Studies have confirmed that bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells （MSCs） can be used for treatment of several nervous system diseases. However, isolation of bone marrow-derived MSCs （BMSCs） is an invasive and painful process and the yield is very low. Therefore, there is a need to search for other alterative stem cell sources. Adipose-derived MSCs （ADSCs） have phenotypic and gene expression profiles similar to those of BMSCs. The production of ADSCs is greater than that of BMSCs, and ADSCs proliferate faster than BMSCs. To compare the effects of venous grafts containing BMSCs or ADSCs on sciatic nerve injury, in this study, rats were randomly divided into four groups： sham （only sciatic nerve exposed）, Matrigel （Mg; sciatic nerve injury ＋ intravenous transplantation of Mg vehicle）, ADSCs （sciatic nerve injury ＋ intravenous Mg containing ADSCs）, and BMSCs （sciatic nerve injury ＋ intravenous Mg containing BMSCs） groups. Sciatic functional index was calculated to evaluate the function of injured sciatic nerve. Morphologic characteristics of nerves distal to the lesion were observed by toluidine blue staining. Spinal motor neurons labeled with Fluoro-gold were quantitatively assessed. Compared with sham-operated rats, sciatic functional index was lower, the density of small-diameter fibers was significantly increased, and the number of motor neurons significantly decreased in rats with sciatic nerve injury. Neither ADSCs nor BMSCs significantly improved the sciatic nerve function of rats with sciatic nerve injury,increased fiber density, fiber diameters, axonal diameters, myelin sheath thickness, and g ratios （axonal diameter/fiber diameter ratios） in the sciatic nerve distal to the lesion site. There was no significant difference in the number of spinal motor neurons among ADSCs, BMSCs and Mg groups. These results suggest that neither BMSCs nor ADSCs provide satisfactory results for peripheral nerve repair when using Mg as the conductor for engraftment.

The confocal microscopy technique was applied for nonlinear optical characterization of single β-barium-borate（β-BBO） nanocrystals. The experimental setup allows measurements of the laser polarization-selective secondharmonic（SH） generation, and the results can be used to determine the nanocrystals＇ c-axis orientation, as well as to obtain information about their second-order susceptibility χ^（2）. The dependence of the SH signal on the laser polarization allowed the discrimination of individual particles from aggregates. The data were fitted using a model that takes into account the BBO properties and the experimental setup characteristics considering（i） the electrostatic approximation,（ii） the effects of the microscope objective used to focus the light on the sample in an epi-geometry configuration, and（iii） the symmetry of χ^（2） for the β-BBO nanocrystals. A signal at the third-harmonic frequency was also detected, but it was too weak to be studied in detail.

The transformation of quantitative variables into categories is a common practice in both experimental and observational studies. The typical procedure is to create groups by splitting the original variable distribution at some cut point on the scale of measurement (e.g. mean, median, mode). Allegedly, dichotomization improves causal inference by simplifying statistical analyses. In this article, we address some of the adverse consequences of recoding quantitative variables into categories. In particular, we provide evidence that categorization usually leads to inefficient and biased estimates. We believe that considerable progress in our understanding of data analysis can occur if scholars follow the recommendations presented in this article. The recodification of quantitative variables as categorical is a poor methodological strategy, and scientists must stay away from it.

Chromosomal alterations are the main causes of genetic diseases. One of the characteristics of certain genetic syndromes is ID （intellectual disability） presented by the individual in varying degrees. The study of the ID, its etiology, association or not with chromosomal abnormalities and a clinical diagnosis associated with the examination of karyotype are important aspects to consider when providing genetic counseling for families. Due to the lack of similar studies and of easy access to cytogenetic services for the Amazonian population, this study aimed to contribute to the advancement of this line of study in the state, analyzing the karyotype of individuals with ID, not Down Syndrome treated at the APAE-Manaus and identifying the main types of chromosomal alterations in the individuals analyzed. Analyzes were performed of the clinical diagnosis through investigation of the data from the interview and medical records as well as analysis of the karyotype of 31 patients with non-Down syndrome ID, attended in the APAE-Manaus. Of these subjects, 20 were female and 11 male. The results showed only 2 cases of chromosome abnormalities are detectable by classical cytogenetics, one of mosaic Turner syndrome and one a heterochromatic variant. It is therefore necessary to complement the study with the addition of molecular techniques for the investigation of microdeletions and/or other alterations not detectable through the banding technique, mainly for individuals whose dysmorphisms indicate a suspected syndrome.

grain Yield and Protein Content of Brazilian Cowpea genotypes under Diverse Ugandan Environments

Twenty nine cowpea genotypes, including four Ugandan genotypes, were evaluated for grain yield, protein stability and adaptability under diverse environments in a randomized complete block design with three replications. The analysis showed that cowpea grain yield and protein content were significantly (P genotypes (g), environments (E), and interaction (g x E). genotypes C2T and C2I had the highest grain yield and protein content respectively, but both were only adapted to specific environments. genotypes C1J, C1V, C2A, C2O, and C2R were adapted to three environments with high yield which was stable. Similarly, genotypes BRS Pujante, C1J, C2q and CIT also expressed high protein levels with high stability and wide adaptability. The study further revealed that Namulonge 2014B, Serere 2014A, Serere 2014B and Serere were the most favorable environments for obtaining high yield and protein respectively, because at these four environments, mean yield and protein were higher than the overall mean. All Brazilian genotypes had high protein levels compared to Ugandan genotypes indicating the potential of Brazilian genotypes in improving cowpea seed protein content in Uganda.

g>Introduction: g>Cancer is one of the most devastating pathologies to affect the breast. Mastectomy stigmas are associated with depression, body image dysmorphia, and decreasing quality of life. BREAST-q is a PROM (Patient Reported Outcome Measures) that has proven useful in measuring satisfaction with breast reconstruction results from the patient’s point of view. g>Objectives:g> To measure the satisfaction index and improvement in quality of life after breast reconstruction for breast cancer sequelae in our hospital in the last 5 years.g> Materials and Methods:g> Descriptive Study that includes patients with Breast cancer diagnosis that underwent mastectomy and breast reconstruction (prosthesis or autologous tissue) in “Hospital Central Sur de Petroleos Mexicanos” (January 2015 to January 2020), whose satisfaction index was measured with BREAST-q one year after reconstruction. g>Results:g> 153 patients were included in the analysis. Mean global satisfaction was 74 points. We observed a tendency towards higher psychosocial, sexual and appearance satisfaction in patients who underwent reconstruction with autologous tissue. The mean satisfaction with provided information was 64 points and with the medical team > 90 points. g>Conclusion:g> Breast reconstruction is associated to a high satisfaction index and quality of life improvement regardless of the technique. BREAST-q proved to be useful in evaluating patient experience and it helped us identify areas of opportunity to improve our care.
