Effect of bio-tissue deformation behavior due to intratumoral injection on magnetic hyperthermia

Thermal damage of malignant tissue is generally determined not only by the characteristics of bio-tissues and nanoparticles but also the nanofluid concentration distributions due to different injection methods during magnetic *** latter has more advantages in improving the therapeutic effect with respect to the former since it is a determining factor for the uniformity of nanofluid concentration distribution inside the tumor *** study investigates the effect of bio-tissue deformation due to intratumoral injection on the thermal damage behavior and treatment temperature distribution during magnetic hyperthermia,in which both the bio-tissue deformation due to nanofluid injection and the mass diffusion after injection behavior are taken into *** nanofluid flow behavior is illustrated by two different theoretical models in this study,which are Navier–Stokes equation inside syringe needle and modified Darcy’s law inside *** diffusion behavior after nanofluid injection is expressed by a modified convection–diffusion equation.A proposed three-dimensional liver model based on the angiographic data is set to be the research object in this study,in which all bio-tissues are assumed to be deformable porous *** results demonstrate that the injection point for syringe needle can generally achieve the maximum value in the tissue pressure,deformation degree,and interstitial flow velocity during the injection process,all of which then drop sharply with the distance away from the injection *** addition to the bio-tissue deformation due to injection behavior,the treatment temperature is also highly relevant to determine both the diffusion duration and blood perfusion rate due to the thermal damage during the therapy.

Characterization of Chitotriosidase Enzyme Activity in the Serum of the American Alligator (<i>Alligator mississippiensis</i>)

Chitotriosidase (ChT) is an endoglucosaminidase enzyme that cleaves chitinous substrates and has been strongly associated with innate immune activity and the ability to identify non-selftissues. This enzyme activity was detected and characterized the serum from the American alligator (Alligator mississippiensis) using a fluorometric probe. Alligator serum exhibited volume-dependent activity, with activity (2.1 ± 0.3 μmol/min) observed at dilutions as low as a 1:150, and maximum activity (5.2 ± 0.6 μmol/min) measured at a dilution of 1:30. Alligator serum ChT showed linear activity for approximately 20 min, at which time activity decreased exponentially, presumably due to the depletion of substrate. In addition, the ChT activity in alligator serum was temperature-dependent with low activity at 5°C, a sharp increase from 10°C - 30°C, and maximal activity from 30°C - 40°C. The activity was inhibited in the presence of water-soluble chitin, but not mannan, indicating the specificity of the enzyme. The presence of ChT in alligator serum is likely to be partially responsible for the potent innate immune system of these crocodylians, and particularly antifungal activities.

Despite serving as a major inorganic nitrogen source for plants,ammonium causes toxicity at elevated con-centrations,inhibiting root elongation early *** previous studies have shown that ammonium-inhibited root development relates to ammonium uptake and formation of reactive oxygen species(ROS)in roots,it remains unclear about the mechanisms underlying the repression of root growth and how plants cope with this inhibitory effect of *** this study,we demonstrate that ammonium-induced apo-plastic acidification co-localizes with Fe precipitation and hydrogen peroxide(H_(2)O_(2))accumulation along the stele of the elongation and differentiation zone in root tips,indicating Fe-dependent ROS *** screening ammonium sensitivity in T-DNA insertion lines of ammonium-responsive genes,we identified PDX1.1,which is upregulated by ammonium in the root stele and whose product catalyzes de novo biosyn-thesis of vitamin *** growth of pdx1.1 mutants is hypersensitive to ammonium,while chemical complementation or overexpression of PDX1.1 restores root *** salvage strategy requires non-phosphorylated forms of vitamin B6 that are able to quench ROS and rescue root growth from ammo-nium ***,these results suggest that PDX1.1-mediated synthesis of non-phosphorylated B6 vitamers acts as a primary strategy to protect roots from ammonium-dependent ROS formation.

Motion Analysis Technologies for Biomechanical Gait and Postural Analysis in Ballet

The dominant element in ballet is the search for flawless performance. The specific training required from early years may cause some changes compared to the normal human anatomy and physiology. The aim of this study was to investigate the potential of motion analysis technologies for the evaluation of frequent changes in biomechanics of posture and dance. This paper presents an overview of the literature on the main postural compensation employed by the dancer; more specifically on the training effect of the fundamental basic techniques in ballet. It then focuses on the characteristics and potential of motion analysis technologies for the biomechanical evaluation of the dancer. The technologies investigated in this study are the optoelectronic system of gait analysis, which is one of the most advanced technologies for multifactorial motion analysis, integrated with the use of the force platform and the electromyography. These technologies enable a quantitative three-dimensional integrated multifactorial motion analysis in relation to kinematics and dynamics. Through specific systems of motion analysis, the instrumental analysis can describe objectively and with reasonable accuracy the biomechanics, the postural compensation, and the gait of the dancer.

Lot Sizing in Production Scheduling at a Personal Protection Equipment Company

This work presents an optimization model to support decisions during production planning and control in the personal protective equipment (PPE) industry (in particular, gloves). A case study was carried out at a Brazilian company with the aim of increasing productivity and improving customer service with respect to meeting deadlines. In this case study, the mixed integer linear programming model of Luche (2009) was revisited. A new model for single-stage lot sizing was applied to the production scheduling of gloves. Optimizing this scheduling was not a simple task because of the scale of the equipment setup time, the diversity of the products and the deadlines for the orders. The model was implemented in GAMS IDE and solved by CPLEX 12. The model and the associated heuristic produce better solutions than those currently used by the company.

Common bile duct schwannoma:A case report and review of literature

Schwannoma is a myelin sheath tumor complicated with neurofibroma, neurofibromatosis and neurogenic sarcoma. Peripheral nerve sheath tumors represent 2%-6% of gastrointestinal tract stromal tumors (GIST), but there are deficient data about location of neurogenic tumors in the biliary system and only nine cases of schwannoma of the extrahepatic biliary tract have been reported. These tumors are clinically non-specific. They are usually symptomatic by compressing the close or adjacent structures when being retroperitoneal, and their preoperative diagnosis is extremely difficult. This paper reviews the literature data and describes a case of schwannoma of the common bile duct associated with cholestasis in a healthy young woman, diagnosed and treated in our department. This case is of interest on account of the complexity of its diagnosis and the atypical macroscopic growth pattern of the tumor.

Foveal avascular zone area and parafoveal vessel density measurements in different stages of diabetic retinopathy by optical coherence tomography angiography

AIM：To investigate foveal avascular zone（FAZ）and parafoveal vessel densities（PRVD）by means of optical coherence tomography angiography（OCTA）in diabetic patients with or without diabetic retinopathy（DR）and to assess the reproducibility of FAZ and PRVD ***：Sixty diabetic patients（60 eyes）with different stage of DR（graded according to the International Clinical Severity Scale for DR）and 20 healthy subjects underwent FAZ area and PRVD measurements using OCTA by two experienced *** area in all patients was also assessed using fluorescein angiography（FA）.RESULTS：In subject with proliferative DR and with moderate-severe non proliferative DR,FAZ area was significantly increased compared to healthy controls（P=0.025 and P=0.050 respectively measured with OCTA and P=0.025 and P=0.048 respectively measured with FA）.OCTA showed significantly less inter-observer variability compared to *** correlation coefficient（CCC）for FAZ area measurements was 0.829（95%CI：0.736-0.891）P〈0.001 with FA and 1.000（95%CI：0.999-1.000）P〈0.001with *** was 0.834（95%CI：0.746-0.893）P〈0.001and 0.890（95%CI：0.828-0.930）P〈0.001 for parafoveal superficial and deep vessel density measurements,***：OCTA shows progressive increase of FAZ area and reduction of PRVD in both superficial and deep plexus at increasing DR *** area and PRVD measurements using OCTA are highly reproducible.

The Use of Exergames for Adaptive Physical Activity among the Elderly

The research program proposed in this study promotes the development of a pilot study for the promotion of physical and motor activities for the elderly, with particular reference to the over 80 years old. The study aims to promote the practice of adapted physical activity for the elderly and proposes the design and development of specific exergames for the promotion of a healthy and active lifestyle among the elderly even when they can not do motor activities in dedicated places such as gyms or specialized centers or adequate natural environments. The project involved elderly people living in the Salerno area who can not do motor activity in a regular way due to cultural, socio-economic, environmental or personal reasons. The identification of the experimental group for the pilot study required a preliminary survey on the levels of autonomy, intellectual efficiency and motor functioning： Instrumental activities of daily living, activities of daily living, short portable mental status questionnaire, clock drawing test, geriatric depression scale （GDS-15） and the short physical performance battery were administered. A specific program of adapted physical activities was planned and realized for 8 months. The study could open interesting perspectives of research that involve interesting results also from a social point of view.

Study of the Effect of Different Solids Load on the Optimum pH during Enzymatic Hydrolysis of Steam Exploded Corn Stover

The understanding of enzymatic saccharification of pretreated lignocellulosic material is of great importance. There are several important commercially available enzymes in the market that are used for this purpose. The conditions of pH and temperature performance of any particular enzyme are very well defined and it is clearly indicated by its manufacturer and it depends on the type of enzyme or enzymes in the complex pool. It is well know that commercial cellulases work best at pH around 4.8-5.0 and as a consequence this is widely used in the industry and the literature. In this study it was found that optimum pH of cellulases is different than that recommended by its manufacturer at higher solids load saccharification. The optimum pH changes depending on the consistency or solids loads of the matrix where the enzyme is acting upon. Steam exploded corn stover was tested with cellulases and xylanases at different pH, consistencies and ionic strength. Results showed that the optimum pH at lower consistency （1% w/w） is the same as the one recommended by the manufacturer and in the literature; however at higher consistency the value obtained was higher （pH 5.5 to pH 6.5） instead ofpH 4.8. The difference could represent up to 30-50% higher yields and hence of great importance for the economics of second generation fuel production. An explanation of this behavior could be associated with the Donnan effect theory. This effect indicates that the presence of charged groups in the fiber matrix creates a pH gradient within the slurry. If the charged groups are negatively charged this would create a local or internal pH lower than the surrounding liquid pH. This could explain why by reducing the concentration of H^＋ higher enzymatic conversion yields were observed.
