High sensitivity radio searches of unassociated γ-ray sources have proven to be an effective way of finding new pulsars. Using the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope(FAST) during its commissioning phase, we have carried out a number of targeted deep searches of Fermi Large Area Telescope(LAT) γ-ray sources. On February 27, 2018 we discovered an isolated millisecond pulsar(MSP), PSR j0318+0253, coincident with the unassociated γ-ray source 3 FGL j0318.1+0252. PSR j0318+0253 has a spin period of 5.19 ms, a dispersion measure(DM) of 26 pc cm-3 corresponding to a DM distance of about 1.3 kpc, and a period-averaged flux density of(~11±2) μjy at L-band(1.05-1.45 GHz). Among all high energy MSPs, PSR j0318+0253 is the faintest ever detected in radio bands, by a factor of at least ~4 in terms of L-band fluxes. With the aid of the radio ephemeris, an analysis of 9.6 years of Fermi-LAT data revealed that PSR j0318+0253 also displays strong γ-ray pulsations. Follow-up observations carried out by both Arecibo and FAST suggest a likely spectral turn-over around 350 MHz. This is the first result from the collaboration between FAST and the Fermi-LAT teams as well as the first confirmed new MSP discovery by FAST, raising hopes for the detection of many more MSPs. Such discoveries will make a significant contribution to our understanding of the neutron star zoo while potentially contributing to the future detection of gravitational waves, via pulsar timing array(PTA) experiments.

Correlation of PSA Density to Prostate Cancer Based on Prostate Volume by 3.0 T MRI

Purpose: Prostate specific antigen levels can be normalized by the prostate volume to give a prostate specific antigen density (PSAd). Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can more accurately determine prostate zonal anatomy and prostate volumes compared to transrectal ultrasound, and hence may lead to more accurate PSAd measurements. Methods: Imaging and pathology of men undergoing prostate MRI from April 2007 to May 2009 were reviewed in this retrospective study. 73 patients were included for analysis, of which 45 had prostate cancer and 28 did not have cancer. Total, transitional zone, and peripheral zone values were determined by ultrasound prolate ellipse, MRI prolate ellipse, and MRI segmentation methods. Results: The study population showed an average PSA of 6.3 ng/mL, with the control mean PSA (8.8 ng/mL) being greater than the cancer group (5.3 ng/mL). Transrectal ultrasound underestimated the prostate volume (mean 27.7 mL versus MRI volume of 38.3 mL, p ≤ 0.001). No difference was seen between cancer and control populations using PSAd. PSAd correctly categorized low (Gleason < 7) and high-grade cancers (Gleason ≥ 7) in patients with malignancy. Conclusion: Transrectal ultrasound underestimates prostate volumes and hence is inaccurate in calculating PSAd. MRI more accurately depicts PSAd, however PSAd is unable to differentiate between patients with cancer and benign disease such as BPH or prostatitis.

Benzodiazepines and other benzodiazepine receptor agonists, such as the “Z” drugs, are widely prescribed medications mainly used for treating anxiety and seizures, and for inducing sedation. Unfortunately, despite their popularity, benzodiazepine prescribing often exceeds recommendations and the consequences can be severe. On September 23, 2020, the United States FDA announced a new requirement for a Boxed Warning for benzodiazepines prescribing. Along with this announcement, the FDA stated that relevant information regarding the initiation, continuation, and discontinuation of benzodiazepines is lacking. Here, we describe initial pilot studies intended to investigate the questions 1) can animal models be developed that demonstrate benzodiazepine physical dependence and/or withdrawal symptoms, and 2) determine whether translocator protein (TSPO) plays a role in benzodiazepine dependence and/or withdrawal processes. The former was demonstrated, methodological limitations prevented the latter.

Background: Outbreak of yellow fever infection (YFI), a mosquito-borne disease, occurs sporadically worldwide especially in tropical nations. Acute kidney injury (AKI) commonly results from YFI and could be associated with a poor prognosis for victims even under intensive care unit (ICU). Pathophysiologic mechanisms for AKI include hypovolemic shut down, cytotoxicity, acute tubular necrosis (ATN), hemolysis, or coagulopathy. Early diagnosis, prompt and effective treatment modalities including dialysis improve treatment outcome. Aim: We report the case management of a 19-year-old woman who had yellow fever infection complicated by acute kidney injury in the setting of multi-organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS). Case Presentation: A 19-year-old woman who presented with fever, headache and vomiting for 2 weeks. In the course of the illness, urine volume became reduced and coke colored, followed by body swelling, yellowness of the eyes bleeding from the orifices. Examination revealed an acutely ill looking woman, icteric, and with pedal edema. Her pulse was 100/min and blood pressure was 120/80 mmHg. Liver was enlarged, soft and tender. She had proteinuria 3+ and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) confirmed yellow fever infection. She had markedly deranged serum biochemical parameters for which she had a three-hour session of hemodialysis with Heparin anticoagulation. The urea reduction ratio (URR) was 46.9%. Barrier nursing was commenced. She had 7 units of whole blood and a pint of fresh frozen plasma (FFP) with antibiotics, Rabeprazole, Tranexamic acid, Vitamin K and Frusemide. She had the second dialysis session of HD and entered into the recovering phase of AKI and was subsequently discharged after 18th days on admission. Background Large-river decision-makers are charged with maintaining diverse ecosystem services through unprec-edented social-ecological transformations as climate change and other global stressors *** interconnected,dendritic habitats of rivers,which often demarcate jurisdictional boundaries,generate complex management ***,we explore how the Resist–Accept–Direct(RAD)framework may enhance large-river management by promoting coordinated and deliberate responses to social-ecological trajectories of *** RAD frame-work identifies the full decision space of potential management approaches,wherein managers may resist change to maintain historical conditions,accept change toward different conditions,or direct change to a specified future with novel *** the Upper Mississippi River System,managers are facing social-ecological transformations from more frequent and extreme high-water *** illustrate how RAD-informed basin-,reach-,and site-scale decisions could:(1)provide cross-spatial scale framing;(2)open the entire decision space of potential management approaches;and(3)enhance coordinated inter-jurisdictional management in response to the trajectory of the Upper Mississippi River *** The RAD framework helps identify plausible long-term trajectories in different reaches(or subbasins)of the river and how the associated social-ecological transformations could be managed by altering site-scale *** reach-scale objectives may reprioritize how,where,and when site conditions could be altered to contribute to the basin goal,given the basin’s plausible trajectories of change(e.g.,by coordinating action across sites to alter habitat connectivity,diversity,and redundancy in the river mosaic).Conclusions When faced with long-term systemic transformations(e.g.,>50 years),the RAD framework helps explicitly consider whether or when the basin vision or goals may no longer be achievable,and direct options may open y

The identification of jets originating from quarks and gluons,often referred to as quark/gluon tagging,plays an important role in various analyses performed at the Large Hadron Collider,as Standard Model measurements and searches for new particles decaying to quarks often rely on suppressing a large gluon-induced *** paper describes the measurement of the efficiencies of quark/gluon taggers developed within the ATLAS Collaboration,using √s=13 TeV proton–proton collision data with an integrated luminosity of 140 fb^(-1) collected by the ATLAS *** taggers with high performances in rejecting jets from gluon over jets from quarks are studied:one tagger is based on requirements on the number of inner-detector tracks associated with the jet,and the other combines several jet substructure observables using a boosted decision tree.A method is established to determine the quark/gluon fraction in data,by using quark/gluon-enriched subsamples defined by the jet *** in tagging efficiency between data and simulation are provided for jets with transverse momentum between 500 GeV and 2 TeV and for multiple tagger working points.
