Spatiotemporal Distribution of Cladocera and Rotifer of the Mangrove Waters of Mouanko (Coastal Cameroon): Influence of Some Abiotic Variables

The Mouanko mangrove is subjected to major anthropogenic activities such as agriculture, fishing and deforestation, hence information on Cladocerans and Rotifers amongst other aquatic organisms in order to monitor and manage this ecosystem is vital. The aim of this work is to study the physicochemical parameters of the environment that influence the diversity and spatiotemporal distribution of Cladocerans and Rotifers in the mangrove waters of Mouanko. This study was carried out from November 2019 to October 2020 at 8 sampling stations. Both biological and physico-chemical sampling and analyses were done following standard recommendations. The results of the phyico-chemical analyses revealed that the waters of the Mouanko mangroves were slightly basic (7.64 ± 0.71 UC), moderately oxygenated (69.56% ± 14.29%) with low levels of nutrients [ NO -2 (0. 06 ± 0.05 mg/L), NH+4 (0.39 ± 0.3 mg/L) and PO3-4 (up to 0.12 mg/L)] and high values of electrical conductivity (up to 6531.04 μS/cm), salinity (up to 3.71‰). 15 species of Cladocerans and 30 species of Rotifers were identified accounting for a total abundance of 612 ind/L. The species richness was higher in freshwater influenced zones (40 taxa) compared to marinewater influenced zones (17 taxa). Among these species, the Cladocera, Penilia avirostris was the most abundant in marinewater influenced zones (84 ind/L) while the Rotifer, Keratella tecta was the most abundant in freshwater influenced zones (64 ind/L). Shannon-Weaver’s diversity and Pielou’s equitability indices indicated that freshwater influenced zones host a diverse community with a tendency towards equi-partition of species while marinewater influenced zones revealed the opposite. Factors Associated with Low Use of Insecticide-Treated Nets among Children under 5 Years of Age in Fo-Boure (Benin) in 2019

Despite the free distribution of insecticide impregnated nets, malaria is still the cause of many deaths, particularly among children under 5 years old, casting doubt on the real use of these mosquito nets by parents. The present work aimed to identify the factors associated with the low use of mosquito nets. This was a cross-sectional study with an analytical aim, carried out in the locality of Fô-Bouré (Sinendé) in 2019 among children under 5 years old and their parents. A cluster random sampling was carried out according to the WHO technique. The dependent variable was the low use of LLINs and the independent variables were: socio-demographic, economic, relative to parents’ knowledge of the causes and control methods of malaria. Results: The factors identified as associated with the low use of LLINs were: female sex (p = 0.0059), low level of education (p = 0.0001), free mode of acquisition (p = 0.0476), poor knowledge of control methods (p = 0.0389), type of house: mud or tent house (p = 0.0034), unsanitary immediate environment (p = 0.0002) and children’s evening dressing style (p = 0.0001). Conclusion: A global development policy, especially in terms of education, sanitation and housing improvement as recommended by the “Roll Back Malaria” initiative is necessary to improve the rate of insecticide impregnated nets use. .

This study allowed us to highlight the level of pollution of a BAYA River water near several poultry farms and the sizing of an anaerobic digester that will be able to treat chicken manure from a poultry farm (BRIN FOUNDATION). To evaluate this pollution, the parameters such as ammonium (NH4+), Phosphate (PO43-), Biochemical Oxygen Demand (DBO5) and Nitrate (NO3-) were determined. For sampling point P1, the concentrations in mg/L of these parameters are (25.00 ± 4.25), (0.40 ± 0.20), (98.00 ± 6.35) and (96.00 ± 5.35), respectively. On the other hand, for sampling point P2, the concentrations in mg/L of these parameters are respectively (33.00 ± 9.05), (0.70 ± 0.12), (123 ± 7.13) and (93 ± 7.10). These values indicate a strong organic pollution of the BAYA River. The determination of the different concentrations of the organic pollution parameters allowed us to evaluate the degradation and the quality of the water of the BAYA River water, by the poultry activity. However, considering the physicochemical properties of the waste (chicken manure), which is the main source of organic pollution, we have considered an energy recovery through the production of biogas. This requires the design, sizing, and implementation of an anaerobic digester in a poultry farm. Therefore, the project would require the construction of an adapted masonry type anaerobic digester with a capacity of 10 m3.

Objective:Ipomoea batatas(L.)*** a food plant used in African traditional medicine to treat cardiovascular diseases and related *** assessed the hypolipidemic and anti-atherosclerogenic properties of the aqueous extract of *** leaves in a rat model of diet-induced ***:Hypercholesterolemia was induced in male Wistar rats by exclusive feeding with a cholesterolenriched(1%)standard diet for four ***,rats were treated once daily(per os)with *** extract at doses of 400,500 and 600 mg/kg or with atorvastatin(2 mg/kg),for four *** treatment,animals were observed for another four weeks and then *** were excised and processed for histopathological studies,and blood glucose level and lipid profile were ***:Hypercholesterolemic animals experienced a 21.5%faster increase in body weight,significant increases in blood glucose and blood lipids(148.94%triglycerides,196.97%high-density lipoprotein cholesterol,773.04%low-density lipoprotein cholesterol,148.93%very low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and 210.42%total cholesterol),and increases in aorta thickness and atherosclerotic plaque sizes compared to rats fed standard *** of hypercholesterolemic rats with the extract mitigated these alterations and restored blood glucose and blood lipid levels to normocholesterolemic ***:Our findings suggest that *** leaves have hypolipidemic and anti-atherosclerogenic properties and justify their use in traditional medicine.

Background: In African cities, chronic exposure to pollutants is the most common public health problem faced daily by motorcycle taxi drivers. In Benin, studies conducted on motorcycle drivers, have shown the presence of nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, volatile organic compounds and particulate matter in ambient air, which may affect lung function. Aims: This study aims to diagnose potential respiratory problems among 48 motorcycle taxi drivers (47.02 ± 8.75 years) compared to a control group made up of 52 people (46.38 ± 8.81 years) in Porto-Novo, Benin. Methods: A questionnaire, two exploration pulmonary function tests and two 6-minute walk tests were used to identify symptoms and changes in respiratory variables that reveal the existence of bronchospasm. Results: The frequency of respiratory symptoms noted among motorcycle taxi drivers is higher than that recorded among members of the control group. We observed that motorcycle drivers at rest and after physical effort have significantly lower respiratory variables (FVC, FEV1, PEF, FEF25-75, FEF50 and FEF25) (p < 0.05) than those recoded in control group. Conclusion: It can therefore be concluded that, because of the relatively long duration of exposure among motorcycle taxi drivers, the inhalation of automobile pollutants, may cause respiratory problems in this population.

Use of legume trees can improve soil quality in degraded pastures. The aim of this study was to charac- terize C and N mineralization kinetics and estimate the potentially mineralizable C and N in soil under Mimosa caesalpiniifolia Benth. and Acacia auriculiformis A. Cunn. ex Benth. secondary forest and pasture in red-yellow latosols in southeast Brazil. We conducted a laboratory aerobic incubation experiment using a completely ran- domized design of four replicates and four types of plant cover using a modified version of the Stanford and Smith technique （1972） to study C and N mineralization potential. Potentially mineralizable N （No） ranged from 135 to 170 mg kg-1. The predominant form of mineral N for all types of plant cover was N-NO3-. M. caesalpiniifolia was the only species that had a positive influence on N min- eralization. Neither of the legumes influenced C mineral- ization in pasture or secondary forest. The model of N mineralization corresponded to a sigmoidal curve while C mineralization corresponded to an exponential curve, revealing that the N and C mineralization processes were distinct. N mineralized by M. caesalpiniifolia （216 kg ofN ha-1） was adequate to meet the N requirement for a livestock-forest system.

The curing behavior of lignin-based phenol-formaldehyde (LPF) resin with different contents of nano-crystalline cellulose (NCC) was studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) at different heating rates (5, 10 and 20°C/min) and the bonding property was evaluated by the wet shear strength and wood failure of two-ply plywood panels after soaking in water (48 hours at room temperature and followed by 1-hour boiling). The test results indicated that the NCC content had little influence on the peak temperature, activation energy and the total heat of reaction of LPF resin at 5 and 10°C/min. But at 20°C/min, LPF0.00% (LPF resin without NCC) showed the highest total heat of reaction, while LPF0.25% (LPF resin containing 0.25% NCC content) and LPF0.50% (LPF resin containing 0.50% NCC content) gave the lowest value. The wet shear strength was affected by the NCC content to a certain extent. With regard to the results of one-way analysis of variance, the bonding quality could be improved by NCC and the optimum NCC content ranged from 0.25% to 0.50%. The wood failure was also affected by the NCC content, but the trend with respect to NCC content was not clear.
