Advancing Type II Diabetes Predictions with a Hybrid LSTM-XGBoost Approach

In this paper, we explore the ability of a hybrid model integrating Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) networks and eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) to enhance the prediction accuracy of Type II Diabetes Mellitus, which is caused by a combination of genetic, behavioral, and environmental factors. Utilizing comprehensive datasets from the Women in Data Science (WiDS) Datathon for the years 2020 and 2021, which provide a wide range of patient information required for reliable prediction. The research employs a novel approach by combining LSTM’s ability to analyze sequential data with XGBoost’s strength in handling structured datasets. To prepare this data for analysis, the methodology includes preparing it and implementing the hybrid model. The LSTM model, which excels at processing sequential data, detects temporal patterns and trends in patient history, while XGBoost, known for its classification effectiveness, converts these patterns into predictive insights. Our results demonstrate that the LSTM-XGBoost model can operate effectively with a prediction accuracy achieving 0.99. This study not only shows the usefulness of the hybrid LSTM-XGBoost model in predicting diabetes but it also provides the path for future research. This progress in machine learning applications represents a significant step forward in healthcare, with the potential to alter the treatment of chronic diseases such as diabetes and lead to better patient outcomes.

A composite particle swarm algorithm for global optimization of multimodal functions

During the last decade,many variants of the original particle swarm optimization(PSO)algorithm have been proposed for global numerical optimization,but they usually face many challenges such as low solution quality and slow convergence speed on multimodal function optimization.A composite particle swarm optimization(CPSO)for solving these difficulties is presented,in which a novel learning strategy plus an assisted search mechanism framework is *** of simple learning strategy of the original PSO,the proposed CPSO combines one particle's historical best information and the global best information into one learning exemplar to guide the particle *** proposed learning strategy can reserve the original search information and lead to faster convergence *** proposed assisted search mechanism is designed to look for the global *** direction of particles can be greatly changed by this mechanism so that the algorithm has a large chance to escape from local *** order to make the assisted search mechanism more efficient and the algorithm more reliable,the executive probability of the assisted search mechanism is adjusted by the feedback of the improvement degree of optimal value after each *** to the result of numerical experiments on multimodal benchmark functions such as Schwefel,Rastrigin,Ackley and Griewank both with and without coordinate rotation,the proposed CPSO offers faster convergence speed,higher quality solution and stronger robustness than other variants of PSO.

Genetics of seed flavonoid content and antioxidant activity in cowpea(Vigna unguiculata L. Walp.)

Information about the type of gene action governing the inheritance of cowpea seed flavonoid content and antioxidant activity is prerequisite for starting an effective breeding program for developing improved varieties. For this purpose, half-diallel crosses among seven diverse parents were made. The homozygous parents and 21 F1 hybrids were evaluated at Maroua in the Sudano-Sahelian zone of Cameroon using a randomized complete block design with three replicates. Flour samples produced from decorticated seeds were used for biochemical analysis. Analysis of variance showed significant differences(P < 0.001) among genotypes for the studied traits with ranges of 363.6–453.9 mg rutin equivalent per 100 g dry weight(DW) for total flavonoids, 13.38–30.73 mg ascorbic acid equivalent per 1 g DW for ferric iron reducing activity, 70.98–266.93 mg trolox equivalent per 100 g DW for 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl(DPPH) free radical scavenging activity, and 90.93–370.62 mg trolox equivalent per 100 g DW for 2,2′-azinobis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid)(ABTS) free radical scavenging activity. Both additive and non-additive gene effects were significant in the genetic control of these traits, but dominance variance was greater than additive variance. The traits were mainly controlled by overdominance model suggesting a selection in the delayed ***- and narrow-sense heritability estimates varied from 0.90 to 0.99 and from 0.12 to 0.45,respectively. The variances due to both general and specific combining ability were highly significant for all studied traits. Recessive alleles had positive effects on DPPH and ABTS scavenging activities, whereas dominant alleles had positive effects on flavonoid content and ferric iron reducing activity. These results could help cowpea breeders to improve the antioxidant potential of cowpea seeds by appropriate selection.

Simplifying the ShangRing technique for circumcision in boys and men: use of the no-flip technique with randomization to removal at 7 days versus spontaneous detachment

To assess safety of the no-flip ShangRing male circumcision technique and to determine clinical course and safety of spontaneous detachme nt (i.e., allowing the device to fall off), we con ducted a case series of no-flip ShangRing circumcision combined with a randomized controlled trial of removal 7 days postcircumcision versus spontaneous detachment at two health facilities in Kenya. The primary outcome was the safety of the no-flip technique based on moderate and severe adverse events (AEs) during the procedure and through 42-day follow-up. A main sec on dary outcome was clinical course and safety of spontan eous detachment. Two hundred and thirty males 10 years and older underwent no?flip circumcision;114 randomized to 7-day removal and 116 to spontaneous detachment. All circumcisions were successfully completed. Overall 5.3%(6/114) of participants in the 7-day group and 1.7%(2/116) in the spontan eous group had an AE;with no d iff ere nces when compared to the 3% AE rate in historical data from African studies using the original flip technique (P = 0.07 and P = 0.79, respectively). Overall 72.4%(84/116) of participants in the spontaneous group wore the ShangRing until it detached. Among the remaining (27.6%;32/116), the ring was removed, primarily at the participants1 request, due to pain or discomfort. There was no d iff ere nee in AE rates (P = 0.169), visit day declared healed (P= 0.324), or satisfaction (P= 0.371) between randomization groups. The median time to detachment was 14.0 (IQR: 7-21, range: 5-35) days. The no?flip technique and spontaneous detachment are safe, effective, and acceptable to boys and men 10 years and older. Phimosis and penile adhesions do not limit successful ShangRing circumcision with the no-flip technique.
