Human papilloma virus and esophageal carcinoma in a Latin-American region

AIM:To investigate the presence of high-risk human papilloma virus (HPV) in esophageal squamous cell carcinomas (ESCCs) in a non-selected Mexican ***: Cases with a pathological diagnosis of squamous cell carcinoma of the esophagus were obtained from Department of Pathology files, at the National Cancer Institute in Mexico City during the period between 2000 and 2008. Slides from each case were reviewed and cases with sufficient neoplastic tissue were selected for molecular analysis. DNA was extracted from paraffin-embedded tissue samples for polymerase chain reaction analysis to detect HPV DNA sequences. Demographic and clinical data of each patient were retrieved from corresponding clinical ***: HPV was detected in 15 (25%) of ESCCs. HPV-16 was the most frequently observed genotype, followed by HPV-18; HPV-59 was also detected in one case. Unfortunately, HPV genotype could not be established in three cases due to lack of material for direct sequencing, although universal primers detected the presence of HPV generic sequences. No low-risk HPV genotypes were found nor was HPV-16/18 co-infection. HPV presence in ESCC was not significantly associated with gender, age, alcohol consumption, smoking, anatomic location, or histologic grade. All patients belonged to low and very low socioeconomic strata, and were diagnosed at advanced disease stage. Male patients were most commonly affected and the male:female ratio in HPV-positive ESCC increased two- fold in comparison with HPV-negative cases (6.5:1 vs 3.1:1).CONCLUSION: High prevalence of high-risk HPV in ESCC in Mexico does not support the hypothesis that HPV-associated ESCC is more common in areas with higher ESCC incidence rates.

AIM： To investigate features of Epstein-Barr virus （EBV）associated gastric carcinoma （EBVaGC） among a Mexican population. METHODS： Cases of primary gastric adenocarcinoma were retrieved from the files of the Departments of Pathology at the Instituto Nacional de Cancerologia and the Instituto Nacional de la Nutrición in Mexico City. The anatomic site of the gastric neoplasia was identified, and carcinomas were histologically classified as intestinal and diffuse types and subclassified as proposed by the Japanese Research Society for Gastric Cancer. EBV-encoded small non-polyadenylated RNA-1 （EBER-1） in situ hybridization was conducted to determine the presence of EBV in neoplastic cells. RESULTS： We studied 330 consecutive, non-selected, primary gastric carcinomas. Among these, there were 173 male and 157 female patients （male/female ratio 1.1/1）. EBER-1 was detected in 24 （7.3%） cases （male/ female ratio： 1.2/1）. The mean age for the entire group was 58.1 years （range： 20-88 years）, whereas the mean age for patients harboring EBER-1-positive gastric carcinomas was 65.3 years （range： 50-84 years）. Age and histological type showed statistically significant differences, when EBER-1-positive and -negative gastric carcinomas were compared. EBER-1 was detected in hyperplastic- and dysplastic-gastric mucosa surrounding two EBER-1-negative carcinomas, respectively. CONCLUSION： Among Latin-American countries, Mexico has the lowest frequency of EBVaGC. Indeed, the Mexican population 〉50 years of age was selectively affected. Ethnic variations are responsible for the epidemiologic behavior of EBVaGC among the worldwide population.

Methylation of DAPK and THBS1 genes in esophageal gastric-type columnar metaplasia

AIM: To explore methylation of DAPK, THBS1, CDH-1, and p14 genes, and Helicobacter pylori(H. pylori) status in individuals harboring esophageal columnar ***: Distal esophageal mucosal samples obtained by endoscopy and histologically diagnosed as gastric-type(non-specialized) columnar metaplasia, were studied thoroughly. DNA was extracted from paraffin blocks, and methylation status of deathassociated protein kinase(DAPK), thrombospondin-1(THBS1), cadherin-1(CDH1), and p14 genes, was examined using a methyl-sensitive polymerase chain reaction(MS-PCR) and sodium bisulfite modification protocol. H. pylori cag A status was determined by ***: In total, 68 subjects(33 females and 35 males), with a mean age of 52 years, were included. H. pylori cag A positive was present in the esophageal gastric-type metaplastic mucosa of 18 individuals. DAPK, THSB1, CDH1, and p14 gene promoters were methylated by MS-PCR in 40(58.8%), 33(48.5%), 46(67.6%), and 23(33.8%) cases of the 68 esophageal samples. H. pyloristatus was associated with methylation of DAPK(P = 0.003) and THBS1(P = 0.019).CONCLUSION: DNA methylation occurs in cases of gastric-type(non-specialized) columnar metaplasia of the esophagus, and this modification is associated with H. pylori cag A positive infection.

AIM： To determine the HLA-DQ locus in Mexican patients with Chronic gastritis and gastric adenocarcinoma.METHODS： Oligotyping for HLA-DQ locus was performed in 45 Mexican patients with chronic gastritis and 13 Mexican patients with diffuse-type gastric adenocarcinoma, and was then compared with 99 clinically healthy unrelated individuals. H pylori infection and CagA status were assessed in patients by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay （EUSA） method. RESULTS： We found a significant increased frequency of HLA-DQBI＊0401 allele in Hpylori-positive patients with chronic gastritis when compared with healthy subjects [19 vs 0%, P = 1 × 10^-7, odds ratio （OR） = 4.96; 95% confidence interval （95% CI）, 3.87-6.35]. We also found a significant increased frequency of HLA-DQBI＊0501 in patients with diffuse-type gastric carcinoma in comparison with healthy individuals （P = 1 × 10^4, OR = 13.07; 95% CI, 2.82-85.14）.CONCLUSION： HLA-DQ locus may play a different role in the development of H pylori-related chronic gastritis and difffuse-type gastric adenocarcinoma in the Mexican Mestizo population.

A novel high-order target phase approach(TPhA)for the station-keeping of periodic orbits is proposed in this *** key elements of the TPhA method,the phase-angle Poincare map and high-order maneuver map,are constructed using differential algebra(DA)techniques to determine station-keeping epochs and calculate correction maneuvers.A stochastic optimization framework tailored for the TPhA-based station-keeping process is leveraged to search for fuel-optimal and error-robust TPhA ***-satellite orbits(QSOs)around Phobos are investigated to demonstrate the efficacy of TPhA in mutli-fidelity dynamical *** Carlo simulations demonstrated that the baseline QSO of JAXA’s Martian Moons eXploration(MMX)mission could be maintained with a monthly maneuver budget of approximately 1 m/s.

Estimating the frequency of traffic overloading on road bridges

Load limits,which appear to be routinely exceeded by trucks,occasionally result in road bridge ***,predicting failures is crucial for safeguarding road *** studies have largely focused on forecasting bridge failure event probability using the reliability analysis method,whilst occasionally accounting for vehicular overloading *** recently,a study has investigated design traffic overloading event frequency using generalised linear regression models(GLRMs),including a power component and negative binomial regressions(NBRs).However,as far as the authors know,artificial neural network models(ANNMs)have never been applied to this *** paper is an attempt to fill in these *** a frequencybased metric of traffic overloading was adopted as a driver of failure ***,two alternative‘frequency'models were specified,calibrated,and *** former was based on a GLRM,the latter on ***,these models were compared using regression plots(RPs),measures of errors(Mo Es)and the ratio between the number of observed vs predicted design load overcoming events to evaluate their *** models analysed more than 2 million weigh-in-motion(WIM)data records from a pilot station on a bridge on a heavily used ring road in Brescia(Italy).Results showed that ANNMs outperformed *** have a higher correlation coefficient(between predicted and target frequencies),lower Mo Es,and a closer-to-unity ratio(between predicted and target frequencies).These findings may increase prediction accuracy of design traffic overloading events and give road authorities more effective traffic management to protect bridges from load hazards.

An algorithm for robust initial orbit determination (IOD) under perturbed orbital dynamics is presented. By leveraging map inversion techniques defined in the algebra of Taylor polynomials, this tool returns a highly accurate solution to the IOD problem and estimates a range centered on the aforementioned solution in which the true orbit should lie. To meet the specified accuracy requirements, automatic domain splitting is used to wrap the IOD routines and ensure that the local truncation error, introduced by a polynomial representation of the state estimate, remains below a predefined threshold. The algorithm is presented for three types of ground-based sensors, namely range radars, Doppler-only radars, and optical telescopes, by considering their different constraints in terms of available measurements and sensor noise. Finally, the improvement in performance with respect to a Keplerian-based IOD solution is demonstrated using large-scale numerical simulations over a subset of tracked objects in low Earth orbit.

Assessment of compressive strength of jet grouting by machine learning

Jet grouting is one of the most popular soil improvement techniques,but its design usually involves great uncertainties that can lead to economic cost overruns in construction *** high dispersion in the properties of the improved material leads to designers assuming a conservative,arbitrary and unjustified strength,which is even sometimes subjected to the results of the test *** present paper presents an approach for prediction of the uniaxial compressive strength(UCS)of jet grouting columns based on the analysis of several machine learning algorithms on a database of 854 results mainly collected from different research *** selected machine learning model(extremely randomized trees)relates the soil type and various parameters of the technique to the value of the compressive *** the complex mechanism that surrounds the jet grouting process,evidenced by the high dispersion and low correlation of the variables studied,the trained model allows to optimally predict the values of compressive strength with a significant improvement with respect to the existing ***,this work proposes for the first time a reliable and easily applicable approach for estimation of the compressive strength of jet grouting columns.

Climate change is predicted to significantly impact solar energy generation,which is particularly concerning given that photovoltaic(PV)energy is critical to the global transition to clean energy in underdeveloped *** study analyses the PV potential variations in Colombia using a Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6(CMIP6)multi-model ensemble approach under two shared socio-economic pathway scenarios for the near(2025-50)and far(2051-2100)*** the near-future period,the Pacific,Andean and Orinoquía regions are expected to experience a decrease in PV potential ranging from 10%to 23%for all shared socio-economic *** will be particularly noticeable during the March/April/May and June/July/August *** the other hand,CMIP6 estimations indicate a 1-4%increase in PV potential across the Amazon region during the June/July/August and September/October/November *** the far future,it has been projected that the Pacific,Andean and Orinoquía regions may experience a significant decline in solar power generation due to increased cloud cover and reduced *** decrease in PV potential during the June/July/August season could range from 8%to 27%for all considered scenarios,with the Pacific region being the most *** Pacific region is projected to experience a decrease ranging from 10%to 35%for all *** is worth noting that there are noticeable differences in PV potential across various regions,which can result in changes in cloud cover and atmospheric ***,the study provides valuable insights into the PV potential in Colombia and highlights the importance of considering regional variations and climate change scenarios in future energy planning.

A high aspect ratio surface micromachined accelerometer based on a SiC-CNT composite material

Silicon carbide(SiC)is recognized as an excellent material for microelectromechanical systems(MEMS),especially those operating in challenging environments,such as high temperature,high radiation,and corrosive ***,SiC bulk micromachining is still a challenge,which hinders the development of complex SiC *** address this problem,we present the use of a carbon nanotube(CNT)array coated with amorphous SiC(a-SiC)as an alternative composite material to enable high aspect ratio(HAR)surface *** using a prepatterned catalyst layer,a HAR CNT array can be grown as a structural template and then densified by uniformly filling the CNT bundle with LPCVD *** electrical properties of the resulting SiC-CNT composite were characterized,and the results indicated that the electrical resistivity was dominated by the *** demonstrate the use of this composite in MEMS applications,a capacitive accelerometer was designed,fabricated,and *** fabrication results showed that the composite is fully compatible with the manufacturing of surface micromachining *** Young’s modulus of the composite was extracted from the measured spring constant,and the results show a great improvement in the mechanical properties of the CNTs after coating with *** accelerometer was electrically characterized,and its functionality was confirmed using a mechanical shaker.
