDS approach, 50 to 63% of provinces had low soil quality grades with AQI, WQIadd and NQI, whereas the total was observed with WQIcom. Only 25% of provinces had medium soil quality grades with AQI and NQI models, while 12.5% (NQI) and 25% (AQI) presented high quality grades. Robust statistical analyses confirmed the accuracy and validation (0.80 r P ≤ 0.016) of AQI, WQIadd and NQI into the TDS and MDS approaches. The same sensitivity index value (1.53) was obtained with AQI and WQIadd. However, WQIadd was chosen as the best SQI model, according to its high linear regression value (R2 = 0.82) between TDS and MDS. This study has important implications in decision-making on monitoring, evaluation and sustainable management of Gabonese soils in a pedoclimatic context unfavorable to plant growth.
