Effect of Antibiotic Consumption on Resistance of <i>Pseudomonas aeruginosa</i>Isolated from Lebanese Patients with Emphasis on MBL Production

The relationship between antibiotic consumption and resistance has been widely evaluated. Pseudomonas aeruginosa is one of the most important opportunistic pathogens in the nosocomial setting, and its resistance to antibiotics is increaseing. Production of metallo-β-lactamases (MBLs) is currently the most fearful resistance mechanism due to the potential of dissemination. This study aimed to evaluate the correlation between antibiotic consumption (expressed in DDD/100 bed days) and resistance (expressed in % of isolates and patients) in different time periods for P. aeruginosa between 2006 and 2009 at Saint George Hospital University Medical Center (SGH-UMC), Beirut. Pearson correlation coefficients (r) were calculated and linear regression was performed. Detection of MBL-producing Imipenem resistant P. aeruginosa (IRPA) isolates between 2008 and 2009 was performed using three MBL screening methods: MBL Etest?, Imipenem/EDTA combined disk test and EDTA disk potentiation with four cephalosporins. The modified Hodge test was also performed. From 2006 till 2009, there was a trend of increasing resistance of P. aeruginosa to all antibiotics, and the highest % of resistance was for Ofloxacin. Concerning resistance expressed by isolates, high correlation coefficients resulted among Imipenem, Ciprofloxacin and Tazobactam consumption and resistance to these agents in the same year correlation;Ceftazidime and Ofloxacin consumption and resistance in the next year correlation;Gentamicin and Ofloxacin consumption and the change in resistance (ΔR). Concerning resistance expressed by patients, results were similar except for Ceftazidime and Ofloxacin correlation in the next year correlation. In MBL screening, three isolates gave accordance among 4 methods which showed a positive result. Estimation of petrophysical parameters using seismic inversion and neural network modeling in Upper Assam basin, India

Estimation of petrophysical parameters is an important issue of any reservoirs. Porosity, volume of shale and water saturation has been evaluated for reservoirs of Upper Assam basin, located in northeastern India from well log and seismic data. Absolute acoustic impedance(AAI) and relative acoustic impedance(RAI) are generated from model based inversion of 2-D post-stack seismic data. The top of geological formation, sand reservoirs, shale layers and discontinuities at faults are detected in RAI section under the study area. Tipam Sandstone(TS) and Barail Arenaceous Sandstone(BAS) are the main reservoirs,delineated from the logs of available wells and RAI section. Porosity section is obtained using porosity wavelet and porosity reflectivity from post-stack seismic data. Two multilayered feed forward neural network(MLFN) models are created with inputs: AAI, porosity, density and shear impedance and outputs: volume of shale and water saturation with single hidden layer. The estimated average porosity in TS and BAS reservoir varies from 30% to 36% and 18% to 30% respectively. The volume of shale and water saturation ranges from 10% to 30% and 20% to 60% in TS reservoir and 28% to 30% and 23% to 55% in BAS reservoir respectively.

Enhancing the efficiency of nitrogen removing bacterial population to a wide range of C:N ratio(1.5:1 to 14:1)for simultaneous C&N removal

High C:N ratio in the wastewater limits biological nitrogen removal(BNR),especially in anammox based *** present study attempts to improve the COD tolerance of the BNR process by associating methanogens with nitrogen removing bacterial(NRB)*** new microbial system coined as‘Methammox’,was investigated for simultaneous removal of COD(C)and ammonia(N)at C:N ratio 1.5:1 to 14:*** ammonia removal rate(11.5 mg N/g VSS/d)and the COD removal rates(70.6 mg O/g VSS/d)of Methammox was close to that of the NRB(11.1 mg N/g VSS/d)and the methanogenic populations(77.9 mg O/g VSS/d),*** activities established that these two populations existed simultaneously and independently in‘Methammox’.Further studies in biofilm reactor fetched a balanced COD and ammonia removal(55%–60%)at a low C:N ratio(£2:1)and high C:N ratio(≥9:1).The population abundance of methanogens was reasonably constant,but the nitrogen removal shifted from mixotrophy to heterotrophy as the C:N ratio shifted from low(C:N£2:1)to high(C:N≥9:1).The reduced autotrophic NRB(ammonia-and nitrite-oxidizing bacteria and Anammox)population at a high C:N ratio was compensated by the fermentative group that could carry out denitrification *** functional plasticity of the Methammox system to adjust to a broad C:N ratio opens new frontiers in biological nitrogen removal of high COD containing wastewaters.

Synthesis of N-fused dithia and dibenzihomoporphyrins

N-Fused dithia and dibenzi homoporphyrins have been synthesized using a[2+2]approach by condensing one equivalent of appropriate dithienyl/di p-phenylene ethene diol with one equivalent of N-confused dipyrromethane in CH_(2)Cl_(2) under mild acid catalysed *** X-ray structure obtainedfor the N-fused dibenzi homoporphyrin revealed that the fused tripentacyclic ring was planar and wastilted by an angle of 11.35°whereas the p-phenylene moieties were highly deviated by angles of 48.70°and 50.93°from the mean plane defined by five meso carbon *** NMR and absorption featuressuggested the non-aromatic nature of both N-fused dithia and dibenzi *** DFT studiesrevealed that the N-fused dithia homoporphyrin was highly distorted with one thiophene ring facingoutside the macrocyclic *** spectral features of both N-fused dithia and dibenzi homoporphyrinswere supported by TD-DFT studies.

Lighting preferences in office spaces concerning the indoor thermal environment

The accurate prediction of the visual comfort zone in an indoor environment is difficult as it depends on many *** is especially the case for large compact urban areas in which the density and shadow from neighboring buildings can limit the accessible daylighting in indoor *** paper investigates the satisfaction range for illuminance regarding indoor air temperature in office buildings and the significant parameters affecting this range in six office buildings in Tehran,*** comfort has been evaluated by a subjective survey(509 total responses)and field *** questionnaires were filled out in 146 and 109 rooms in summer and winter,*** results show that the illuminance should not be less than 550 lx,while illuminance between 600 and 650 lx provides the highest satisfaction *** satisfaction with lighting level is affected by individual parameters such as age,type of activity,and environmental parameters such as window orientation,external obscurations,and season.A relationship was observed between lighting level satisfaction and thermal condition acceptance,and the overall comfort depends more on thermal conditions than the lighting level.

Applying terahertz time-domain spectroscopy to probe the evolution of kerogen in close pyrolysis systems

Terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) has been used to probe the evolutionary paths of kerogen in selected black mudstone. The evolutionary regime of kerogens (for instance, the immaturity, early maturity, middle maturity, late maturity, and catagenesis stages) can be indicated by the absorption coefficient in the THz region. The present study of identification based on THz-TDS was in good agreement with programmed pyrolysis experiments and suggests that THz technology can act as a nondestructive, contact-free tool for probing the ability to generate hydrocarbons from kerogens.

Less than 6 GHz resolution THz spectroscopy of water vapor

The application of terahertz（THz） technique in many fields like petroleum industry requires the high resolution and multifunction to realize the precise detection of different materials. In this study water vapor in atmosphere was scanned with shortand long-path THz spectrometers with different scan ranges. The full width at half maximum of the THz characteristic lines in long-path system reached less than 7 GHz and that in short achieved -5.5 GHz, indicating that the THz spectroscopy of water vapor can be used to calibrate THz devices. THz systems with right scan ranges could be a promising selection for the identification of solid, liquid and gaseous materials with very similar structures due to the high resolution. The research demonstrates that the multifunctional THz test can be realized through the balance of resolution and sampling space in many fields, such as oil-gas industry.
