Back-to-Front Ordering of Triangles in Digital Terrain Models over Regular Grids

Visiting triangles that conform a digital terrain model is a core operation in a number of fields like animationand video games or generating profiles, cross-sections, and contours in civil engineering. Perfornfing the visit in an efficientmanner is an issue specially when the output of the traversal depends in some way on additional parameters or informationchanging over time, for example, a moving point of view. In this work we report a set of rules that, given a digital terrainmodel defined over a regular grid and an arbitrary point of view outside the terrain, define a total back-to-front order in theset of digital terrain model triangles with respect to the point. The set of rules is minimal, complete and correct. To assesshow the rules perform, we have implemented a CPU-based algorithm for realistically rendering height fields defined overregular grids. The algorithm does not make use of the z-buffer or shaders featured by our graphics card. We show how ouralgorithm is implemented and show visual results obtained from synthetic and real data. We further discuss the algorithmperformance with respect to two algorithms： a naive algorithm that visits triangles according to grid indices and does notsolve the hidden line problem, and the z-buffer provided by the graphics card featured by our computer. Our algorithmallows real-time interaction when the point of view arbitrarily moves in 3D space and we show that its performance is asgood as that of the z-buffer graphics card.

Abnormal endogenous pain modulation and somatic and visceral hypersensitivity in female patients with irritable bowel syndrome

AIM： To investigate the role of endogenous pain modulatory mechanisms in the central sensitization implicated by the visceral hypersensitivity demonstrated in patients with irritable bowel syndrome （IBS）. Dysfunction of modulatory mechanisms would be expected to also result in changes of somatic sensory function. METHODS： Endogenous pain modulatory mechanisms were assessed using heterotopic stimulation and somatic and visceral sensory testing in IBS. Pain intensities （visual analogue scale, VAS 0-100） during suprathreshold rectal distension with a barostat, cold pressor stimulation of the foot and during both stimuli simultaneously （heterotopic stimulation） were recorded in 40 female patients with IBS and 20 female healthy controls. RESULTS： Rectal hypersensitivity （defined by 95% Cl of controls） was seen in 21 （53%）, somatic hypersensitivity in 22 （55%） and both rectal and somatic hypersensitivity in 14 of these IBS patients. Heterotopic stimulation decreased rectal pain intensity by 6 （-11 to -1） in controls, but increased rectal pain by 2 （-3 to ＋6） in all IBS patients （P 〈 0.05） and by 8 （-2 to ＋19） in IBS patients with somatic and visceral hypersensitivity （P 〈 0.02）. CONCLUSION： A majority of IBS patients had abnormal endogenous pain modulation and somatic hypersensitivity as evidence of central sensitization.

Effect of transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt on pulmonary gas exchange in patients with portal hypertension and hepatopulmonary syndrome

AIM: To assess the impact of transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) on pulmonary gas exchange and to evaluate the use of TIPS for the treatment of hepatopulmonary syndrome (HPS).METHODS: Seven patients, three of them with advanced HPS, in whom detailed pulmonary function tests were performed before and after TIPS placementat the University of Alabama Hospital and at the Hospital Clinic, Barcelona, were ***: TIPS patency was confirmed by hemodynamic evaluation. No changes in arterial blood gases were observed in the overall subset of patients. Transient arterial oxygenation improvement was observed in only one HPS patient, early after TIPS, but this was not sustained 4 mo ***: TIPS neither improved nor worsened pulmonary gas exchange in patients with portal hypertension. This data does not support the use of TIPS as a specific treatment for HPS. However, it does reinforce the view that TIPS can be safely performed for the treatment of other complications of portal hypertension in patients with HPS.

Sustained low diffusing capacity in hepatopulmonary syndrome after liver transplantation

AIM： To study the presence of sustained low diffusing capacity （DLco） after liver transplantation （LT） in patients with hepatopulmonary syndrome （HPS）. METHODS： Six patients with mild-to-severe HPS and 24 without HPS who underwent LT were prospectively followed before and after LT at mid-term （median, 15 mo）. HPS patients were also assessed at Iong-tem （median, 86 mo）. RESULTS： Before LT, HPS patients showed lower PaO2 （71 ± 8 mmHg）, higher AaPO2 （43 ± 10 mmHg） and lower DLco （54% ± 9% predicted）, due to a combination of moderate-to-severe ventilation-perfusion （VA/Q） imbalance, mild shunt and diffusion limitation, than non- HPS patients （94 ± 4 mmHg and 19 ± 3 mmHg, and 85% ± 3% predicted, respectively）（P 〈 0.05 each）. Seven non-HPS patients had also reduced DLco （70% ± 4% predicted）. At mid- and long-term after LT, compared to pre- LT, HPS patients normalized PaO2 （91 ± 3 mmHg and 87 ± 5 mmHg）, AaPO2 （14 ± 3 mmHg and 23 ± 5 mmHg） and all VA/Q descriptors （P 〈 0.05 each） without changes in DLco （53% ± 8% and 56% ± 7% predicted, respectively）. Post-LT DLco in non-HPS patients with pre- LT low DLco was unchanged （75% ± 6% predicted）. CONCLUSION： While complete VA/Q resolution in HPS indicates a reversible functional disturbance, sustained low DLco after LT also present in some non-HPS patients, points to persistence of sub-clinical liver-induced pulmonary vascular changes.

Differentiation of malignant and benign proximal bile duct strictures: The diagnostic dilemma

AIM: To identify the criteria for the differentiation of hilar cholangiocarcinoma (HCCA) from benign strictures. METHODS: A total of 68 patients underwent resection of lesions suspicious for HCCA between 1998 and 2006. The results of laboratory investigations, imaging studies and brush cytology were collected. These fi ndings were analyzed to obtain the fi nal diagnosis. RESULTS: Histological examination of the resected specimens confirmed HCCA in 58 patients (85%, group Ⅰ) whereas 10 patients (15%, groupⅡ) were diagnosed to have benign strictures. The most common presenting symptom was obstructive jaundice in 77% patients (79% group Ⅰvs 60% group Ⅱ P = 0.23). Laboratory findings showed greater elevation of transaminase levels in group Ⅰcompared to group Ⅱ The various imaging modalities showed vascular involvement exclusively in the malignant group (36%,P < 0.05). Brush cytology was positive for malignant cells in only 50% patients in group Ⅰ whereas none in group Ⅱ showed malignant cells. CONCLUSION: Despite improvements in imaging techniques, 10 patients (15%) with a presumptive diagnosis of HCCA were ultimately found to have benign strictures. Except for vascular involvement which was associated significantly with malignancy, there were no conclusive features of malignancy on regular imaging modalities. This uncertainty should be taken into account when patients with a suspicious lesion at the liver hilum are considered for resection.

RECYTRACK Project： Elastomeric Eco-friendly Material Based on End-of-Life Tires Blended with Organic Bind Resin for Railway Applications

RECYTRACK is a 3.5 year project granted by the European Commission through LIFE＋ 2010 program. The overall objective of the project is to demonstrate the environmental benefits and technical feasibility of the implementation of an elastomeric eco-friendly material made of end-of-life tires with resin for railway applications. Within the project, AV Ingenieros jointly with LEAM, carries out the study of the vibration behavior of the eco-friendly material, which will be applied as a mat for ballasted tracks as well as an isolated block system for slab tracks. Firstly, an analytical model capable to predict the efficiency of the eco-friendly material as a vibration mitigation measure has been developed. Subsequently, and after the implementation of the eco-friendly solutions in real railway infrastructures, its vibration behavior will be measured and validated through in situ measurements during regular service. In this paper the analytical model is defined, the elastomeric material dynamic experimental characterization is described and the under ballast mat Insertion Loss is calculated for two different soil stiffness.

Effect of Menopause on Gene Expression Profiles of Circu-lating Monocytes: A Pilot in vivo Microarray Study

Menopause is one of the key physiological events in the female life and can increase the risk for a number of complex autoimmune, neurodegenerative, metabolic, and cardiovascular disorders. Circulating monocytes can differentiate into various cell types and play an important role in tissue morphogenesis and immune response. We studied gene expression profiles of peripheral blood monocytes in healthy pre- and postmenopausal women using Affymetrix Human U133A GeneChip array that contains probes for -14,500 genes. Comparative analyses between the samples showed that 20 genes were up- and 20 were down-regulated. Of these genes, 28 were classified into six major GO categories relevant to such biological processes as the cell proliferation, immune response, cellular metabolism, and the others. The remaining 12 genes have yet unidentified biological functions. Our results support the hypothesis that functional state of circulating monocytes is indeed affected by menopause, and resulting changes may be determined through the genomewide gene expression profiling. Several differentially expressed genes identified in this study may be candidates for further studies of menopause-associated systemic autoimmune, neurodegenerative, and cardiovascular disorders. Our study is only the first attempt in this direction, but it lays a basis for further research.

Agroforestry systems have the potential to provide year-long income opportunities via the integrated forage or crop, timber, and livestock. Legumes are an attractive alternative option during the growing season when more traditional forages may not be as productive. The objective of this study was to test the establishment of arrowleaf and white clover grown under varying pine tree alley widths. In 2011, existing forage was removed in 15-yr old loblolly pine tree row alleys of different widths (3.7, 4.9, 7.3, and 9.8 m), including an open area. Arrowleaf, as an annual, was replanted in 2012. Seedlings were counted twice/year, while dry matter was measured three times/year. Photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) was measured in all alley widths to compare light penetration through the canopy. Hot and dry conditions occurred throughout 2012, affecting results. In 2012 and 2013, the greatest PAR for most treatments was observed in June. Seedling counts for all treatments were greatest immediately after establishment, and gradually declined throughout the course of the study. Dry matter yields increased throughout the growing season, and were greatest in arrowleaf clover in the open area on all measurement dates;however, increased weed pressure and repeated flooding affected yields. This study demonstrated that clover establishment in shady wooded areas is possible, but only under suitable environmental conditions.
