This paper presents a method for determining the percentage of coarse aggregate in concrete specimens by image processing. The test pieces were produced with the aim of obtaining images of their cross sections through a scanner table. In order to increase the contrast between mortar and coarse aggregate the sliced surfaces were treated with the phenolphthale in solution. The images obtained in the scanner were processed in a program developed with MATLAB （matrix laboratory）. The average coarse aggregate in each section and the mean of coarse aggregate per test body were calculated. With the results, it was revealed that the method returned satisfying results when compared to the original trace of the concrete.

Antifungal Activity of Oleoresin and Fractions of Pinus elliottii Engelm and Pinus tropicalis against Phytopathogens

Microorganism resistance to the existing products is yet another difficulty that agriculturalists have to deal with. In this context, the search for new agricultural products that can fight phytopathogens has become increasingly important. Plants have played an important role in this process, because they can serve as a source of new compounds for drug discovery. Plants belonging to the genus Pinus produce an oleoresin that protects the plant against herbivores and pathogens. With a view to developing products that can combat fungal pathogens without harming the environment, this work aimed to evaluate the antifungal activity of the oleoresins and fractions of Pinus elliottii Engelm and Pinus tropicalis against phytopathogens. The methodology based on NCCLS M38-A standards aided antifungal activity assessment. The microdilution method helped to determine the Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) and Minimum Fungicidal Concentration (MFC). The oleoresins of P. elliottii and P. tropicalis afforded the most significant results—they displayed fungicidal activity against all the tested species. MIC values were promising, especially the MIC of the oleoresin of P. elliottii against S. rolfsii (1.95 μg·mL-1). The MIC values of the oleoresins of P. elliottii and P. tropicalis ranged from 1.95 to 1000 μg·mL-1 and from 31.25 to 250 μg·mL-1, respectively. Fraction PT2 of P. tropicalis furnished the best results among all the assayed fractions: MIC values lay between 125 and 500 μg·mL-11. In conclusion, the oleoresin of P. tropicalis is a promising source of new antifungal agents for application in the treatment of phytopathogenic infections.

This work aimed to find quantitative phenotypic traits that can be used to discriminate the levels of resistance/susceptibility to B. bovis and B. bigemina in two groups of cattle presenting the highest (H) or lowest (L) infection levels and Rhipicephalus microplus ticks count. The animals were selected from a previous study of 50 Canchim (5/8 Charolais/zebu) heifers raised in an endemic area for these parasites. These animals were evaluated regarding their TNFα, IL10, IFN-γ, IL12 and iNOS mRNA levels. No differences were found between these groups regarding TNFα, IFN-γ, IL12β or iNOS transcripts. However, the IL10 transcripts were significantly higher in the H group compared to the L group. Moreover, significant correlation coefficients were observed between B. bovis loads and both IL10 and IFN-γ transcripts, while no correlations were found for B. bigemina loads and all tested immune-related transcripts, suggesting that differential IL10 mRNA profiles were closely associated to B. bovis loads. Our results have contributed to a better understanding of the immune responses against Babesia infection, as we demonstrated that the IL10 cytokine levels might also influence or be influenced by parasitemia levels in persistently infected animals.

The development of measurement geometry for medical X-ray computed tomography （CT） scanners was carried out from the first to the fourth-generation. This concept has also been applied for imaging of industrial processes such as pipe flows or for improving design, operation, optimization and troubleshooting. Nowadays, gamma CT permits to visualize failure equipment points in three-dimensional analysis and in sections of chemical and petrochemical industries. The aim of this work is the development of the mechanical system on a third-generation industrial CT scanner to analyze laboratorial process columns which perform highly efficient separation, turning the ^6oCo, ^75Se, ^137Cs and/or ^192Ir sealed gamma-ray source（s） and the NaI（Tl） multidetector array. It also has a translation movement along the column axis to obtain as many slices of the process flow as needed. The mechanical assembly for this third-generation industrial CT scanner is comprised by strength and rigidity structural frame in stainless and carbon steels, rotating table, source shield and collimator with pneumatic exposure system, spur gear system, translator, rotary stage, drives and stepper motors. The use of suitable spur gears has given a good repeatability and high accuracy in the degree of veracity. The data acquisition boards, mechanical control interfaces, software for movement control and image reconstruction were specially development. A multiphase phantom capable to be setting with solid, liquid and gas was testing. The scanner was setting for 90 views and 19 projections for each detector totalizing 11,970 projections. Experiments to determine the linear attenuation coefficients of the phantom were carried out which applied the Lambert-Beer principle. Results showed that it was possible to distinguish between the phases even the polymethylmethacrylate and the water have very similar density and linear attenuation coefficients.
