Unilateral visual impairment in rural south India-Andhra Pradesh Eye Disease Study(APEDS)

AIM： To report the prevalence and causes of unilateral visual impairment（UVI） in rural population of all ages in rural Andhra Pradesh, India.·METHODS： A population-based cross sectional study using a multi-stage cluster sampling methodology was carried out in West Godavari, Adilabad and Mahbubnagar districts in south India. A comprehensive eye examination that included presenting and best corrected visual acuity and dilated fundus examination was conducted by trained professionals. UVI is defined as presenting visual acuity 6/18 in one eye but ≥6/18 in other eye. Multiple logistic regression analysis was used to test association of UVI with socio-demographic risk factors.· RESULTS： Data were analyzed for 6634/7771 participants after excluding those with bilateral visual impairment. The mean age of the participants was 27.4y（Standard deviation： 17.9y）, 51.9% were women and49.1% were educated. The prevalence of UVI was 7.8%（95% CI： 7.2%- 8.5%）. Uncorrected refractive error（60.8%）, cataract（17.4%） and retinal causes（6.6%） were the leading causes of UVI. On multiple logistic regression analyses, older age, not having education, living in welloff district had significantly higher odds of being associated with UVI. UVI was not associated with gender.·COnCLUSIOn： UVI is common in rural south *** of it is due to cataract and refractive errors, both of which can be addressed at primary and secondary levelsof eye care. Burden of UVI should also be considered in planning eye care services.

Comparative study of Eu^(3+)-activated LnOCl(Ln=La and Gd) phosphors and their Judd-Ofelt analysis

Eu3＋-activated layered LnOCI （Ln=La and Gd） phosphors were synthesized by the conventional solid-state method at relatively low temperature （700 ℃） and shorter duration of 2 h. The structural parameters were refined by the Rietveld refinement analysis and confirmed by the high resolution transmission electron microscopy （HRTEM）. Both the compounds were crystallized in the tetragonal structure with space group P4/nmm （no. 129）. The homogeneity of the elements were ana- lyzed by TEM mapping and found to be uniformly distributed. The photoluminescence spectra revealed that the intensity of 5D0--7F2 transition （619 nm） was more intense in Eu3＋-activated GdOC1 compared to LaOC1. This was due to the property of Gd3＋ ions to act as an intermediate sublattice to facilitate the energy transfer to Eu3＋ ions. Intensity parameters and radiative properties such as transition probabilities, radiative lifetime and branching ratio were calculated using the Judd-Ofelt theory. The CIE color coordinates result revealed that the Eu3＋-activated GdOC1 （0.641, 0.354） phosphor was close to the commercial red phosphors like, Y203：Eu3＋（0.645, 0.347）, Y202S：Eu3＋（0.647, 0.343） and national Television System Committee （nTSC）（0.67, 0.33）. The results suggest that the present GdOCI：Eu3＋ compound acts as a potential candidate for red phosphor materials.

Objective:To review the clinical profile and drug susceptibilities of Salmonella paratyphi A in a tertiary care ***:Retrospective analyses of 113 patients with paratyphoid fever and 101 culture proven Salmonella paratyphi A infection were included in the *** study extended over a period of 3 years(2006-2008).Diagnosis of patients were based on clinical features,serology and blood *** drug susceptibility testing of the isolates were performed by the disc diffusion *** presentation,laboratory parameters,susceptibility patterns of isolates,treatment and clinical response were ***:Of the 113 cases,77(68.4%) were males and 36 were females(32.8%),which included 2 pediatric *** was the most common symptom(100.0%) followed by loose stools(37.2%),headache(35.4%),myalgia(31.9%), pain abdomen(29.2%),dry cough(19.5%) and vomiting(13.3%).All patients were clinically cured. Majority of the isolates(46%) were resistant to cotrimoxazole in 2006,however they became 100% sensitive in 2007 and *** the strains became 100% sensitive to ampicillin and chloramphenicol only in *** 2006 the sensitivity of organisms to ciprofloxacin was 89% but in 2007 and 2008 there has been an increasing resistance to ciprofloxacin(46% and 86%) *** 3 isolates(8.1%) were resistant to ceftriaxone in 2006,showed 100% sensitivity in *** drugs used were ceftriaxone in 100 cases(88.4%) and ciprofloxacin in 13 cases(11.6%).One patient had relapse of paratyphoid fever after treatment with ciprofloxacin which responded to ***:Paratyphoid fever A is one of the emerging infections and a significant problem in *** increasing resistance to fluoroquinolones is *** monitoring of drug susceptibilities is mandatory in instituting appropriate therapy.

Flexible,large-area,and stable perovskite photodetectors have drawn increasing widespread research attention for next-generation wearable and portable optoelectronic ***,high mechanical durability coupled with large device area and enhanced environmental stability has not been demonstrated yet to attain practical ***,a highly bendable,stable,and large-area(3 cm^(2))flexible polystyrene incorporated perovskite photodetector is *** to the formation of a porous polystyrene-perovskite composite film in a single step it allows unprecedented mechanical stability,maintaining 85%of its original photocurrent value after 10,000 bending cycles at a bending angle of 120°.Equally crucial,the solution-processed self-assembled Pt-Au nanochains were developed to provide a simple and fast method of patterning the conductive and flexible electrodes onto the filter *** optimized polystyrene-perovskite photodetector exhibits a high responsivity up to 2.73 A W^(−1),a maximum specific detectivity of 6.2×10^(13) Jones,and a superior switching ratio of 1.0×10^(4).In addition,the polystyrene-perovskite photodetector yields excellent stability under the combined stresses of moisture,ambient air,and room light,and retains 92%of its original performance for over 30 *** these results demonstrate that this work provides a facile and cost-effective approach that paves the way to develop high-performance,stable,and highly flexible optoelectronic devices.

Mineralogical,geochemical and isotopic(Sr and nd) studies on the recently reported ca. 124 Ma'anorogenic lamproite' dyke from the Palanpur area, Kutch seismogenic rift zone, northwestern India, are presented. We propose a new classification for the dyke as a damtjernite(ultramafic lamprophyre; UML)based on its porphyritic-panidiomorphic texture, abundance of phlogopite, presence of nepheline in the groundmass, and the composition of liquidus phases such as olivine, phlogopite, magnetite, and clinopyroxene(diopside). The Palanpur UML is primitive(Mg# =74-77),silica-undersaturated(SiO_2n nature, and is strikingly similar to the ～69 Ma UML dykes and sills of the Tethyan Indus suture zone, which are considered as the earliest yet known manifestations of the Deccan Large Igneous Province(LIP). Bulk-rock(^(87)Sr/^(86)Sr)_i(0.70460-0.70461) and ε_(n)d(t)(+2.56 to-0.69) of the Palanpur UML signify derivation from a slightly depleted mantle source similar to that of asthenospheric magmas such as OIB. This is further attested to by the high incompatible trace element ratios(viz., La/Ba, nb/U, nb/La and Ta/Yb) that are typical of plume-type magmas. However, the neoproterozoic T_(DM) depleted mantle nd model ages( ～655-919 Ma) also necessitate some involvement of a lithospheric mantle component in its genesis. High bulk-rock Fe_2 O_3~t and TiO_2 contents require the involvement of a fertile peridotitic mantle source, whereas high La/Yb(60-80) implies a control by residual garnet. Higher Rb/Sr and lower Ba/Rb suggest phlogopite as a residual phase and high nb and lower La/Sm favour carbonatite, rather than silicate melt as metasomatising agent. Low degrees of partial melting of a primitive garnet lherzolite mantle can account for the observed REE patterns in the Palanpur UML. The Palanpur UML shares a temporal similarity to the Kerguelen plume-derived Rajmahal basalts and associated alkaline rocks from the eastern India. The tectonomagmatic

The canals are designed to transport water to meet irrigation and other water demands or to divert water from surplus basins to deficient basins to meet the ever increasing water demands. Though the positives of canal network are increase in agricultural output and improvement in quality of life, the negatives of canal introduction and irrigation, along its route, are inherent problems of water logging and salinity due to seepage from canals and the irrigation, when not managed properly. To plan strategies to prevent waterlogging and salinity, it is necessary to predict, in advance, the probable area which would be affected due to seepage. This paper presents a methodology to predict the area prone to water logging due to seepage from canal by using 2D seepage solutions to 3D field problem. The available analytical solutions for seepage from canals founded on pervious medium and asymmetrically placed drains, have been utilized. The area, prone to waterlogging, has been mapped using GIS.
