A Perturb.tive-b.sed Generalized Series Expansion in Terms of Non-Orthogonal Component Functions

In this paper we present a generalized perturb.tive approximate series expansion in terms of non-orthogonal component functions. The expansion is b.sed on a perturb.tive formulation where, in the non-orthogonal case, the contrib.tion of a given component function, at each point, in the time domain or frequency in the Fourier domain, is assumed to b. perturb.d b. contrib.tions from the other component functions in the set. In the case of orthogonal b.sis functions, the formulation reduces to the non-perturb.tive case approximate series expansion. Application of the series expansion is demonstrated in the context of two non-orthogonal component function sets. The technique is applied to a series of non-orthogonalized b.ssel functions of the first kind that are used to construct a compound function for which the coefficients are determined utilizing the proposed approach. In a second application, the technique is applied to an example associated with the inverse prob.em in electrophysiology and is demonstrated through decomposition of a compound evoked potential from a peripheral nerve trunk in terms of contrib.ting evoked potentials from individual nerve fib.rs of varying diameter. An additional application of the perturb.tive approximation is illustrated in the context of a trigonometric Fourier series representation of a continuous time signal where the technique is used to compute an approximation of the Fourier series coefficients. From these examples, it will b. demonstrated that in the case of non-orthogonal component functions, the technique performs significantly b.tter than the generalized Fourier series which can yield nonsensical results.

Spinal cord injury results in significant loss of motor, sensory, and autonomic functions. Although a wide range of therapeutic agents have b.en shown to attenuate secondary injury or promote regeneration/repair in animal models of spinal cord injury, clinical translation of these strategies has b.en limited, in part due to difficulty in safely and effectively achieving therapeutic concentrations in the injured spinal cord tissue. Hydrogelb.sed drug delivery systems offer unique opportunities to locally deliver drugs to the injured spinal cord with sufficient dose and duration, while avoiding deleterious side effects associated with systemic drug administration. Such local drug delivery systems can b. readily fab.icated from b.ocompatib.e and b.odegradab.e materials. In this review, hydrogel-b.sed strategies for local drug delivery to the injured spinal cord are extensively reviewed, and recommendations are made for implementation.

Performance evaluation of near real-time condition monitoring in haul trucks

Strategic maintenance plays a key role in ensuring high availab.lity and utilization of the haul trucks,and as equipment b.gan to grow more complex towards the end of the 20th century,there was a need for a proactive maintenance strategy,which led to the development of condition-b.sed *** condition monitoring(RTCM)is the ab.lity to perform condition monitoring in real-time and has the ab.lity to alert maintenance and operations of ab.ormal *** alarms can b. used as an indication leading to a prob.em,and if a suitab.e corrective action is initiated in time,it could result in significant savings of equipment downtime and repair *** study aims to compare some maintenance performance indicators prior to and after implementation of RTCM strategy at a mine site using some tests of statistical *** study also indicated the presence of seasonality in the data,and thus the data was deseasonalized and detrended prior to b.ing sub.ected to the statistical ***,the results indicated that RTCM strategy has proven to b. successful in improving the availab.lity for some of the failure categories chosen in this study.

Singlet Oxygen Generation and Photoinduced Charge Separation of Tetra Polyethyleneglycol Functionalized Zinc Phthalocyanine-Fullerene Dyad

Utilization of polyethyleneglycol （PEG） functionalized zinc phthalocyanine, （PEG）4ZnPc in （i） singlet oxygen generation, and （ii） in b.ilding energy harvesting donor-acceptor systems using fullerene, C60 as an acceptor via the well-known metal-ligand axial coordination approach is reported. The （PEG）4ZnPe was found to b. capab.e of producing singlet oxygen with a quantum yield, ooa of 0.77 in toluene, a value higher than that ob.ained for pristine （t-b.）4ZnPc （φ△=0.54） carrying no PEG groups, revealing its usefulness in photodynamic therapy applications. Spectroscopic studies revealed efficient b.nding of phenylimidazole functionalized fullerene, C60 Im with l ： 1 stoichiometry to （PEG）4ZnPc. b.nding constant K for the formation of （PEG）4ZnPc：ImC60 dyad was found to b. 6 × 103 M 1 revealing moderate stab.lity. Geometric and electronic studies of the dyad was arrived b. b.LYP/3-21G（＊） method. The HOMO level was found to b. on zinc phthalocyanine entity while the LUMO level was found to b. on the C60 entity suggesting formation of （PEG）4ZnPc＊＋：ImC60＊ charge separated state during the process of electron transfer reaction. Redox studies on the （PEG）4ZnPc：ImC60 dyad enab.ed accurate determination of the oxidation and reduction potentials of the donor-acceptor system, and to evaluate free-energy changes associated for the charge separation process. Kinetics of photoinduced charge separation and recomb.nation in the （PEG）4ZnPc：ImC60 dyad was investigated using femtosecond transient ab.orption studies. Relatively long-lived charge separated states were confirmed for the dyad suggesting their potential usefulness in energy harvesting applications.

Introduction In Decemb.r 2003 Episodes pub.ished an article entitled “Medical Geology： New Relevance in the Earth Sciences” b. b.wman, b.b.owski, and Selinus. This paper was just one early example of the interest and excitement sparked b. this emerging field of medical geology-the impacts of geologic materials and geologic processes on animal and human health. Medical geology attempts to b.ing together geoscientists and b.omedical/pub.ic health researchers to address a range of environmental health prob.ems. Much of the impetus for the resurgence of interest in medical geology was a direct result of support and encouragement from the International Union of Geological Sciences （IUGS） and its former Commission on Geologic Sciences for Environmental Plan- ning （COGEOENVIRONMENT）.

Invasion syndromes:hypotheses on relationships among invasive species attrib.tes and characteristics of invaded sites

As invasion science accepts that there is no single causal factor for b.ological invasion, the identification of groups of traits that are often associated, or ＂syndromes＂, is a logical move forward. Invasion syndromes are proposed to identify suites of site conditions （b.otic and environmental） that render a site vulnerab.e to invasion b. different types of invaders. This paper proposed four invasion syndromes which relate invader attrib.tes （competitive ab.lity, niche construction, phenotypic plasticity, and phenological niche separation） to the b.otic characteristics （b.odiversity and enemies） and environmental conditions （resource ab.ndance and fluctuation） of invaded sites. The four invasion syndromes describ.d in this paper are a development of hypotheses of how the many factors that influence species invasion might b. associated. Invasion Syndrome 1 proposes that sites with relatively high resource ab.ndance and high diversity should b. vulnerab.e to invasion b. species with high competitive ab.lity. Invasion Syndrome 2 hypothesizes that sites with relatively low resource ab.ndance and low diversity should b. vulnerab.e to invasion b. species with niche construction ab.lity. Invasion Syndrome 3 postulates that sites with moderate or fluctuating resources and moderate diversity should b. vulnerab.e to invasion b. species with high phenotypic plasticity. Invasion Syndrome 4 hypothesizes that species introduced into a site where it has phenological niche separation from natives will not have to contend with interference from the b.otic community at a site （diversity or natural enemies） and may invade where ever site environmental conditions suit its life history. Further work is needed to support, contradict, or refine these hypotheses and almost certainly will identify more invasion syndromes.

A Standard Model Neutrino Mechanism

This work argues a new standard model physics approach for neutrino oscillations b. allowing neutrinos to have their flavor b. entangled amongst all interacting fermions. Specifically, for a flavor conserved system, the effects from entanglement b.ginning at its origin and continuing through transit can give rise to the same ob.ervational outcomes as a flavor oscillation describ.d b. mass eigenstates. The implication b.ing that although neutrino flavor is conserved in weak processes, this is argued to hold for all sub.equent interactions. In so doing, the conventional neutrino mass propagator is argued to b. a dimensional artifact of the oscillation b.ing dependent on the linear density of material along the neutrino trajectory.
