The increasing integration of renewable energy sources into current power systems has posed the challenge of adequately representing the statistical properties associated with their variable power generation. In this paper, a novel procedure is proposed to select a proper synthetic time series generation model for renewable energy sources to analyze power system problems. The procedure takes advantage of the objective of the specific analysis to be performed and the statistical characteristics of the available time series. The aim is to determine the suitable model to be used for generating synthetic time series of renewable energy sources. A set of indicators is proposed to verify that the statistical properties of synthetic time series fit the statistical properties of the original data. The proposal can be integrated into systematic tools available for data analysis without compromising the representation of the statistical properties of the original time series. The procedure is tested using real data from the New Zealand power system in a mid-term analysis on integrating wind power plants into the power system. The results show that the proposed procedure reduces the error obtained in analyzing power systems compared with reference models.

This review concentrates on different aspects of malaria chemoprophylaxis,namely drug combinations,resistance,impact of malaria prevention in pregnancy and cost effectiveness. A MEDLINE search was performed for all articles with the key word ’Malaria’ in the title field and ’prophylaxis’ in any *** search was restricted to articles published in English within the last decade(1999-2009).Data sources included review articles published in core clinical journals,cohort studies,interventional studies,case control studies and cross sectional analyses. The mechanism of action,trial evidence of efficacy,side effects and geographical distribution of resistance is discussed for each prophylactic drug *** of prophylaxis in pregnancy and the cost considerations are discussed under two separate sub topics.

This paper presents a method for estimating the solar capture capacity of dwell-ings using the central urban area of Concepción,Chile,as a case study in order to promote self-generation of energy by *** method takes into account the growing domestic energy demand and the possibility of meeting this demand through integrated solar energy collection into buildings using different *** methodology considers a study of the potential incoming solar radiation on buildings according to their geographical location and the surrounding *** capacity for solar capture is then estimated for different dwelling types accord-ing to their ***,the energy contribution provided by differ-ent technologies(solar thermal,photovoltaic and hybrid)is identified in relation to the main average energy demands for electricity,water and space ***,systems for each dwelling are recommended in an urban map available *** development is based on climate information,cartography,aerial photo-graphs,surveys,housing models,technical standards,standardised calculations and dynamic simulations,implemented according to building layouts from an online Geographic Information System(GIS).The housing types are categorised in an urban map that relates household demands and the contribution of different solar energy *** to the estimates calculated,the residential units in the study offer sufficient solar capacity to supply between 40 and 60%of their energy consumption,especially in detached houses using roof-mounted hybrid systems.

Cellulosic fibres from coffee(CF)and rice(RF)husks have been obtained applying chemical treatments and characterized as to their microstructure and thermal *** materials have been incorporated into glycerol plasticised thermoplastic starch(TpS)films obtained by melt blending and compression moulding at 1 wt%,5 wt%and 10 wt%.Microstructure,thermal behaviour and optical,tensile and barrier properties of the composites were *** kinds of micro-fibres improve the film stiffness while reduced the film ***,CF better maintained the film ductility at 1 and 5 wt%.A network of fine oriented fibres was observed on the surface of the films,while internal fibres exhibited a good adherence to the polymer *** water vapour permeability of TpS films was not reduced in composites,although oxygen permeability was lowered by about 17%.Film transparency decreased by fibre addition in the UVVIS *** stability of composites was slightly higher than net TpS films.

predicting the population dynamics of insects in natural conditions is es- sential for their management or preservation, and temperature-dependent development models contribute to achieving this. In this research the effects of temperature and soil moisture content on egg development and hatching of Clavipalpus ursinus （Blanchard） were evaluated. The eggs were exposed to seven temperature treatments with averages of 7.2, 13.0, 15.5, 19.7, 20.6, 22.0 and 25.3~C, in combination with three soil moisture contents of 40%, 60% and 80%. A linear and two non-linear （Lactin and Briere） models were evaluated in order to determine the thermal requirements of this developmental stage. Temperature affected significantly the time of development and egg hatching, while no significant effect was observed for moisture content. Thermal requirements were set as： 7.2℃ for lower developmental threshold, 20.6℃ for optimum developmental threshold, 25.3℃ for maximum temperature and 344.83 degree-days for the thermal constant. The linear model described satisfactorily egg development at intermediate temperatures; nev- ertheless, a slightly better fit of the observed data was obtained with the Lactin model. Egg development took place inside a narrow range of temperatures. Consequently, an increment of soil temperature could generate a negative impact on the population size of this species or changes in its biological parameters.

Early flowering and flower abundance have long been considered desirable traits in eucalypt breeding programs. In particular, flowers of Eucalyptus cladocalyx provide a nectar source for the production of honey in arid ecosystems. To identify inter-simple sequence repeat （ISSR） markers that are associated with early flowering and flower abundance in the southern Atacama Desert, we used a sample of 47 trees, representing five Australian prove- nances of E. cladocalyx. A unified mixed linear model （which considered the effect of genetic structure and the kinship relationship among trees） revealed that three loci were significantly associated with early flowering, which accounted for 10-16 % of the phenotypic variation, while two loci accounted for 11-13 % in flowering intensity. Locus ISO1-500 bp was associated with both flowering traits. This result is consistent with our previous findings indicating that marker-assisted selection on early flowering should have significant and positive impact on flowering intensity. The application of marker-assisted selection to identify trees that flower early and intensively may increase honey production, a resource that generates additional income for the local farmers of the southern Atacama Desert.

Temporal dynamics of shallow subtidal meiobenthos from a beach in Tenerife (Canary Islands, northeast Atlantic Ocean)

A shallow subtidal （3 m deep） meiofaunal assemblage in Los Abrigos Bay, Tenerife, Canary Islands was sam- pled during May 2000-April 2001. The main aims were to （1） find temporal variations in meiofaunal assem- blage structure and overall abundance, as well as in the most abundant meiofaunal species throughout the study period, and （2） identify environmental variables （sedimentary composition, organic matter content, and total nitrogen） that better explain meiofaunal assemblage structure during the study year. The most abundant species were the nematodes Siphonolaimus sp. 2 and Catanema sp., which represented 46.2% of the overall meiofaunal abundances and varied significantly throughout the study duration. Overall meio- faunal abundance and the most abundant taxonomic groups （nematodes, copepods, and oligochaetes） showed significant temporal variations during the study period. Nematodes overwhelmingly dominated during the study period, ranging from 78% in May to 97.34% in February. Multivariate analyses showed seasonality in meiofaunal community structure during the study year, with the lowest abundances in May.
