Traditionally,optical microscopy is used to visualize the morphological features of pathogenic bacteria,of which the features are further used for the detection and ident ification of the ***,due to the resolution limitation of conventional optical microscopy as well as the lack of standard pattern library for bacteria identification,the ffectiveness of this optical microscopy-based method is ***,we reported a pilot study on a combined use of Structured Illumination Microscopy(SIM)with machine learning for rapid bacteria *** applying machine learning to the SIM image datasets from three model bacteria(including Escherichia coli,Mycobacterium smegmatis,and Pseudomonas aeruginosa),we obtained a classifcation accuracy of up to 98%.This study points out a promising possibility for rapid bacterial identification by morphological features.

Simulations based on solving the Kohn-Sham(KS)equation of density functional theory(DFT)have become a vital component of modern materials and chemical sciences research and development *** its versatility,routine DFT calculations are usually limited to a few hundred atoms due to the computational bottleneck posed by the KS *** we introduce a machine-learning-based scheme to efficiently assimilate the function of the KS equation,and by-pass it to directly,rapidly,and accurately predict the electronic structure of a material or a molecule,given just its atomic configuration.A new rotationally invariant representation is utilized to map the atomic environment around a grid-point to the electron density and local density of states at that *** mapping is learned using a neural network trained on previously generated reference DFT results at millions of *** proposed paradigm allows for the high-fidelity emulation of KS DFT,but orders of magnitude faster than the direct ***,the machine learning prediction scheme is strictly linear-scaling with system size.

Conversion-type anode materials with a high charge storage capability generally su er from large volume expansion, poor electron conductivity, and sluggish metal ion transport kinetics. The electrode material described in this paper, namely cobalt sulphide nanoparticles encapsulated in carbon cages(Co9S8@NC), can circumvent these problems. This electrode material exhibited a reversible sodium-ion storage capacity of 705 mAh g^-1 at 100 mA g^-1 with an extraordinary rate capability and good cycling stability. Mechanistic study using the in situ transmission electron microscope technique revealed that the volumetric expansion of the Co9S8 nanoparticles is bu ered by the carbon cages, enabling a stable electrode–electrolyte interface. In addition, the carbon shell with high-content doped nitrogen significantly enhances the electron conductivity of the Co9S8@NC electrode material and provides doping-induced active sites to accommodate sodium ions. By integrating the Co9S8@NC as negative electrode with a cellulose-derived porous hard carbon/graphene oxide composite as positive electrode and 1 M NaPF6 in diglyme as the electrolyte, the sodium-ion capacitor full cell can achieve energy densities of 101.4 and 45.8 Wh kg^-1 at power densities of 200 and 10,000 W kg^-1, respectively.

A universal strategy for the creation of machine learning-based atomistic force fields

Emerging machine learning(ML)-based approaches provide powerful and novel tools to study a variety of physical and chemical *** this contribution,we outline a universal strategy to create ML-based atomistic force fields,which can be used to perform high-fidelity molecular dynamics *** scheme involves(1)preparing a big reference dataset of atomic environments and forces with sufficiently low noise,e.g.,using density functional theory or higher-level methods,(2)utilizing a generalizable class of structural fingerprints for representing atomic environments,(3)optimally selecting diverse and nonredundant training datasets from the reference data,and(4)proposing various learning approaches to predict atomic forces directly(and rapidly)from atomic *** the atomistic forces,accurate potential energies can then be obtained by appropriate integration along a reaction coordinate or along a molecular dynamics *** on this strategy,we have created model ML force fields for six elemental bulk solids,including Al,Cu,Ti,W,Si,and C,and show that all of them can reach chemical *** proposed procedure is general and universal,in that it can potentially be used to generate ML force fields for any material using the same unified workflow with little human ***,the force fields can be systematically improved by adding new training data progressively to represent atomic environments not encountered previously.

Intramolecular vibrations of large macromolecules reside in the terahertz range. In particular, protein vibrations are closely spaced in frequency, resulting in a nearly continuous vibrational density of states. This density of vibrations interferes with the identification of specific absorption lines and their subsequent association with specific functional motions. This challenge is compounded with the absorption being dominated by the solvent and local relaxational motions. A strategy for removing the isotropic relaxational loss and isolating specific vibrations is to use aligned samples and polarization-sensitive measurements. Here, we demonstrate a technique to rapidly attain the anisotropic resonant absorbance using terahertz time domain spectroscopy and a spinning sample. The technique, modulated orientation-sensitive terahertz spectroscopy(MOSTS), has a nonzero signal only for anisotropic samples, as demonstrated by a comparison between a silicon wafer and a wire grid polarizer. For sucrose and oxalic acid molecular crystals, the MOSTS response is in agreement with modeled results for the intermolecular vibrations. Further, we demonstrate that, even in the presence of a large relaxational background, MOSTS isolates underlying vibrational resonances.

BACKGROUND Current therapeutic techniques for pancreatic pseudocyst include surgical management with a laparoscopic approach or an open surgical procedure,percutaneous catheter drainage and endoscopic *** it remains controversial whether different treatment approaches affect inpatient *** To investigate inpatient outcome of different treatment approaches in treating pancreatic *** Here we conducted a retrospective analysis of pancreatic pseudocyst-associated hospitalizations using the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project-Nationwide Inpatient *** Classification of Diseases 10 clinical modification and procedure codes are *** A total of 7060 patients meeting the above criteria were *** study revealed laparoscopic approach associated with the lowest rate of red blood cell transfusion(P<0.001),and it had lower short-term complications including acute renal failure(P=0.01),urinary tract infection(P=0.01),sepsis(P<0.001)and acute respiratory failure(P=0.01).Laparoscopic surgical approach associated with the shortest mean length of stay(P=0.009),and it had the lowest total charge(P=0.03).All three modalities have similar inpatient mortality(P=0.28).The study also revealed that percutaneous drainage associated with more emergent admission(P<0.001),rural hospital performs the most open surgical drainage(P<0.001)and patients who received laparoscopic drainage are more likely to be discharged home(P<0.001).CONCLUSION Laparoscopic drainage of pancreatic pseudocysts associated with the least shortterm complications and had better outcomes comparing to percutaneous and open surgical drainage from 2016 National Inpatient Sample database.
