Geographical inhomogeneity and temporal variability of mixing property and driving mechanism in the Arctic Ocean

Upper ocean mixing plays a key role in the atmosphere-ocean heat transfer and sea ice extent and thickness via modulating the upper ocean temperatures in the Arctic *** of diffusivities in the Arctic that directly indicate the ocean mixing properties are ***,the spatiotemporal pattern and magnitude of diapycnal diffusivities and kinetic energy dissipation rates in the upper Arctic Ocean are important for atmosphere-ocean heat transfers and sea ice *** were first estimated from the Ice-Tethered Profilers dataset(2005–2019)using a strain-based fine-scale *** resultant mixing properties showed signifi cant geographical inhomogeneity and temporal *** diff usivities and dissipation rates in the Atlantic sector of the Arctic Ocean were stronger than those on the Pacific *** in the Atlantic sector increased significantly during the observation period;whereas in the Pacific sector,it weakened before 2011 and then *** impact factors include wind,sea ice,near inertial waves,and stratifi cation,while their relative contributions vary between the two sectors of the Arctic *** the Atlantic sector,turbulent mixing dominated,while in the Pacific sector,turbulent mixing was inhibited by strong stratification prior to 2011,and is able to overcome the stratifi cation gradually after *** vertical turbulent heat fl ux constantly increased in the Atlantic sector year by year,while it decreased in the Pacific sector post *** estimated heat flux variability induced by enhanced turbulent mixing is expected to continue to diminish sea ice in the near future.

Hydro-mechanical interaction effects and channelling in threedimensional fracture networks undergoing growth and nucleation

Library and Information Science Papers Discussed on Twitter: A new Network-based Approach for Measuring Public Attention

Purpose: In recent years, one can witness a trend in research evaluation to measure the impact on society or attention to research by society(beyond science). We address the following question: can Twitter be meaningfully used for the mapping of public and scientific discourses?Design/methodology/approach: Recently, Haunschild et al.(2019) introduced a new network-oriented approach for using Twitter data in research evaluation. Such a procedure can be used to measure the public discussion around a specific field or topic. In this study, we used all papers published in the Web of Science(WoS, Clarivate Analytics) subject category Information Science & Library Science to explore the publicly discussed topics from the area of library and information science(LIS) in comparison to the topics used by scholars in their publications in this ***: The results show that LIS papers are represented rather well on Twitter. Similar topics appear in the networks of author keywords of all LIS papers, not tweeted LIS papers, and tweeted LIS papers. Extensive documentation has been developed to support the benefits of daylight for building ***,the high performance building industry has shown a trend towards prioritizing better daylighting *** response to this trend,the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design(LEED)rating system now addresses daylighting and views as one of the criteria for ***,effective daylighting has its challenges-most importantly addressing the issue of *** paper discusses the issue of glare and its relationship with requirements for effective daylighting within the criteria of the LEED rating *** this study,a LEED certified building on Montana State University’s campus was considered as a case *** paper conducts an analysis by comparing the results obtained from compliance procedures for LEED with independent evaluations of glare using simulation and post occupancy evaluation *** paper concludes that the‘illuminance simulation’option provided in the current version of LEED(LEED v4)for compliance does not adequately address the issue of *** paper provides recommendations to improve the LEED rating system for indoor environmental quality which include:the incorporation of glare assessment in the evaluation procedures of daylighting and views;the use of dynamic simulations that incorporate climatic conditions in the evaluation of daylighting;and evaluating glare in early stages of design by using simulation tools.

Staging the axilla in women with breast cancer: the utility of preoperative ultrasound-guided needle biopsy

Preoperative staging of the axilla in women with invasive breast cancer using ultrasound-guided needle biopsy(UNB) identifies approximately 50% of patients with axillary nodal metastases prior to surgical intervention. Although moderately sensitive, it is a highly specific staging strategy that is rarely falsely-positive, hence a positive UNB allows patients to be triaged to axillary lymph-node dissection(ALND) avoiding potentially unnecessary sentinel node biopsy(SNB). In this review, we extend our previous work through an updated literature search, focusing on studies that report data on UNB utility. Based on data for 10,934 breast cancer patients, sourced from 35 studies, a positive UNB allowed triage of 1,745 cases(simple proportion 16%) to axillary surgical treatment: the utility of UNB was a median 19.8% [interquartile range(IQR) 11.6%-26.7%] across these studies. We also modelled data from a subgroup of studies, and estimated that amongst patients with metastases to axillary nodes, the odds ratio(OR) for high nodal disease burden for a positive UNB versus a negative UNB was 4.38 [95% confidence interval(95% CI): 3.13, 6.13], P<0.001. From this model, the estimated proportion with high nodal disease burden was 58.9%(95% CI: 50.2%, 67.0%) for a positive UNB, whereas the estimated proportion with high nodal disease burden was 24.6%(95% CI: 17.7%, 33.2%) if UNB was negative. Overall, axillary UNB has good clinical utility and a positive UNB can effectively triage to ALND. However, the evolving landscape of axillary surgical treatment means that UNB will have relatively less utility where surgeons have modified their practice to omission of ALND for minimal nodal metastatic disease.

Sex differences in cognition and their relationship to male mate choice

Male cognition has gained recognition as an important potential player in sexual selection. A number of studies have found positive correlations between male sexual signals and cognitive performance an d/or female pref ere nces for males with better cog nitive performance, although other studies have not fou nd these relati on ships. Sex roles can differ dramatically, and sex differen ces in selection on cog nition likely follow from the different tasks associated with these sex roles. Here, using threespine stickleback Gasterosteus aculeatus, a species with clearly diverge nt sex roles and mutual mate choice, we focus on the cognitive trait inhibitory control because males must differentially respond to reproductive females versus other sticklebacks while defending territories and refrain from eating eggs and fry while performing paternal care. We presented fish with a detour task four times over a period of 7 days, allowing us to assess initial inhibitory control and improvement over time. We ask 1) whether there are sex differences in inhibitory control and 2) whether male mate choice is associated with female inhibitory control. Although males outperformed females on three different measures of detour task performance across four trials, these differences were largely explained by males being less neophobic than females. Females took more trials to successfully solve the detour task, even after accounting for sex differences in neophobia. Female cognitive abilities, however, were unrelated to the vigor with which males courted them. The equivocal results regarding sex differences in cognitive ability suggest further study given the very different selection pressures each sex experiences.

Multiplication factor for open ground storey buildings–a reliability based evaluation

Open Ground Storey（OGS） framed buildings where the ground storey is kept open without infill walls, mainly to facilitate parking, is increasing commonly in urban areas. However, vulnerability of this type of buildings has been exposed in past earthquakes. OGS buildings are conventionally designed by a bare frame analysis that ignores the stiffness of the infill walls present in the upper storeys, but doing so underestimates the inter-storey drift（ISD） and thereby the force demand in the ground storey columns. Therefore, a multiplication factor（MF） is introduced in various international codes to estimate the design forces（bending moments and shear forces） in the ground storey columns. This study focuses on the seismic performance of typical OGS buildings designed by means of MFs. The probabilistic seismic demand models, fragility curves, reliability and cost indices for various frame models including bare frames and fully infilled frames are developed. It is found that the MF scheme suggested by the Israel code is better than other international codes in terms of reliability and cost.
