Periodic observations of vegetation index,such as the normalized difference vegetation index(NDVI),can be used for data assimilation in heterogenous ***,the new Sentinel 2 Multispectral instrument and Landsat 8 Operational Land Imager sensor data are available at such high temporal and spatial resolutions that can be used to detect the patches of the main vegetation components(grass and trees)of heterogenous ecosystems,and capture their *** demonstrate the possibility to merge grass and tree NDVI observations and models,to optimally provide robust predictions of grass and tree leaf area *** proposed assimilation approach assimilates NDVI data through the Ensemble Kalman filter(EnKF)and dynamically calibrates a key vegetation dynamic model parameter,the maintenance respiration coeffcient(ma).In the presence of large bias of the grass and tree ma base values,only the use of the proposed assimilation approach removes the large bias in the biomass balance,dynamically calibrating maintenance respiration coefficients,and corrects the *** performance of a land surface-vegetation model was improved by assimilating observations of *** effective impact of the proposed assimilation approach on the evapotranspiration and CO_(2) uptake predictions in the heterogenous ecosystem is also demonstrated.

There are several conditions that can lead to portal vein thrombosis(PVT), including including infection, malignancies, and coagulation disorders. Anew condition of interest is protein C and S deficiencies, associated with hypercoagulation and recurrent venous thromboembolism. We report the case of a non-cirrhotic 63-year-old male diagnosed with acute superior mesenteric vein thrombosis and PVT and combined deficiencies in proteins C and S, recanalized by short-term low molecular heparin plus oral warfarin therapy.

Low pressure plasma polymer films were synthesized using pyrrole and allylamine monomers and adding iodine was used(or not)for the reaction in both *** were polymerized on glass substrates under the same reaction *** of allylamine was also studied at different operating *** thin polymer films were used as culture surfaces for HepG2 cells,a cell line derived from a human *** proliferation,differentiation and two-dimensional propagation until obtaining monolayer of the cells was studied on the different synthetized films and correlations were established between the conditions of synthesis,the physicochemical characteristics obtained and the performance as substrates for the cellular growth.

Herpes zoster(HZ) infection occurs in approximately 10% to 30% of individuals. Visceral neuropathies secondary to HZ can cause cystitis and urinary retention. But colonic pseudo-obstruction can also occur. Peripheral neuropathy may reveal segmental motor paresis of either upper or lower limbs, the abdominal muscles or the diaphragm. We report the case of a 62-year-old male patient who presented with abdominal distention and cutaneous vesicular eruption on the left side of the abdominal wall. Plain X-rays and computed tomography scan showed distended small bowel. A diagnosis of intestinal pseudo-obstruction was made secondary to segmental paresis of the small intestine and visceral neuropathy. Conservative management was successful and the patient was discharged uneventfully. Intestinal pseudo-obstruction ought to be consideredwhen dealing with non-obstructive(adynamic) conditions of the digestive tract associated with HZ infection; since early recognition may help to avoid unnecessary surgery.

Background: Remote sensing-based inventories are essential in estimating forest cover in tropical and subtropical countries, where ground inventories cannot be performed periodically at a large scale owing to high costs and forest inaccessibility(e.g. REDD projects) and are mandatory for constructing historical records that can be used as forest cover baselines. Given the conditions of such inventories, the survey area is partitioned into a grid of imagery segments of pre-fixed size where the proportion of forest cover can be measured within segments using a combination of unsupervised(automated or semi-automated) classification of satellite imagery and manual(i.e. visual on-screen)enhancements. Because visual on-screen operations are time expensive procedures, manual classification can be performed only for a sample of imagery segments selected at a first stage, while forest cover within each selected segment is estimated at a second stage from a sample of pixels selected within the segment. Because forest cover data arising from unsupervised satellite imagery classification may be freely available(e.g. Landsat imagery)over the entire survey area(wall-to-wall data) and are likely to be good proxies of manually classified cover data(sample data), they can be adopted as suitable auxiliary ***: The question is how to choose the sample areas where manual classification is carried out. We have investigated the efficiency of one-per-stratum stratified sampling for selecting segments and pixels, where to carry out manual classification and to determine the efficiency of the difference estimator for exploiting auxiliary information at the estimation level. Douglas-fir(Pseudotsuga menziesii(Mirb.)Franco)is an important exotic tree species that was planted across a large part of Europe during the last *** both experimental trials and conventional forest plantations,the trees grow at a high rate and produce high-quality *** present study investigated climate-growth relationships of Douglas-fi r at two Italian sites that contrast in climate:a Mediterranean area in southern Italy(Mercurella site)and a cooler,moister site in the northern Apennines without summer aridity(Acquerino).The relationship between tree-ring chronologies and monthly climatic variables was evaluated by a moving average and correlation *** showed that the minimum temperature in February and in March play a key role for Douglas-fi r at both sites,with a positive eff ect on *** the northern site,it is also highly sensitive to late summer temperatures(negative correlation)and spring–summer precipitation(positive correlation).Growth rates in southern latitudes were high even in Europe and in the Mediterranean environment,with low sensitivity to climatic fl *** the basis of our results,further common garden experiments should test adaptation and the interaction between genetics and environment of second-or third-generation seeds from old stands across Europe such as done by the old International Union of Forest Research Organizations(IUFRO)or the European Douglasfi r Improvement Research Cooperative(EUDIREC)experimentation programmes.

This article presents the construction of scaffolds composed of polylactic acid(PLA)with different concentrations of hydroxyapatite(HA)by electrospinning,which were superficially modified with polypyrrole(PPy/I)by plasma polymerization.A preliminary study was conducted of the biological and mechanical behavior of the scaffolds when they were implanted in the back of rabbits for 30 days;bone cells differentiated from mesenchymal stem cells(MSCs)were *** bone cell and scaffold structures were characterized by histological,immunohistochemical,and mechanical stress ***–eosin staining showed good tissue *** immunohistochemical tests highlighted the presence of the main bone tissue proteins,such as collagen,osteocalcin,and *** PLA/HA scaffolds were observed to exhibit cell adhesion and proliferation properties;however,the response was much better in the scaffolds that had a higher concentration of HA and that were coated with PPy/*** results of the mechanical tests of the scaffolds indicated that the plasma treatment improved the adhesion and cell proliferation properties and contributed to the mechanical support,allowing the formation of neotissues with good viability of cell growth.

How to recognize late-onset hypogonadism in men wit sexual dysfunction

Late-onset hypogonadism （LOH） has been considered the most common form of male hypogonadism with a prevalence of approximately 1 in 100 men. Diagnosis of LOH should be made in symptomatic men with unequivocally low serum testosterone （T） levels. However, its clinical presentation is often insidious and difficult to recognize because it is characterized by nonspecific symptoms that make differential diagnosis with physiological ageing problematic. Sexual dysfunction is the most important determinant for medical consultation and the most specific symptom associated with low T. We therefore analysed a consecutive series of 1734 subjects who attended our unit for sexual dysfunction to investigate the associations between low T （different thresholds）, sexual parameters, medical history data （delayed puberty, pituitary disease or cryptorchidism） and their physical exam results. Metabolic parameters, in particular waist circumference, display the greatest accuracy in detecting low T. We found that only the association of several symptoms and signs could significantly raise the clinical suspicion of low T. Structured inventories, which cluster together symptoms and signs of hypogonadism, can help clinicians suspect androgen deficiency. In particular, structured interviews, such as ANDROTEST, have been demonstrated to have a greater accuracy when compared to self reported questionnaires in detecting low T levels.

Erectile dysfunction （ED） is a frequent complication of obesity. The aim of this review is to critically analyze the framework of obesity and ED, dissecting the connections between the two pathological entities. Current clinical evidence shows that obesity, and in particular central obesity, is associated with both arteriogenic ED and reduced testosterone （T） levels. It is conceivable that obesity-associated hypogonadism and increased cardiovascular risk might partially justify the higher prevalence of ED in overweight and obese individuals. Conversely, the psychological disturbances related to obesity do not seem to play a major role in the pathogenesis of obesity-related ED. However, both clinical and preclinical data show that the association between ED and visceral fat accumulation is independent from known obesity-associated comorbidities. Therefore, how visceral fat could impair penile microcirculation still remains unknown. This point is particularly relevant since central obesity in ED subjects categorizes individuals at high cardiovascular risk, especially in the youngest ones. The presence of ED in obese subjects might help healthcare professionals in convincing them to initiate a virtuous cycle, where the correction of sexual dysfunction will be the reward for improved lifestyle behavior. Unsatisfying sexual activity represents a meaningful, straightforward motivation for consulting healthcare professionals, who, in turn, should take advantage of the opportunity to encourage obese patients to treat, besides ED, the underlying unfavorable conditions, thus not only restoring erectile function, but also overall health.
