Are Family Table Foods Appropriate for Infants? Comparing the Nutritional Quality of Homemade Meals Adapted from the Family’s Table Foods and Those Specially Prepared for Infants

The Brazilian Ministry of Health recommends that by 8 months of age, children should eat the same types of foods consumed by the other members of the family. Thus, this study sought to evaluate whether the nutritional composition of meals specially prepared (SM) for children aged 7 to 18 months in low-income families was superior to that of meals adapted (AM) from the family’s table foods. Protein, fat, carbohydrate, energy, dietary fiber, iron, sodium and sodium chloride values, were determined by chemical analyses and compared to dietetic guidelines. The infants’ hemoglobin levels were also investigated. In total, sixty samples of the infants’ lunch meal (51 AM and 9 SM) were taken for during a home visit. The values of protein, fat, carbohydrate, dietary fiber and energy of the AM were significantly lower, while the sodium and sodium chloride values were significantly higher, compared to those of the SM. The AM also contained significantly more water. No differences were seen with regard to iron values. Sodium chloride amounted for most of the sodium content. Neither the SM nor AM was adequate in terms of iron and sodium. All SM were adequate for protein and fat, whereas AM showed significantly more samples with inadequate energy levels. SM fell within the Acceptable Macronutrient Distribution Range, while AM fell below the lower value for fat and slightly above the upper value for carbohydrate. The prevalence of anemia was 60% in the study population (36/60). In conclusion, meals adapted from the family’s table foods showed a lower nutrient density and a less balanced macronutrient range when compared to meals specially prepared for infants. The main nutritional shortcomings, for both AM and SM, were the extremely low content of iron and the high content of sodium.

Operation of the EWS in the City of Matagalpa, Nicaragua

The city of Matagalpa, due to the geological and morphological features of the territory, exposure to natural phenomena, the degradation of natural resources and rapid population growth, has endangered the welfare of its population, because of the high vulnerability and risk to the occurrence of natural disasters, principally flooding from the Grande Matagalpa River, which crosses through the center of the city, frequently leaving significant material damage and human loss. In this context, the initiative from the municipal government of Matagalpa to implement the “Rio Grande Matagalpa” project was born, financed by the European Cooperation, in order to initiate a process of flood risk management in the upper river basin and to strengthen and empower the population and the community in the prevention, mitigation and preparation against floods. As part of the project, the Joint Early Warning System (EWS) was designed, implemented and is currently operating, its purpose being to have available the information in real time, provided by automated tools and equipment, and monitored by local community organizations. The EWS is integrated into the risk management process which allows it to alert and communicate to the population about the possible occurrence of phenomenon possibly causing natural disasters, principally flooding in the city of Matagalpa.

Ferrara ring segments implantation for treating keratoconus

AIM: To investigate the efficacy of Ferrara rings (FR) implantation in the treatment of ***: It was a retrospective case series descriptive study. The sample was comprised of 50 patients 79 eyes diagnosed with progressive keratoconus. This included 24 (48%) males and 26 (52%) females between the age of 13 and 44 years. All participants underwent surgical implantation of FR in the period between January 2009 and September 2010 at Jordan University Hospital. Thorough ophthalmologic examinations were applied to measure vital variables for each pathological condition before and after surgery. RESULTS: Findings indicated an overall significant postoperative improvement in both uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA) and best spectacle corrected visual acuity (BSCVA) throughout follow up visits. Moreover, results illustrated a significant decrease in spherical equivalent (SE) and keratometric readings (lower, higher and the average). CONCLUSION: Surgical intervention strategies are being frequently developed to meet the needs of patients with keratoconus. The implantation of Ferrara rings has proven to be a safe and feasible alternative procedure for the treatment of mild-moderate keratoconus especially for patients with contact lenses intolerance. We have found that this procedure has improved visual outcomes in all eyes studied. Nevertheless, further research is needed to investigate long term outcomes.

Isolation and molecular identification of <i>Ascomycetes</i>in sediments and waters of the Gulf of Aqaba, Red Sea

Using molecular approach, we aimed to identify fungal phylotypes that exist in the Gulf of Aqaba, Red sea. Several samples were taken from sediments and seawater of three locations along 26 kilometers at 5 m depth. 18S small subunit rRNA gene was targeted for PCR amplification and sequencing. Partial sequences introduced as query in BLASTN phylogenetic analysis revealed 100% identity with Ascomycota, namely, Aspergillus sp. Penicillium sp. and its closely related Eupenicillium sp. The top scorer species in this analysis were Aspergillus sydowii, Aspergillus wentii, Aspergillus flocculosus, Penicillium expansum and Eupenicillium javanicum with 98% - 100% identity. Phylogenetic analyses demonstrates close relatedness among isolated fungi and potential association with Ascomycetes. This study reports a new geographical location in which facultative marine Ascomycetes exist in, and sheds some light on fungal diversity in Gulf of Aqaba.

Four Sliding Windows Pattern Matching Algorithm (FSW)

This paper presents an efficient pattern matching algorithm (FSW). FSW improves the searching process for a pattern in a text. It scans the text with the help of four sliding windows. The windows are equal to the length of the pattern, allowing multiple alignments in the searching process. The text is divided into two parts;each part is scanned from both sides simultaneously using two sliding windows. The four windows slide in parallel in both parts of the text. The comparisons done between the text and the pattern are done from both of the pattern sides in parallel. The conducted experiments show that FSW achieves the best overall results in the number of attempts and the number of character comparisons compared to the pattern matching algorithms: Two Sliding Windows (TSW), Enhanced Two Sliding Windows algorithm (ETSW) and Berry-Ravindran algorithm (BR). The best time case is calculated and found to be??while the average case time complexity is??.

Enhancing ERS-A Algorithm for Pattern Matching (EERS-A)

Pattern matching is a very important topic in computer science. It has been used in various applications such as information retrieval, virus scanning, DNA sequence analysis, data mining, machine learning, network security and pattern recognition. This paper has presented a new pattern matching algorithm—Enhanced ERS-A, which is an improvement over ERS-S algorithm. In ERS-A, two sliding windows are used to scan the text from the left and the right simultaneously. The proposed algorithm also scans the text from the left and the right simultaneously as well as making comparisons with the pattern from both sides simultaneously. The comparisons done between the text and the pattern are done from both sides in parallel. The shift technique used in the Enhanced ERS-A is the four consecutive characters in the text immediately following the pattern window. The experimental results show that the Enhanced ERS-A has enhanced the process of pattern matching by reducing the number of comparisons performed.

Rare Aggressive Form of Multiple Myeloma with Diffuse Osteosclerosis and Elevated CA 15-3 Levels

We report the case of a 56-year-old female who had recently been examined for back and epigastric pain, and was diagnosed in the internal medicine ward as having an aggressive rare form of multiple myeloma with diffuse osteoblastic bone lesions. She also had high levels of breast tumor marker (CA 15-3), severe tumor lysis syndrome, and pleural and central nervous system involvement. A few cases of multiple myeloma with diffuse osteosclerosis that are not part of POEMS syndrome (polyneuropathy, organomegaly, endocrinopathy, monoclonal gammopathy, skin changeshave) have been described. None of these cases were as aggressive as our case. To our knowledge it is the first report describing an elevation in CA 15-3 in conjunction with multiple myeloma.

Platelet-Activating Factor Induces Du-al-Specificity Phosphatase 1 and 5 Gene Expression

Platelet-activating factor (PAF) is a potent inflammatory phospholipid mediator that is known to play a role in early-phase responses in asthma and other diseases. Through its high affinity receptor, PAFR, PAF is known to activate multiple signalling pathways contributing to its proinflammatory effects. Of these pathways, the mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) cascade is initiated upon PAF stimulation, leading to the activation of the conventional MAPKs ERK1/2, p38 and JNK. Since dual-specificity phosphatases (DUSP) downregulated MAPK activity, we postulated that PAF could also enhance DUSP expression and thus induced an autoregulatory loop. In this report, we studied the effect of PAF on DUSP mRNA expression in human monocytes. Our results demonstrate that PAF induces DUSP1 and DUSP5 gene expression in a time- and concentration-dependent manner, with maximal effects at PAF 100 nM and at 20 - 30 min of stimulation. In contrast, DUSP2 and DUSP6 gene expression was not enhanced by PAF. Moreover, leukotriene D4, another lipid mediator of inflammation, was unable to modulate DUSP expression. PAF-induced DUSP expression was prevented by the PAFR antagonist WEB2170 and by pretreatment with the transcriptional inhibitor Actinomycin D. Moreover, enhanced DUSP5, but not DUSP1 expression was prevented by pretreatment with the ERK inhibitor PD98059 or the PI3K inhibitor Wortmannin. Taken together, our results indicate that PAF selectively enhances DUSP1 and DUSP5 gene expressions through PAFR activation, and suggest that PAF may have an active role in the resolution of inflammation by its ability to upregulate the two DUSPs and thus provide a negative auto-regulatory signalling mechanism.

Porcelain fracture of metal-ceramic tooth-supported and implant-supported restorations: A review

Metal-ceramic restorations are widely used in dentistry with a high degree of general success. However, fracture of these restorations does occur and usually frustrates both the dentist and the patient. Objective: This literature review discusses the factors that may lead to the fracture of these restorations whether they are tooth-supported or implant-supported with the aim of making dentists and technicians aware of these factors to avoid them. Factors reviewed include: technical factors, dentist-related factors, inherent material properties, direction, magnitude and frequency of applied loads, environmental factors, screw-retained implant-supported restorations, and posterior cantilevered prostheses. Material and Methods: A netbased search in “Pubmed” was performed and combined with a manual search. The search was limited to articles written in English. Conclusions: the published literature revealed that the factors predisposing to fracture of metal-ceramic restorations may be related to the technician, dentist, patient, environment, design of the restoration, or to inherent structure of ceramics and others. However, if the dentist and technician understand these factors and respect the physical characteristics of the materials, most of those are avoidable.
