The presence of heavy metals such as arsenic(As)and chromium(Cr)can be considered one of the most toxic heavy *** study aims to develop and evaluate a graphene oxide(GO)based material functionalized with ferrihydrite for the removal of As(V)in the presence of Cr(VI).The adsorbent ferrihydrite-functionalized graphene oxide(GOFH)was characterized by SEM,FTIR,XRD,XPS,surface charge,BET and *** adsorption capacities for As(V)and Cr(VI)were 160 and 66 mg g^(-1)respectively at pH 4 and 298 K,fitting the Langmuir *** binary systems,GOFH adsorbed As(V)with an adsorption capacity of 137 mg g^(-1)in the presence of 20 mg L^(-1)Cr(VI)at room *** analysis revealed an exothermic and spontaneous ***,GOFH effectively removed several coexisting anions from groundwater,including SO_(4)^(2-),CO_(3)^(2-)and Cl^(-).This work evidences the potential of GOFH for competitive adsorption of priority pollutants from complex *** GOFH material represents a technically and economically viable technology for application in groundwater decontamination,as it requires inexpensive precursors and ambient conditions during synthesis and operation.

A new analysis of a previously studied traveling agent model, showed that there is a relation between the degree of homogeneity of the medium where the agents move, agent motion patterns, and the noise generated from their displacements. We proved that for a particular value of homogeneity, the system self organizes in a state where the agents carry out Lévy walks and the displacement signal corresponds to 1/f noise. Using probabilistic arguments, we conjectured that 1/f noise is a fingerprint of a statistical phase transition, from randomness (disorder) to predictability (order), and that it emerges from the contextuality nature of the system which generates it.

A Survey on the Methods of Primer Design Among Plant Pathologists in Australia and New Zealand

Designing primers for PCR-based diagnostics was achieved by executing sight searches on DNA sequences. Visual searching for specific DNA targets is time consuming, subjective and requires optimisation among numerous candidate primer sets. Several primer design software have been linked to useful bioinformatic packages to speed the development of PCR assays. Despite the software options available, primer design has remained a challenging aspect of incursion responses, biosecurity emergencies and microbial forensic applications. Two surveys were conducted among 45 plant virologists and 21 other plant pathologists during the 7th Australasian Plant Virology Workshop and the 16th Biennial Australasian Plant Pathology Conference in 2006 and 2007, respectively. Results show that most primer design learning occurs scientist to scientist rather than during academic teaching. This tendency matches with 16% of scientists users of PCR, who do not engage in primer design and 25% designing primers only by visual means, combining a pool of 41% who if trained, would likely enhance their performance in primer design. Only 13 out of 58 scientists ranked themselves as experts. Implementing primer design in study programs and regional training will benefit plant pathology and entomology, and the responsiveness and performance of biosecurity and microbial forensics in the South Pacific.

Resolution of 2nd, 3rd or 4th interdigital space incomplete, simple syndactyly using a random vascularity flap

Syndactyly consists of a variable fusion of soft tissue or of bone in adjacent fingers. This has important aesthetic and functional impacts on the development of the child due to the abnormal appearance of the hand. When the 1st web space is affected, it compromises grasp and development of the clamp function. Affliction of the 2nd, 3rd or 4th webspaces hinder the independent movement of the fingers adjacent to it. Current syndactyly release techniques have inherent disadvantages such as the use of skin from both the interdigital halves of the syndactylized fingers, the need to skin graft the donor site, postoperative flexion contracture, and need of 2 or more surgical procedures to obtain the desired result. The authors present 7 cases with incomplete simple 2nd, 3rd or 4th webspace syndactylies of multiple etiologies. All cases were treated at the unit of the corresponding author. The flap used in the treatment for all 7 cases did not require skin grafting of the flap donor site and used only skin from one of the fingers, while achieving a webspace dimension similar to normality, with a short recovery period. Furthermore, there were no postoperative finger contractures, diminishing the risk of future relapse.

Inflammatory bowel diseases(IBDs)are closely linked to *** latest research indicates that diet and nutrition are significantly involved in the etiopathogenesis of the disease,although their specific role throughout its clinical course still remains *** study reviewed how diet and nutrition are associated with IBD development and *** though specific diets have been shown to bring about positive outcomes,there is currently no scientific consensus regarding an appropriate diet that would benefit all IBD *** suggest that individualized dietary recommendations are of the greatest importance and that diets should be planned to provide individual IBD patients with specific nutrient requirements while keeping all the clinical aspects of the patients in *** research is clearly necessary to investigate nutritional factors involved in IBD development and,especially,to evaluate the applications of the diets during the course of the disease.

The Historical Development of the Port of Livorno （Italy） and Its New Port Plan 2010 in Advanced Stage of Elaboration

The geographical location makes the port of Livorno one of the most important in Italy. The port, in fact, benefits of an extended network of roads and rails connecting it with the rest of Italy, and central and southern Europe as well. The history of Livorno and its port is inextricably linked to that of Pisa and Florence, and to the complexity of events that determined the political set-up of the region along several centuries. Looking at the new port plan of Livorno has made it necessary an extensive overview of the history of both the port, and of its planning. This analysis has allowed： to understand the reason for the different choices made in the past for the development of the port, highlighting, when necessary, the errors made; to identify the strengths and weaknesses of the existing port infrastructure; to identify the works needed to boost the port in the European context. The purpose of this paper is to provide a summary of the analysis performed for the implementation of the new Livorno port plan 2010 and show how the port planning in Italy is often conditioned by hundreds of centuries of history.

A Look to Nursing Care Perceived by Adolescents in a Hemodialysis Unit

Background: Adolescent’s perception of nurse care imparted in the hemodialysis unit and the needs that they do not always express are an important starting point to optimize attention and care given by nurse professional;the goal is to reach the holistic focus characteristic of the discipline, and then generate scientific evidence that will help other health professionals, regarding given attention to patients in this step of their lives suffering chronic renal damage subjected to hemodialysis. Objective: To analyze the perception of adolescents with chronic kidney disease about nurse care in a hemodialysis unit. Methods: Qualitative and phenomenological study under the philosophic scope of Merleau Ponty, with a descriptive design;the information collection was through semi-structured interviews, field notes, and participants’ observation from three adolescents’ informers subjected to renal substitution by hemodialysis three times per week, in a high specialty medical unit in Mexico City. Selection of informers was by convenience and their previous authorization was requested by signed informed consent. The analysis of qualitative data was according to Rodríguez et al. Results: Four categories with seven subcategories emerged: Category 1, Adolescent’s perception regarding nursing care on hemodialysis;Category 2, Care during hemodialysis process;Category 3, The world of hemodialysis;Category 4, Corporeity from adolescent’s look. Conclusion: Nursing care to adolescents during hemodialysis must be accompanied by comprehension, communication, and knowledge of patients, regarding their needs perceived to know the way they live their chronic kidney illness, through their body, their world and the way they see themselves. The main characteristics of nurse care are communication and constant interaction with nurse-adolescent, this openness to an unknown world for them is seen as a pleasant interaction, perceived as necessary and it helps them to feel good in their hemodialy

A Reward Functional to Solve the Replacement Problem

The replacement problem can be modeled as a finite, irreducible, homogeneous Markov Chain. In our proposal the problem was modeled using a Markov decision process and then, the instance was optimized using dynamic programming. We proposed a new functional that includes a reward functional, that can be more helpful in processing industries because it considerate instances like incomes, maintenance costs, fixed costs to replace equipment, purchase price and salvage values;and this functional can be solved with dynamic programming and used to make effective decisions. Two theorems are proved related with this new functional. A numerical example is presented in order to demonstrate the utility of this proposal.
